Introduction and Citations for the CAUTI Calculator

IntroductionThe CAUTI Calculator was developed to provide Infection Preventionists the ability to both learn the CAUTI

surveillance definitions, and offer a double check for complex cases. To use the CAUTI Calculator you must first identify a positive urine culture and then enter data required into the CAUTI Calculator to determine if this

patient’s positive urine culture meets the National Health Safety Network (NHSN) definition of a CAUTI. Each time you complete the CAUTI Calculator process, you will have the ruling for that single positive urine culture.

You must utilize the CAUTI Calculator for one culture at a time. The CAUTI Calculator is not a diagnostic test and is not to be used for diagnosis. Rather, the CAUTI Calculator will take the guess work out of CAUTI surveillance

for NHSN reporting and allow IPs to focus more on improving patient safety.

Citations1. The rules utilized for the Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI) calculator are the NHSN

2014 definitions that can be found on the CDC website: http://www.cdc.gov/nhsn/pdfs/pscmanual/7psccauticurrent.pdf.

2. Additional information about the validation of the CAUTI Calculator and that automation of CAUTI surveillance can be found in the peer-reviewed publication published in AJIC: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24581026.
