FeaturesThe RM-AX4000 Remote Commanderprovides centralized control of all yourAV components from a single remotecontrol and saves the trouble of operatingdifferent AV components with differentremote control devices. The following areits main features.

Control up to 16 componentsWith the Remote Commander, you cancontrol up to 16 components, includingyour TV, VCR, DVD, DVR, CD, RCVR,etc.

Centralized control of Sony AVcomponents with this one RemoteCommanderThe Remote Commander is preset at thefactory to operate Sony brandcomponents, so you can use it out of thebox as a control center for your Sony AVcomponents.

Remote control signals for non-Sonycomponents are also presetThe Remote Commander also recognizesthe preset codes for most major brandscomponents, as well as Sony. Just selectthe corresponding codes to control allyour AV components.

XPRESS functions for executing aseries of actions to operate severalAV components by pressing just onekey.Groups of commands from differentcomponents can be set for up to 8XPRESS functions. For example, whenyou watch a DVD using a TV andamplifier/receiver, you can press just onekey to turn on/off each component, andselect the correct inputs. Available keysfor the XPRESS function appear on theLCD display.Also, the XPRESS function can memorizethe status of power on/off, input selectstatus of each component, and send asignal to synchronize them to the RemoteCommander, regardless of their current.

Air-Slide executes an XPRESSfunction by “sliding your finger”across the LCD displayYou can also perform an XPRESSfunction by sliding your finger in a setpattern across the Remote Commander'sLCD Display. This function is called an“Air-Slide”, and 6 different patterns areavailable.The AX Remote Editor software allowsyou to make advanced settings for theRemote Commander.

Clock display and Timer functionUp to 8 Timer macros can beprogrammed to automatically turn on/off components and other controls (suchas recording, stopping, etc.).

Learning function lets you programother remote control signals you mayneedThe Remote Commander can learn theremote control infrared signals of non-preset components. The RemoteCommander can learn remote controlsignals (infrared signals only) of otherdevices such as air conditioners, lights,etc. (some specific appliances orfunctions may not be available).

System Control function executes aseries of actions (a macro) bypressing one button/keyIn addition to the XPRESS function, moresettings can be programmed to perform aseries of actions (a macro) just bypressing one button. You can program upto 8 System Control functions.Furthermore, you can program a series ofactions (a macro) to other buttons as asingle step of an XPRESS function orcomponent operation.

KeyMacro function allows you toselect a channel with a single keyThe Remote Commander allows you toprogram a macro for a key to operate anAV component. For example, you cancreate a macro that enters the numbers 1,2, and 3, to select channel 123 just bypressing one key.The AX Remote Editor software allowsyou to make advanced settings for theRemote Commander.

Easy-to-operate Touch-key LCD withblue back lightThe Remote Commander has a Touch-key LCD that changes keys and labelsaccording to the selected component. TheRemote Commander is easy to operate asonly the keys necessary to operate theselected component are shown. Thedisplay backlight allows operation evenin the dark.

The supplied software “AX RemoteEditor” for easy Remote CommandersetupBy installing the “AX Remote Editor” onthe supplied CD-ROM onto your PC, youcan customize the setting of the RemoteCommander according to yourpreferences. Installing the batteriesSlide and open the battery compartmentlid and insert four size AA (R6) alkalinebatteries (not supplied). Be sure to matchthe + and – of the batteries with the +and – of the battery compartment.

When to replace thebatteries

When replacing the batteries, do itquickly. Otherwise, the memorysettings for the clock will be erased.The clock does not work whilereplacing the batteries.Alkaline batteries will last up to 5months (a Sony TV turned On/Off up toapprox. 300 times per day). If the RemoteCommander does not operate properly,the batteries are getting weak and Eappears on the LCD display. When theLCD display dims or the backlight for thetouch keys grows dim, the batteries aregetting weak, and need to be replaced.

Notes on replacing the batteries• Do not attempt to recharge dry batteries.• Do not carry dry batteries together with coins

or other metallic objects. This can generateheat if the positive and negative terminals ofthe batteries accidentally come into contactwith metallic objects.

• When you are not going to use the unit for along time, remove the batteries to avoiddamage from battery leakage and corrosion.

• Do not use different types of batteries at thesame time.

• When you replace the batteries, replace themboth with new ones.

How to set up the RemoteCommander (On-PC Setupand On-Remote Setup)

There are two ways to make settings forthe Remote Commander, “On-PC Setup”with the aid of PC software and “On-Remote Setup” directly on the RemoteCommander.

• On-PC Setup (Recommended)“On-PC Setup” uses the suppliedsoftware for your PC, “AX RemoteEditor” to set up the RemoteCommander. By following the wizard,it allows you to easily make all thenecessary settings for the RemoteCommander (components’ presetcodes, etc.,). Furthermore, you can addand customize a range of settingswhich are not available with On-Remote Setup.

