Today, the demand for energy efficient buildingsis greater than ever before, driven by mandatorylegislation and escalating energy costs –forecast to double by 2030.

Rising to these challenges, Kingspan hasdeveloped EnvelopeFirst™.

EnvelopeFirst™ is a design strategy for optimising a building’s

energy efficiency and the first step on the route to Carbon Neutral

Buildings, providing property investors, owners, landlords and

tenants with affordable, energy efficient buildings.

The most effective, and affordable, energy saving measure available

to a building is the integration of a high performance building

envelope system that provides guaranteed insulation continuity and

thermal and airtightness performance.

Kingspan offers a wide range of building envelope systems that

can provide significant performance benefits towards the overall

energy efficiency of a building and the optimum specification,

size and amount of HVAC equipment – the largest end use of

energy and source of GHG emissions in commercial buildings.

With EnvelopeFirst™, heating and cooling energy demand can be

reduced by up to 40% with smaller, less-costly more energy

efficient HVAC systems.

The next step, once the building envelope is as efficient as

possible, is the implementation of optimised HVAC and building

services. Finally, the integration of renewable technologies

enables a building to achieve carbon neutral targets,

and even become a net-energy producer.

A building’s envelope, services and renewablesmust be considered on a ‘whole building design’basis in order to optimise energy performanceto achieve efficiency and sustainability targets.

Whole Building DesignThe design, construction and/or retrofitting of high-performance

low- and carbon neutral buildings demands an integrated, ‘whole

building design’ (WBD) approach. In comparison to an elemental

design and construction processes, WBD examines the integration

of all building components, systems and equipment to determine

how they work together to save energy and reduce the buildings

overall impact on the environment.

WBD considers all impacts and influences associated with a

building: site, orientation, energy, materials, acoustics, indoor air

quality, and natural resources.

Kingspan Safepro2Fall Protection System

Kingspan Safepro2 is a new innovative fallprotection system, designed to protect boththe worker and the roof to which it is fixed.Kingspan Safepro2 is the only horizontal life lineapproved by Kingspan for installation onKingspan insulated panels.

Safepro2 comprises a high-strength stainless steel cable,

supported on energy-absorbing roof anchor posts. Safepro2 is

certified to AS NZS 1891.2 & 1891.4, EN 795 and OHSA 1926.

Safepro2 roof anchors incorporate Force Minimisation Technology,

which limits the load transferred to the roof, in a fall arrest event,

to less than 6kN. This is a significant improvement over older types

of force control posts which applied 10kN or more to the roof.

Safepro2 has fixing and sealing details specifically for Kingspan

K-Dek, Trapezoidal, Foilback and Lo-Pitch insulated panels.

Safepro2 is the only such system tested and proven with current

Kingspan insulated panel specifications.

Safepro2 can be installed during or after construction to most

roof systems, without access to the underside of the roof.

Safepro2 is highly suitable for providing safe access to

roof-mounted PV and other solar systems.

The Kingspan Safepro2 system is available globally including

Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Ireland, Europe,

North America and Canada, the Middle East and Hong Kong.

Seals and FillersEnd Lap

200mm membrane strip welded at lap. Nominal weld 40mm to

each panel.

Side Lap

Double sided acrylic tape applied to side lap prior to welding

(Kingspan reference KDSLTAPE). Overlap of membrane welded to

membrane of adjacent panel at side laps, nominally 40mm.

Fillers

Polyethylene profiled fillers should be used to seal perimeter of

building (Kingspan reference 3RWFILL). Seal the top, bottom and

sides of each profile filler with a single line of non-setting gun-grade

sealant.

Locate where shown on drawings and wherever necessary to close

off corrugation cavities from the inside and outside of the building.

Ensure a tight fit and leave no gaps.

Junctions

Junctions between the roof panel system and walls / penetrations

to be filled with a fire rated gun applied canister urethane insulation.

FastenersPrimary

Self-coring carbon steel fasteners to be used incorporating a

19mm washer. Recommended fixing manufacturer SFS Intec

(sourced from Powers Fasteners).

SFS fastener codes:.

 1.2 – 3.0mm steel purlin SD3-D10-T19/C9-5.5x30

 3.0 – 12.0mm steel purlin SD14-D10-T19/C9-5.5x40

 Timber SW2-D10-T19/C9-5.5x55

A minimum of three fasteners is required at panel ends and a

minimum of one at intermediate support locations. The actual

number of fasteners required is dependent on the project

wind loads, see Kingspan K-Dek load/span table for further

information. Intermediate fasteners covered with a 90mm welded

membrane patch.

similar at 330mm centres. Fastener length to be minimum 120mm

for pan fixing and 155mm for crown fixing.

Construction DetailsFlashings

External flashings to be a combination of galvanised steel with

membrane flashing overlay and membrane lined steel flashings,

as per Kingspan standard construction details. Membrane lined

steel flashings to be sealed at laps with a minimum 125mm welded

membrane strip.

Internal flashings should be made to the same specification as the

liner sheet. Flashings to be air sealed at laps and along the full

length by an unbroken bead of 6x4mm butyl rubber sealant tape

(Kingspan reference SEXT).

Rooflights

Rooflights can be integrated into the membrane finish (refer to

Kinspan details).

Drainage and Accessories

A number of drainage and accessory options are available

specifically designed to suit the Kingspan K-Dek roof system.

These include pipe/vent flashings, drainage outlets incorporating

leaf guards, overflow outlets, walkway systems and height

safety solutions.

Panel Lengths

Standard lengths are from 2m to 13.7m, longer lengths can be

supplied on request. Maximum length for panels transported by rail

is 12m. For orders supplied outside of Australia maximum lengths

are 11.8m.

Exact lengths to be determined by the cladding contractor from the

steelwork drawings.

Purlin Centres

Purlin spacing determined from Kingspan load tables to project

specific wind requirements, as specified by the structural engineer.

Construction RequirementsSteelwork Tolerance

The supporting frame must be made and assembled to an

accuracy of +/- 5mm or L/600 (whichever is greater) between

bearing planes of adjacent supports, where L is the purlin spacing.

Installation

Panels to be laid with side lap joints away from prevailing wind

unless otherwise shown on drawings.

All fasteners, seals and fillers to be of correct specification and

installed as indicated on the project construction drawings.

Site cut panels must provide accurate, true lines with no distortion.

Panels to be cut with a suitable metal cutting circular type saw and

all exposed site steel to be treated with a suitable edge protection

lacquer. Cut openings for outlets, vents, flues etc. to be the

minimum size necessary. Penetrations larger than 300mm x 300m

should have additional structural support.

Remove all swarf and any foreign matter immediately from the

external surface of panels.

Safety

The contractor is to determine and use a safe method of working

throughout the installation and construction period, which complies

with OHS/WHS requirements. A safe work method template

(although NOT project specific) is available from Kingspan.
