6 ecocounters to measure visitors flows 6 Camera traps and data analysis to evaluate fauna disturbance 37 qualitative interviews with various user groups (indicating

conflicts, satisfaction, demands) Observations to identify various types of activities in time and space

Visitors flowsPrés de Villette : some results

Variations according to place, weekday, hours, seasons, weather conditions and material conditions

An approximate estimate of 10’ 080 visitors a year for the Prés de Villette

(Average from the 3 counters between Oct. 2012 and Oct. 2013 : 20’176 / 2 – which is a minimal number as people do often walk in a loop and may therefore pass only once in front of the ecocounter.)

Results of camera trapsPrés de Villette

Sample : 946 pictures taken from 3 camera traps (sampling over 4 weeksthrough 4 seasons 2013-2014)

The greatest frequentation is between 11:00 – 12:00 and 15:0 – 16:00 and between 18:00-19:00

60% of walkers are in pairs or more

During the period where dogs are requested to be on leash (April 1- July 15) over 80% are free (82.9%).

There are visitors all day long and even early and late at night so that the quiet time in the forest is reduced to about 4 hours

Wild fauna is only little represented on the pictures (CT not placed on corridors and not capable to catch small fauna)

Faunain Prés de Villette

and the Woods of Jussy and Douvaine

Photographed fauna in decreasing order of importance in and around the nature reserve of Prés-de-Villette Crows (Corvus corone); hares (Lepus Europaeus); fox (Vulpes vulpes); bore (Sus scrofa); roe deer (Capreolus capreolus); hédgehog (Erinaceus europaeus); Europeanbadger (Meles meles); small mustelids and diverse cats domestique (Felis silvestriscatus).

The only international red list species is the braun hare (LC - Préoccupation mineure). However numerous in the canton of Geneva, where there is no hunting since 1974.

Roe deer has been photographed only in the central zone of the nature reserve. The species is not so frequent, relatively easily disturbed by visitors especially by dogs. Roe deer is considered a priority species in the transboundary management plan. They are also the most frequently hit on the roads.

The priority mammals identified as important in the forest management plan are: Deer, polecat, hermine (stoat or ermine), musaraigne aquatique (shrew), muscardin, beavers for the priority species of flora – see annex(Plan de gestion transfrontalier Bois de Jussy – Bois de Douvaine. Octobre 2008. Ecotec).

III. Meeting visitors’ and wildlife needs : sensibilisation and participation at the center

Developing the transboundary region’s capacity in : Sensibilizing users (emphasis on communication) Regulating and enforcing adapted rules, by engaging users Monitoring of recreation with the participation of stakeholders

For conserving the woods of Jussy-Douvaine, strengthen : The role of high schools The role of NGOs The role of governmental agencies (local-international) The role of the land owners The role of citizens, users, workers and inhabitants

And further develop : Interdisciplinary applied research Cross sectoral management Transboundary governance

Institutional opportunities and constraints

Constraints :

Bi-national transboundary forest and park projectLack of strong regional governmental partner to

involve on the project on the French sideTransboundary Agglomeration : other priorities

(transport, housing, energy)Decreasing ressources of nature management

administrationsMultiplicity of small private owners in France in

particularLack of valorization by nature protection actors of

the recreation values (well being and nature education of inhabitants of the city)

Programme «Nature en ville» nature in the city maymarginalize interest in peri-urban forests

Insufficient access with soft mobility (public transportation)

Lack of political will

Opportunities :

Interreg IIIPlan de gestion massif 2008

A biological corridor recognized of importance between (Voirons and Léman)Agglomeration project of Greater Geneva

Regional crossboundary intercommunal association for the protection and valorization of the Massif Jussy-Douvaine centered on the rehabilitation of the Forest House into a nature center (PDC)

Swiss forest owners’ association JJPPDF 2008-2014 (biodiversity oriented forestry, tranquilityzones)

Natura 2000 sites (France), and network of 7 nature reserves including, two sites of national importance in canton Geneva (wetlands and batraciens).

Various inventories of fauna and flora (ZNIEFF )