• On-Remote Setup“On-Remote Setup” is a way of settingup directly with the RemoteCommander. However, some advancedsettings are not available with On-Remote setup (see the table on page14).

See “Setting procedure for On-PC Setup”(page 14), or “Setting procedure for On-Remote Setup” (page 15) for each settingmethod.

IMPORTANTYou cannot use both methods. Once youset up the Remote Commander by eitherOn-PC Setup (recommended) or On-Remote Setup, you cannot makeadditional settings using the othermethod. You can only delete the entiresetup and start over using the other setupmethod.

Setting up for your PCBy installing the “AX Remote Editor” onthe supplied CD-ROM onto your PC, youcan set up the Remote Commandersimply with your PC.“AX Remote Editor” makes setting upcomplex series of operations (a macro)easy, and also allows various otherconvenient functions to be set up. Installing the “AX RemoteEditor”

Follow the instructions below to install.

Notes• Do not simply copy the “AX Remote Editor”

folder in the supplied CD-ROM to a PC. Youneed to install it properly for it to work.

• Administrator privileges are required forinstallation on PCs running Windows 2000 orWindows XP.

1 Close all software running onWindows.

2 Insert the supplied CD-ROM intothe CD-ROM drive of the PC.

After a moment, “RM-AX4000 InstallCD Menu” appears.

3 Click [Install AX Remote Editor].“AX Remote Editor 1.1 Setup”appears.

4 Click [Next].Follow the on-screen instructions andproceed with the installation.

TipIf the installation screen is hidden behindother windowsIf “AX Remote Editor 1.1 Setup” disappearsbehind other screen while installing, pressthe [Tab] key several times while pressingdown the [Alt] key to bring up “AX RemoteEditor 1.1 Setup” again.

IMPORTANTDo not keep the Remote Commanderconnected to the PC when the PC is instandby/hibernation, otherwise, amalfunction could occur. Be sure todisconnect the Remote Commander from thePC before standby/hibernation begins.Furthermore, do not connect the RemoteCommander to the PC while it is in standby/hibernation. Notes• The Remote Commander uses the battery

multiple AV components related to aspecific task, such as “watching aDVD,” or “watching a digital satellite,”etc. This is called an “XPRESSfunction.”

• Single component operation: You canoperate each AV componentindividually (page 27).

What is the XPRESSfunction?

An “XPRESS function” is an executableseries of actions that can operate severalAV components by pressing just one key.For example, you have to perform thefollowing operations sequentially towatch a DVD using a TV, receiver/amplifier, and DVD player.1. components are too far apart, or if somethingis blocking them, some of the componentsmay not operate in the ordered sequencewhen you press a SYSTEM CONTROLbutton or System Control key.

Notes• If you enter a preset code that is not on the

table in the supplied “Preset Code Lists,” theRemote Commander beeps five times. Thedigits you input and “NG” appear on theLabel key after you press the OK button. Theprevious setting returns. If this happens,check the preset code, and try setting again.

• If you do not enter any data to the RemoteCommander for over 2 minutes between eachstep, the setup procedure will be canceled. Toset the preset code again, press the MUTINGbutton while pressing the COMMANDEROFF button.

Controlling the volumeof visual componentsconnected to an audiocomponent

The Remote Commander is factory presetbased on the assumption that you hearthe sound of your visual componentsfrom your TV speakers, and that youhear sound of your audio componentsfrom the loudspeakers connected to youramplifier.

This feature enables you to control thevolume of your TV or amplifier withoutselecting TV or RCVR each time tocontrol the volume.For example, to control the volume whileusing a VCR, you do not need to selectthe TV to control the TV volume. Withthe Remote Commander, you can switchthe volume of all the visual componentsto the amplifier.

• Get closer to the component. The maximum operating distance isapproximately 32.8 ft. (10 m).

• Check that you are aiming the Remote Commander directly at thecomponent, and that there are no obstructions between theRemote Commander and the component.

• Turn on the components first, if necessary.• Check that the component has infrared remote capability. For

example, if your component did not come with the RemoteCommander, it probably is not capable of being controlled by aRemote Commander.

• The volume buttons and cursor buttons, and some others,continue to work when they are pressed and held. If you programthe signals of such buttons, RM-AX4000 Remote Commander maynot learn the signals accurately. Reprogram the signals bycontinuing to hold down the desired button of the other remotecontrol until “Learning is complete.” appears in the “AX4000Remote Editor” screen.

• The batteries of the other remote control are weak. Replace withnew ones and reprogram the signals.

Unit Setting of the project set up on your PC is activated if youdownload data changed on your PC with the “Download the UnitSetting data together with the project data” box checked.

Solution

Check the remaining battery level. If low, replace with new ones.

