Integrated Power Solutions Modular and cost-effective power plant design

The Rolls-Royce modular concept is a pre-fabricated power plant design that combines the benefits of a high efficiency, environmentally friendly and cost-effective design power plant. Whether you need a complete power plant, an auxiliary power supply or a pumping set, anywhere in the world, we can supply the ideal product unrivalled in terms of efficiency and fuel consumption, reliability and availability.

Pre-fabricated and modular, the power plant design delivers the solution electricity power markets demand; a cost-effective, flexible system with the highest levels of performance, reliability and rapid delivery. Power plants from 2MW to 200MW and beyond can be configured for power generation or CHP (Combined Heat and Power) operation. Capable of running in isolated mode, or in parallel to the grid at times when electricity prices are high, the generating plant can operate at low variable costs with minimal environmental effect.

A further advantage of power plants manufactured by Rolls-Royce is the decentralisation of power production they deliver. Compared with a centralised plant that relies on grid electrical supplies, the independent plant minimises transmission and distribution losses, reduces costs and maximises power availability, particularly during grid failures.

High reliability and availability are built in features with all engines from Rolls-Royce. Spares requirements are low and all maintenance can be performed on site, enabling multi-engine applications to remain operational while a single unit undergoes maintenance.

Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG with its headquarters in Friedrichshafen, Germany, is a specialist for large engines, propulsion systems and distributed energy systems.

The product portfolio includes MTU brand high-speed engines and propulsion systems for ships, for heavy land, rail and defence vehicles, and for the oil and gas industry. Under the MTU Onsite Energy brand, the company markets diesel gensets for continuous, prime, peak and standby applications, in addition to cogeneration plants for the generation of combined heat and power based on gas engines. Medium speed engines of Rolls-Royce Power Systems are produced in Norway for marine and power generation applications. L’Orange rounds off the portfolio with fuel injection systems for large engines.

Industry-best for the environment and efficiency

The capabilities of natural gas as a clean, reliable, widely available and cost-effective fuel for industrial power plants is equalled by the ability of Rolls-Royce to deliver highly efficient gas and liquid engines for operators worldwide.

Besides building individual gas and liquid fuel engines, Rolls-Royce has considerable global experience in providing plants that exploit the full capability of the prime movers.

Rolls-Royce experience in the reciprocating engine markets spreads across all five continents. In Europe alone we have sold more than 590 gas engines since the first engine entered service in 1991.

Rolls-Royce has proven experience in completing and running turnkey projects through a combination of engineering, procurement, construction and Long-Term Service Agreements. From concept to multi-decade operational capability, Rolls-Royce expertise in engines and their power plants leads the world.

The engines operate at high levels of environmental quality and typically reach close to 50 per cent efficiency, or more than 95 per cent in combined heat and power. These levels of efficiency bring considerable savings in fuel consumption compared with other systems.

They also provide the advantage of multi-unit configuration, in which you can optimise the output of the plant to match specific requirements of varying loads. This enables you to operate each engine at its optimum efficiency.

Increased power production can be achieved by installing a heat recovery system and a steam turbine, typically increasing power production in the range of 10 per cent with no additional fuel consumption. For intermediate peaking and base load operations, this reduces the cost of electricity and increases the economic benefits of the plant. The concept allows this option to be included in the design, or for the steam turbine to be added later.

Engines are extremely robust and are ideal for operations in the most demanding industrial environments. Output deterioration with altitude, or in very hot ambient conditions, is minimal. Rolls-Royce gas engines also run on low-pressure gas, meaning they can be located virtually anywhere that requires efficient and reliable power production.
