OPERATION

The Ross Model MOV is based on bi-directional operating principles andcontains one fixed (downstream) valve plate, and one linearly moving(upstream) valve plate. Both plates have matching orifices at a large numberof engineered locations. These orifices divide the flow into jets that dissipateenergy in a short linear distance. Operation is typically smooth enough toallow placement of monitoring equipment within close proximity of the valve.

INSTALLATION / START-UP

Shipment:Prior to shipment, each valve is thoroughly tested and pre-adjusted at the factory to the expected fieldconditions. Any visible damage to the crate or packaging should be immediately brought to the attention of

the shipping company and documented with photographs.

Storage:If it is necessary to store the valve before installation, it should be protected from the elements. Insidestorage is recommended. If this is not possible, the valve should be protected from dirt, heat, freezing, and

direct sunlight.

Installation:1. Carefully remove all shipping materials and check the valve for any other foreign objects.

2. If possible, flush the line before inserting the valve.

3. The valve is tagged with a model and serial number. It is recommended that the serial number be notedin your records as this will be requested by the factory when any technical support or parts replacement

is required. Valve serial number: L__________. 

4. The valve is tagged with an arrow indicating the direction of flowthrough the valve. Place the valve in line with the arrow pointingaway from the normal supply source. Note: The valve may be

installed in any position (horizontal or vertical), but be aware ofthe actuator requirements.

5. Do not use the valve body for support, as this will prohibit access to the End Cap #6.

6. Be sure to allow ample clearance underneath the valve. The minimum recommended clearance is:

For 12” valves and smaller = 1x the line size

For valves over 12” = 0.5 x the line size

7. Actuator types and mounting hardware vary. If the external actuator and/or controls are not attached tothe valve when shipped, assembly as identified on the appropriate tags. Refer to additional actuatordocumentation, as needed.

8. Complete any necessary wiring on the electrical actuator or solenoid valves (if applicable).

Start-Up:1. Open the main line gate valve (if installed) on the discharge/downstream side of the valve.

2. Slowly open the main line gate valve (if installed) on the inlet/upstream side of the valve. Note: The

design of the Model MOV valve does not permit a drip-tight closure. Some nominal leakage through thevalve is normal.

3. No lubrication or adjustment to the valve is required or recommended.4. The valve has been thoroughly tested at the factory and set to the expected field conditions.

5. To open the valve, utilize the actuator provided. For example, initiate the start sequence on the electricalactuator or use the hand-wheel on the manual gear actuator.

OPERATION

The Ross Model MOV Energy Dissipating Valve utilizes a simple two-plate design. The two plates have amatching hole pattern, with different hole profiles that optimize the energy dissipating performance of thevalve.

The downstream plate is fixed (Fixed Plate #2), while the upstream plate (Linear Plate #3) can move along

the axis in line with the Upper Stem #4 and Lower Stem #5. The Linear Plate #3 is positioned by an actuatorin order to achieve the desired flow or pressure through the valve. When the Linear Plate #3 is in the “down”position (at the furthest point in its travel away from the actuator), the hole patterns between the two platesline up and al low flow to pass through the open valve. As the Linear Plate #3 rises up, less and less of the

hole pattern overlaps as it gradually closes off the flow through the valve.

The distance between the plates is controlled by the Taper Ring #10. Tightening the taper ring will reduce

the gap between the plates and reduce the leakage rate, but will increase the friction and, consequently, mayincrease the force required to operate the valve.

Note: The design of the Model MOV valve does not permit a drip-tight closure. Some nominal leakage isnormal.

A variety of actuator types areavailable. They can be used

individually or in combination.The three most common are:

PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE

Intervals of inspection vary from valve to valve. Type of valve, quality of the water being handled, rates offlow, operating pressures, frequency of use, and past maintenance practices all have a bearing on the lengthof service between overhauls.

We suggest periodic inspections in order to check for proper valve operating pressures, as well as any visual

leaks. Should the operator encounter any external leakage, or find any abnormalities in the operatingpressures resulting from the operation of the valve, the valve should be scheduled for service.