The Remote Commander is preset at the factory to turn the displayoff automatically if you do not operate for more than 5 minutes. Youcan reset the automatic-off time to 1-30 minutes (page 37).

The beep is turned off. Turn the beep on (page 41).

Check the Timer setting (page 29). When the battery power is weakor empty, or if the battery is removed for a long time, the Timersetting may be cleared.

Calibrate the alignment of the LCD display (page 39).

The contrast level is too low. Set the contrast of the LCD displayhigher. While pressing the COMMANDER OFF button, press theOK button. And then press the CHANNEL + button a few times toincrease the contrast.

In case of On-Remote Setup, XPRESS function controls only thepower on/off of the component. If you want to control the inputselector of the TV, etc., follow the procedure for On-PC Setup.

• Make sure that you have programmed the commands in thecorrect order (page 51).

• Try changing the orientation of the Remote Commander. If thatdoes not help, try placing the components as close to each other aspossible.

• Check the status of the components and make sure that you haveset the components properly to receive commands.

• The preset codes are changed or new signals have been learnedfor a key or button that has been programmed with a series ofactions. In this case, the new signals are transmitted when theseries of actions is executed.

• The component could not receive the signal from the RemoteCommander successfully. When using the Timer, check thefollowing.– Check that the Timer macro functions correctly by pressing the

TEST key, after setting the Timer macro (page 59).– Check the location of the Remote Commander.

• The status of the component is not suitable for operation (forexample, you programmed the power-on setting, assuming thatpower of the component is off when the Timer turns on.However, if the power of the component is on when thecomponent receives the signal from the Remote Commander, thecomponent will turn off).

• The Remote Commander memorizes the status of the component'sinput selector and power on/off. However, if you turn on/off thecomponent with the remote control or operate the componentdirectly, it will not recognize the current component status. In thiscase, press the SYNC-UP button to synchronize with the status ofthe current component and the Remote Commander.

• If the TV turns off by its own Sleep function, the RemoteCommander does not recognize its status. Turn off the TV withthe Remote Commander. You can also turn off the TV at thescheduled time with the Timer on the Remote Commander.

• If you set a component code after changing the label of acomponent, they are cleared and return to the original label.Change the label of a component after you decide the componentto be used by presetting a code.

Make sure that the Remote Commander has learned the correctsignals. See “For accurate learning” (page 51) and try the learningprocedure again (page 48).

• Leaning has not succeeded. After checking the following, try thelearning procedure again (page 48).– Change the distance between the Remote Commander and

remote control.– See “For accurate learning” (page 51).

• The preset codes cannot be set. See the supplied “Preset CodeLists” and try setting the preset codes again (page 45).

• When you make the Remote Commander learn the remote controlsignals, be sure to keep about 1 to 3 inches (3 to 8 cm) between theremote control of the components and the Remote Commander.

• Check the remaining battery level of the remote control of thecomponents. If low, replace with new ones.

• Avoid learning in places under direct sunlight or strongfluorescent light. The Remote Commander may fail to learnremote control signals under strong light.

• When you program signals of an interactive signal exchangesystem remote control unit (supplied with some of Sony’sreceivers and amplifiers) to the Remote Commander, the responsesignal of the main unit may interfere with the learning of theRemote Commander. In such a case, move to a place where thesignals will not reach the main unit (e.g. other rooms, etc.).

• Perform the Learning procedure after turning off any nearbyapparatus, such as an air-conditioner or infrared headphones.

• The Remote Commander may fail to learn remote control signalsnear plasma TVs. Avoid learning near plasma TVs or turn off theplasma TV when learning

• Learned signals have been programmed for the button or key towhich you want to set the learning, System Control function.Clear the learned signals (page 54) and try setting again.

• Learn the signal within 10 sec after selecting a key/button youwant to program.

The Remote Commander cannot learn them. If you want to adjustthe radio band or frequency, operate it manually.

The batteries are weak. Replace with new ones.

• If you do not operate for more than 120 seconds during settingmode, the Remote Commander automatically exits the settingmode and turns off. Perform the next operation step within 120seconds.

If the firmware is updated, allthe settings or learned data of the Remote Commander are deletedand the Remote Commander is set back to the factory setting.For On-Remote Setup: See “Erasing all the settings” (page 68).

When you have a multiple components (such as a DVD/VCRcombo), select only one of either component type. For example, inthe case of a DVD/VCR combo, select “DVD” or ”VCR”. If youselect both components, the XPRESS function will not workproperly.

For On-PC Setup: You can set multiple XPRESS functions for onecomponent. For example, when you watch a DVD, you can set thesound to output from the TV. Or, when you listen to a CD, you canset the sound to output from the RCVR (Receiver/Amplifier).For On-Remote Setup: You can set an XPRESS function for only onecomponent. Choose either XPRESS_DVD or XPRESS_CD.
