De!nitions to Know

Insulator Apprentice.

APPRENTICEAn apprentice is any individual employed by the Employer/Sponsor meeting the quali!cations described in the Standards of Apprenticeship who has signed an Apprenticeship Agreement with the Employer/Sponsor providing for training and related instruction under these Standards, and who is registered with the Registration Agency.

JOURNEY WORKER: A recognized level of competency as recognized within the industry. Use of the term may also refer to a mentor, technician, specialist or other skilled worker - or - An individual who has documented sufficient skills and knowledge of a trade, craft or occupation, either through formal apprenticeship or through practical on-the-job experience, and formal training.

This individual is recognized by his/her employer as being fully quali!ed to perform the work of the trade, craft or occupation.

ON-THE-JOB LEARNING (OJL): Tasks learned on the job in which the apprentice must become pro!cient before a completion certi!cate is awarded. The learning must be through structured, supervised work experience.

CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETIONThe Certi!cate of Completion of Apprenticeship issued by the Registration Agency to those registered apprentices certi!ed and documented as successfully completing the apprentice training requirements outlined in these Standards of Apprenticeship.

Insulator Apprenticeship

Program Overview.The length of the apprenticeship program will be three (3) years with an on-the-job training (OJL) attainment of forty-!ve hundred (4500) hours supplemented by the required hours of related instruction as stated on the Work Processes and Related Instruction Outlines.

Full credit will be given for the probationary period.

Apprentice Insulation Workers will receive training and perform work in the following:

• Apply, remove, and repair insulation on industrial equipment, pipes, ductwork, or other mechanical systems such as heat exchangers, tanks, and vessels, to help control noise and maintain temperatures.

• Cover, seal, or !nish insulated surfaces or access holes with plastic covers, canvas strips, sealants, tape, cement or asphalt mastic.

• Determine the amounts and types of insulation needed, and methods of installation, based on factors such as location, surface shape, and equipment use.

• Fit insulation around obstructions, shape insulating materials and protective coverings as required.

• Install sheet metal around insulated pipes with screws in order to protect the insulation from weather conditions or physical damage.

• Measure and cut insulation for covering surfaces, using tape measures, handsaws, knives, and scissors.

• Prepare surfaces for insulation application by brushing or spreading on adhesives, cement, or asphalt, or by attaching metal pins to surfaces.

• Read blueprints and speci!cations to determine job requirements.

• Select appropriate insulation such as !berglass, Styrofoam, or cork, based on the heat retaining or excluding characteristics of the material.

Work Process Component

Work Schedule.

The work process schedule consists of 5 modules and a minimum of 4,500 training hours and includes Commercial, Industrial, Refrigeration & Low Temperatures, Prefabrication and Safety procedures.

COMMERCIALThe commercial module consists of plumbing-heating-air conditioning (duct covering and linings including plenums) Total hours 2,250

INDUSTRIAL AND PROCESS PLANTThe industrial and process plant module consists of piping, vessels, equipment and so forth. Total hours 900.

REFRIGERATION AND LOW TEMPERATURESThe refrigeration and low temperature module consists of piping, vessel and equipment (not including space insulation). Total hours 225.

PREFABRICATIONThe prefabrication module consists of !ttings, head covers and related work. Total hours 675.

SAFETYThe safety module consists of on the job safety related work practices. Total hours 450.

Apprentices must have a valid driver's license and not be less than 18 years of age. A high school diploma or GED equivalency is required. Applicant must provide an official transcript(s) for high school and post high school education and training.

All GED records must be submitted if applicable. Applicants must submit a DD-214 to verify military training and/or experience if they are a veteran and wish to receive consideration for such training/experience.

Applicants will be physically capable of performing the essential functions of the apprenticeship program, with or without a reasonable accommodation, and without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of the individual or others.
