What is a Reference Source?

Any publication from which authoritative information may be obtained, including but not limited to reference books, catalog records, printed indexes and abstracting services, and bibliographic databases.

What is a Reference Source? (Cont’d)

• A resource that is used most frequently by reference librarians. The resource can be found in print, microforms, CD-ROM, machine-readable, that are accessible through the library.

• Several types of reference books that are characterized by the presentation of information, arrangement, indexing, and an applicable amount of bibliographic content.

General Evaluation CriteriaChase’s Calendar of Events 2014

• Format - The design of the Chase’s Calendar of Events 2014, allows the user to locate information through the Table of Contents, Spotlight, Calendar of Information and Index. Information that is organized by listing the first month to the last month of the year with detailed facts that are organized with important dates, ethnic and international observances, sports events, historic anniversaries, important birth anniversaries, religious holidays and observations, astronomical phenomena and much more.

• Scope - According to Chase's Calendar of Events it is the most comprehensive and authoritative reference available on special events, holidays, federal and state observances, historic anniversaries, birthdays and more. Each spring, thousands of new entries are submitted to join the more than 12,000 items that make up each year's book. Each event listing (where applicable) contains contact and mailing information.

• Relation to similar works - I compared this resource to the World Almanac 2014 and discovered that there were similar facts listed in both reference items. Current dates in the Chase’s has been updated online to represent correct information to the user.

• Purpose - The Chase’s Calendar of Events is a resource that contains 4,000 birthdays, 1,400 historical anniversaries, 650 national and international holidays, 160 religious holidays and thousands of additional days of note from all over the globe.

• Authority - since 2000 the resource has been handled by an in-house staff of editors and has partnered with the publisher McGraw-Hill Education, which is considered to be reputable publisher who provides customized educational content, software and services for pre-K through postgraduate education.

• Audience - The intended general audience for this resource would be librarians, broadcasters, journalist, event planners, public relations professionals, and editors. This reference resource can also be used by the lay person who may not be aware of calendar events. This item would be most useful to an adult.

• Edition - This is not the most current edition in print which includes a CD-ROM that is found in the back of this resource. Each new edition appears in late September preceding the year in question.

How to effectively use Chase’s Calendar of Events 2014

When viewing the Chase’s Calendar of Events the Table of Contents lists many world events, observances, holidays and etc, which enables you to locate information at an accelerated rate. The first few pages of the “Introduction” page, you will find major events listed under “Spotlight” which will provide you with past events that can be located under each genre that are alphabetized by the date. This section begins from page 9 and continues to page 64.

Next, Spotlight on World Anniversaries can be located by viewing the events located under each genre alphabetically by the date.

Next, Spotlight on World American Anniversaries can also be located by viewing the events under each genre alphabetically by the date.

Locating Events

When locating events, birthday’s, anniversaries and much more, you can begin your search starting with January 1, 2014 and then continuing until December 31, 2014. You can find this information from pages 65 to 634.

Examples of Questions and Answers

• Q: When was “The Star-Spangled Banner” written?

• A: You will be able to find the answer to “The Star-Spangled Banner” by looking at “Spotlights” on American Anniversaries located on page (42).

• Q: Where can I find the dates of observances: Columbus Day, Labor Day, Veteran’s Day and Independence Day?

• A: You will be able to locate the dates to many observances, if you look at the “Civil Calendar”, it can be found underneath the Calendar of information for the year 2014 on page (632).

• Q: I would like to decorate the bulletin boards, but I am unsure of the dates to most holidays. Can you please help me find the date to the Easter Holiday?

• A: Some dates can be located if you look in the section of “Religious Calendars”, and this information can be found by perusing the Calendar of Information for the year 2014 on page (632).

• Q: I know Memorial’s Day is in May, but I am unsure of the exact day. Where can I find the date to this Holiday?

• A: When having a general idea of the month, locate the month of may, then look at all the dates in chronological order and you will locate Memorial Day.

Calendar Information for Years 2014 to 2016

• When looking to find information to most questions concerning Observances and Holiday’s and you can look on pages 632 to 634.

• There is an abundance of dates listed concerning Eastern Orthodox observances, Jewish Holidays and Islamic Holiday’s.

• you will also be able to locate the “Civil Calendar” dates of other Countries: Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom.

Some Facts About the US Presidents

• There is a section of information regarding 43 former Presidents. The Calendar of Events speaks of our current President Barack Obama.

• If you look on pages (654) there is a bounty of information regarding the Title, Observance dates of the Presidential Proclamations issued January 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013.

• when looking for major awards presented in stage, film, and television, all award information can be found on pages 656 to 663.

Question and Answers toAstronomy & Hurricanes

• When looking for listings of Astronomical Phenomena for the Years 2014 to 2016, you can find this information on page (644).

• You can locate the phases of the moon by the month and date: New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon and Last Quarter on page (644).

• When attempting to locate the names of all the hurricanes that were in the Atlantic, Central Pacific, Eastern Pacific and Western Pacific, you can find this information pages (645).

• You can locate special observances and birth dates within the index.

• There are several of events, observances and dates listed in alphabetical order: Agriculture, Animals, Arts, Automobiles and etc. The index begins on page 664 and it stops at Your-Zworykin on page 752.