As a suggested starting point, the following should be performed every six (6) months:

• Inspect the entire valve for any visual external leakage. Note: With regular wear, a small amount ofleakage from the packing retainer (part #7) is normal, and can usually be corrected by tightening thecap slightly.

• Perform an open/close valve cycle.

• Observe operating pressures/flows compared to historical data.

• Inspect actuator and verify it is in good working condition.

Spare Parts:No spare parts are required or recommended. Under normal operating conditions, no spare parts would be

necessary within five (5) years of service. The standard repair kits for Ross Model MOV valves are in stockat the factory, and available for immediate shipment upon receipt of the order with the valve serial number.The serial number is stamped into a metal tag pinned to the main valve shell.

Special Tools:

No special tools are required for operation, adjustment or maintenance of the valve.

REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS

We suggest periodic inspections in order to check for proper valve operating pressures, as well as any visualleaks. Should the operator encounter any external leakage, or find any abnormalities in the operatingpressures resulting from the operation of the valve, the valve should be scheduled for service. Note: When

entering a valve pit to inspect a valve, all regulations regarding Confined Space Entry should be observed.

Replacement of all standard seals may be made without removing the valve from the line.

Steps for internal repairs:

1. Shut the inlet (upstream) main line isolation valve, drain the line, then shut the outlet (downstream) mainline isolation valve.

2. Move the MOV valve to the full open position (away from the actuator).

3. Loosen the set screws on Coupling #30 and remove Connection Pin #33.

4. Unscrew the lock nut and Coupling #30 from the Upper Stem #4.

5. At this point, the entire actuator assembly can be disconnected from the valve body and removed,

however, note that the Actuator Stem #31 will need to be reinstalled in the same position to allow for

replacement of the Connection Pin #33. Alternatively, the actuator stem #31 can be driven up manually,provided this allows enough clearance to access and remove the required valve components.

6. Remove the cap on the Packing Retainer #7, then remove the six (6) Packing Retainer Bolts #27.

7. Lift the Packing Retainer #7 straight up and out of the Valve Body #1, and replace the Packing RetainerO-Ring #11. We recommend applying o-ring lube to all new o-rings.

8. Carefully remove the Snap Ring #21, then remove the Sleeve Insert #19 by pulling it straight up and outof the Valve Body #1. Note: The Sleeve Insert #19 is held in place by o-rings, so tapped holes areprovided to make its removal easier.

9. Replace the external Sleeve Insert O-Ring #17 and the two (2) internal Sleeve Insert O-Rings #24. Werecommend applying o-ring lube to all new o-rings.

10. Inspect parts for signs of any abnormal wear, and remove and debris or residue with a clean rag.

11. Replace parts (from steps 6 through 9) in reverse order, taking extra caution when installing the SleeveInsert #19. This should be rotated and pressed simultaneously to allow the o-rings to roll into place andnot get pinched or torn. Note: Prior to installing the cap on the Packing Retainer #7, replace the glands

and packing wicks (if provided), taking care to alternate the seams.

12. Reattach the actuator assembly (if removed) and the Coupling #30 with lock nut, taking care to align theholes for the Connection Pin #33. Replace Connection Pin #33 and secure set screw. Refer to the

actuator documentation for any required calibration procedures.

13. Remove the four (4) End Cap Bolts #26 and the End Cap #6. Replace End Cap O-Ring #23. Werecommend applying o-ring lube to all new o-rings.

14. Remove Lower Stem Bolts #28 and Lower Stem #5 by pulling straight down and out of the Valve Body#1. Replace the Lower Stem O-Ring #25. We recommend applying o-ring lube to all new o-rings.

15. Replace parts (from steps 13 and 14) in reverse order, taking extra caution when installing the Lower

Stem #5. This should easily fit back into the Lower Bearing #12 and Lower Slide Bearing #13.

16. Note the position of the valve (open or closed) before slowly opening the main line isolation valves.

All replaceable packings and gaskets are stock items and may be ordered as a repair kit for valve SerialNumber L________ (located on the metal tag pinned directly to the valve). They are available for deliveryvia regular ground service or next day air if required, directly from:
