The unit on “Using Design, Layout ,& Typography” provides students with the opportunity to use these three elements to improve the appearance of documents.

Expectations (TN DOE CTE Web site):

2.1 Analyzing composition processes.

2.2 Analyzing principles of typography.

2.3 Setting formatting styles and applying typographical commands to text.

2.4 Evaluating the effectiveness of typography in publications.

2.5 Contrasting and comparing the typography from at least two print sources.

2.6 Analyzing layout principles.

2.7 Analyzing principles of design.

2.8 Illustrate gradations in shapes and blend colors.

2.9 Illustrating methods of importing and exporting text and graphics.

Sample Performance Tasks (TN DOE CTE Web site): Applying fonts, gutters, tabs, letter spacing,

tracking, leading, and headings. Using different backgrounds contrast and

compare the typography of each. Designing and creating various projects that

combine text and graphics.

Unit 2, Daily Lesson Plans

Objectives: The learner will:

1. Analyze principles of typography (TDOE 2.2)

2. Set formatting styles and apply typographical commands to text (TDOE 2.3).

3. Illustrate gradations in shapes and blend colors (TDOE 2.8).

Set:

• Show students examples of documents including letters, reports, presentations, magazines, and newspaper. Have students comment on each document’s appearance.

• Then, show students the same or similar documents that are designed attractively and professionally. Have students share their reactions.

• Relate today’s objectives. – 15 minutes

Procedures:

• PP presentation and examples: Relate design principles and terminology. Discuss with students applications of design.– 20 minutes

Procedures (continued):

• Demonstration: Using U2S1 (Unit 2, Sample 1), demonstrate steps to enhance appearance of the sample. Then have students complete the steps with me. -- 20 minutes

• Individual Application: Have students complete Exercises 2.1 and 2.2 (pp. 40-42) on their own. They should refer to the models in the text to check their work. – 30 minutes

• Discuss strategies of planning a design. – 15 minutes

• Group Application: Have students work in groups of three to plan the design for Case 2.1, page 112. Students will use a design board in the planning stage. – 15 minutes

Closing:

• Review layout and design by asking questions and calling on specific students to respond.

• Recap group project and ask students to think more about their design. – 5 minutes

Supplemental Materials

• Before-and-after design samples • PowerPoint presentation and handouts (U2 - PP1)

Note: You only need to include supplementary materials that you will need for the Unit day you will teach. Be sure to include a concept and an application quizzes for one lesson and bring handouts for your students (8 sets)

Include presentation slides, lecture notes handouts, quizzes, tests, and/or other supplementary materials in the last two sections.

• Observation and on-the-spot feedback as students complete exercises.

• Exercise check-offs with feedback as needed.

• Unit test graded at end of unit.

6. Analyze principles of design, including

• Special effects;

• Thumbnail sketches;

• Guides, rulers, scales, menus, pallets; alignment and positioning, page design;

• Margins, gutters, tabs, letter spacing, tracking, leading, and headings;

• Columnar setup;

• Style formulation;

• Master page construction;

• Spot and process colors (TDOE 2.7).

Procedures:

• Group Discussion: Have students discuss, compare, and contrast the different designs shown in the set and in their handout (separate group discussion then class discussion). – 15 minutes

• Group Application: Have students continue to work in groups of three to plan their design for Case 2.1, page 42. Students will use a design board in the planning stage. – 15 minutes

• Individual Application: Have each student in each group complete Case 2.1 based on their group’s design plan. 60 minutes

Closing:

• Have students proofread, print, and submit Case 2.

• Review layout and design by asking questions and calling on specific students to respond. – 15 minutes
