Text comprehension -II

1. T. Refer to Paragraphs 7 and 8. It was late that day before bedtime that the son came to his library and gave him a kiss, which made him realize how wrong he was in playing the kind of father he had been playing.

Page 45: Integrated English -3

The author applies the flashback technique in the account of a day when the father had an epiphany.

Page 46: Integrated English -3

Text Comprehension -III

1. He was cross with his son, and too harsh on him. He scolded his son for dabbing his face with a towel, for gulping down food at breakfast table, and for playing marbles; he even "humiliated" his son by making him march on before his boy friends.

Page 47: Integrated English -3

2. The father treated the son as a man. He expected too much of his son, and he used his own yardstick in judging his son. Another possible reason is the life pressure he may have to endure as is implied by the detail about stockings.

Page 48: Integrated English -3

3. By showing his childish, selfless/unselfish love, the son made his father realize love is the essence between parents and children.4. As the whole passage is the confession of a father, the father sounds remorseful and penitent. Also note a slight touch of the melodramatic ( 情节剧的 ,戏剧性的 ) tone when the father expressed his determination to become a real father the next day.5. Open for discussion.

Page 49: Integrated English -3

Structural analysis of the text

The events the author reports are not chosen in a causal fashion. He deliberately chooses the details to create the characters – an unreasonably harsh and cross father and a tender and affectionate son, and at the same time, reveal his remorse.

Page 50: Integrated English -3

Rhetorical features of the text

Here is an example from Paragraph 8: "a terrible, sickening fear." The juxtaposition of 'terrible, sickening" well serves the purpose of emphasizing the idea of strong fear.

Listening exercisesI Wish You EnoughPart A. I Wish You Enough

Recently, I overheard a father and daughter in their last moments together. The loudspeaker had announced the departure of the daughter's plane and they were standing near the security gate. They hugged and the father said, "I love you. I wish you enough. "

She said, "Daddy, our life together has been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough, too, Daddy. They kissed and she left.

Page 67: Integrated English -3

He walked over toward the window where I was seated. Standing there I could see he wanted and needed to cry. I tried not to intrude on his privacy, but he welcomed me in by asking, "Did you ever say good-bye to someone knowing it would be forever?""Yes, I have," I replied. Saying that brought back memories I had of expressing my love and appreciation for all my Dad had done for me. Recognizing that his days were limited, I took the time to tell him face to face how much he meant to me. So I knew what this man was experiencing, "Forgive me for asking, but why is this a forever good-bye," I asked.

Page 68: Integrated English -3

"I am old, and she lives much too far away. I am not in good health, and the reality is, her next trip back will be for my funeral," he said."When you were saying good-bye to each other I heard you say 'I wish you enough.' May I ask what that means?"He began to smile. "That's a wish that has been handed down from generation to generation in my family. My grandparents used to say it to my father and my father used to say it to me, and now I am saying it to my daughter. And she will say that to her children, too." He paused for a moment, and looking up as if trying to remember it in detail, he smiled even more. "When we said 'I wish you enough,' we were wanting the other person to have a life filled with enough good things," he continued and then turning toward me, he shared the following as if he were reciting it from memory.

Page 69: Integrated English -3

"I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright. I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more. I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive. I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger. I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting. I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess. I wish you enough 'Hello's' to get you through the final 'Good-bye.'"

Page 70: Integrated English -3

Part B. Heart SongOnce upon a time there was a great man who married the woman of his dreams. With their love, they created a little girl. When the little girl was growing up, the great man would hug her and tell her, "I love you, little girl." The little girl would pout and say, "I'm not a little girl any more." Then the man would laugh and say, "But to me, you'll always be my little girl."The little girl who was not little any more left her home and went into the world. As she learned more about herself, she learned more about the man. One of his strengths was his ability to express his love to his family. It didn't matter where she went in the world, the man would call her and say, "I love you, little girl."

Page 71: Integrated English -3

The day came when the little girl who was not little anymore received a phone call. The great man was damaged. He had had a stroke. He couldn't talk, smile, laugh, walk, hug, dance or tell the little girl who was not little anymore that he loved her.And so she went to the side of the great man. When she walked into the room and saw him, he looked small and not strong at all. He looked at her and tried to speak, but he could not. The little girl did the only thing she could do. She climbed up on the bed next to the great man. and drew her arms around the useless shoulders of her father. /Her head on his chest, she thought of many things. She remembered she had always felt protected and cherished by the great man. She felt grief for the loss she was to endure, the words of love that had comforted her.

Page 72: Integrated English -3

And then she heard from within the man, the beat of his heart. The heart beat on, steadily unconcerned about the damage to the rest of the body. And while she rested there, the magic happened. She heard what she needed to hear. His heart beat out the words that his mouth could no longer say: I love you, little girl … , I love you, little girl ... , and she was comforted.

Abstract of Text IIDear Son,

Today I want to tell you how to make people happy. It’s really hard to sum it up into rules, but from my experience I still have some advices. Firstly, you should follow the principle of “Do as you would be done by”. If you are pleased with something others have done to you, remember how they did it and try to do the same thing to others. Do not tell stories in company because it is the most tedious and unpleasant thing in the world. Don’t always center on yourself in your conversation with others, because others are not so interested in your affairs. Never continue to have an argument with heat and clamor.

Page 77: Integrated English -3

If you couldn’t convince others in a short period of time, just drop the topic with good temper. Choose appropriate topics according to the group of people you are together with. Talk with others about what they are interested in, make them think that they are wise, or, if you are talking with a woman, flatter her on her beauty. I don’t mean that you should flatter on people without a principle. It’s just a little flattery to indulge others’ little harmless vanity. So why not make them feel happy? The above mentioned are my life experience for which I’ve paid 53 years to get. I hope it can be beneficial to you.

Page 78: Integrated English -3

1. In most cases, a group of people with similar backgrounds have so much in common so far as humors, tastes or even weaknesses are concerned. If you feel happy with the complaisance and attention of others to something of yours, the same complaisance and attention you offer to theirs will equally make them happy. So it is very important to observe carefully what in others pleases you as the same things in you will most probably please them.

Page 79: Integrated English -3

2. Despite the fact that your own personal concerns or private affairs are interesting to yourself, they could be very tedious and impertinent to everybody else, as nobody else is concerned about your things as much as you are. Besides, you should never display your excellencies or labor in company, or you are apt to be regarded as a man obsessed with vanity and your affected attitude could be very contemptible.

Page 80: Integrated English -3

3. If you do so, you may probably raise expectations. As you know, expectations, more often than not, spell disappointment. If you fail to satisfy others' expectations, you may look deservedly like a fool.

Page 81: Integrated English -3

4. The object is their beauty. You may safely make this conclusion from the studied and elaborate dress of the ugliest woman in the world. No woman is ugly enough to be insensible to flattery upon her person. A woman tends to think that if she does not have a beautiful face, she may have a graceful figure. If she does not have either a beautiful face or a graceful figure, then she may have nice air. But do not flatter her shortcomings. Instead, she must be flattered upon her own understanding.
