EMPATHIC CONVERSATIONS – AGED 60 & ABOVE

1. Technology is seen as irrelevant to the older generation as it barely existed when they were growing up.

2. It was safer to play outside back then.

3. Face to face conversation was more important.

Page 3: Inta Bin

1. Older people tended to be more respectful of

the environment than younger people.

2. Larger number of old people than young people.

3. Clear segregation between the old &young people.

4. No old person was observed using any form of technology.

FIELD OBSERVATION –DANE JOHN GARDENS

Page 4: Inta Bin

We established the common similarities between the conversation and the observation.

We established the most prominent problem and brainstormed ways to solve it.

We looked at interactive technologies currently out there.

We developed a prototype and carried out a survey to understand how the public will interact with it.

We researched other prototypes that resembled our solution.

WHAT: Littering

WHO: Young people (children to teenagers)

WHERE: Dane John Gardens

WHEN: All day

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Page 7: Inta Bin

• 90% of people felt that littering is a prominent problem in the park.

• 40% of them said they used the bins in the park.

• 50% of them had sufficient knowledge on recycling.

• 90 % of them said they would put their waste in a recycling bin if it was placed in the park.

• 75% of people said they would be interested in using a bin that allows them to watch their waste being recycled in seconds.

Majority of them felt that if the design of the bin was visually appealing, they would be more interested in interacting with it.

SURVEY

Page 8: Inta Bin

Main Functions:

1. Watch your trash being recycled live.

2. Play a game to interact with the bin afterwards.

SOLUTION

Page 9: Inta Bin

1. It educates young people about recycling in an engaging way.

2. Makes people feel safer in a cleaner environment.

3. It will allow increased interaction between people.

4. It focuses on re-envisioning the way people see the disposal of rubbish, motivating them towards positive behaviour, and eventually, creating awareness on waste management.

You might be wondering . . .

How would I know what kind

of trash to recycle?

If someone throws general waste in the bin while someone else is playing, what

might happen?

What external factors could be

involved with the creation of the bin?
