Success StoryWorld’s Largest Modernization Project for Power Plant I&C in South AfricaThe Kriel power plant has a “sixpack configuration” comprising six units and a capacity of 3,000 MW; it is one of the largest plants in South Africa. Complete replacement of the Instrumentation and Control (I&C) systems will extend the service life of this plant, built nearly 30 years ago, by another 20 years. This Siemens I&C technology is designed especially for power plant applications, that is, closed- and open-loop control of power plants and turbines on a common I&C platform. Siemens I&C enables the operator to flexibly and precisely tailor the operating mode of these units to its needs. Installation of SPPA-T3000 I&C technology improves the availability and cost-effectiveness of the overall power plant.

Success StoryWater Purification in SingaporeMetropolitan areas like Singapore present enormous challenges when it comes to supplying people and industry with goods, energy and clean water. The latter is in short supply, particularly in Asia. Singapore can cover only half of its demand through rainfall and ground water; the rest must be imported from neighboring country. The government was concerned about this dependency until it discovered a new source with the help of Siemens: the city’s own waste water. NEWater is the result of intensive purification process that combines innovative membrane and UV technologies. Another major water recycling project is the Siemens Deep Tunnel waste water system. Siemens will supply the highly efficient odor control system for this project, along with the treatment technology for primary and secondary waste water purification.

Success StoryGas Liquefaction Installations in QatarIn the coming years, Qatar wants to further increase its production and export of liquefied natural gas (LNG). For this purpose, the CTJV consortium (made up of Chiyoda Corporation, Japan and Technip S.A., France) will build two new gas liquefaction lines for RasGas Co. Ltd., each line with a capacity of 7.8 million metric tons per year. Both are scheduled for commissioning in 2008 and 2010 respectively. The Siemens scope of supply comprises of power distribution systems fro the new LNG lines which includes the 132 kV, 33 kV and 6.6 kV medium-voltage switchgear as well as low-voltage switchgear. Siemens is also responsible for supervising the installation work as well as for testing and pre-commissioning of the power distribution systems.

Success StoryDrive and Power Engineering for Siam Pulp and Paper in ThailandSiemens has received orders from two subsidiaries of Siam Pulp and Paper Co. Ltd. to install drive and power engineering systems. The new PM9 paper machine belonging to Thai Union Paper Industry Co. Ltd. at the Wangsala works, in the province of Kanchanaburi, is being equipped with a Sinamics S120 three-phase multi-motor drive from Siemens. The scope of supply covers the entire power distribution system including the medium-voltage switchgear, distribution of transformers and a motor control center (MCC) for the paper machine and waste paper treatment plant. Siemens is also responsible for commissioning and will supply all installed components on a turnkey basis. The Siam Kraft Industry Co. Ltd. in Banpong, Rachburiprovince, produces kraft board, corrugated board, extensible sack kraft and kraft paper for producing core paper. Siemens is replacing the DC drives with a Sinamics three-phase multi-motor drive on a turnkey basis.

Success StoryModernization of cement line in Lafarge, MalaysiaSiemens received an order from Lafarge Malayan Cement Berhad for turnkey modernization of production line No. 3 in the company’s Kanthan cement factory. The line will be fitted a new Cemat V.6 process control system based on Simatic PCS7and new electrical equipment. Siemens will also supply the new alternating-current drives, motor control centers with Sivacon 8PT switchboards and medium-voltage Siprotecdevices and will install emergency power supply equipment, including an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). The new process instrumentation from Siemens will provide the control system with all the important process data. Siemens is responsible for the basic and detailed engineering, for designing the interfaces of all the electrical and automation equipment and for integrating the new equipment in the existing factory.

Success StoryMetallurgical Facilities for New Iron and Steel Works in TaiwanThe Taiwanese steel producer Dragon Steel Corporation awarded Siemens a series of orders for the design and supply of a new sinter plant, blast furnace and slab caster. These metallurgical facilities will be part of a new iron and steel works that will be built in the harbor area of Taichung. The sinter plant will be designed with a nominal production capacity of 7,440 tons of sinter per day. The plant will incorporate the latest sintering technologies to assure a high and constant sinter quality, low operating costs and minimum environmental impact. A blast furnace with hearth dimension of 12 meters and an inner volume 3,274 m3 will be supplied to enable the production of 2.5 million tons of iron per year. In the 2-strand slab caster a total of 2.6 million tons of high-quality slabs will be cast per year. The steel grades will rangefrom low- to high-carbon steels, peritectic grades, micoalloyed and HSLA (high-strength, low allow) grades.

Success StorySupply and Services of Technical Systems for Bangalore Airport in India Siemens received a contract from Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) in India for the supply and services of technical systems for the greenfield airport project. Siemens has developed the Internet-based solution called Energy Monitoring and Controlling (EMC). By providing automated data processing and analysis of decentralized meter readings in a central database, EMC is especially suited for customers with a large number of geographically distributed buildings. Detailed reports on the consumption of energy or media and the associated costs can be obtained everywhere and at any time, whether for all the hotels operated by a global hotel chain, a regional pool of hotels, a single building or an individual meter. In addition to the different consumption reports in a uniform format, CO2 emission reports can be produced as well. To comply with the ambitious construction schedule, up to 40 Siemens engineers worked on the installation an average of 15 hours per day during peak periods. In addition to the planning, delivery and installation, Siemens was also in charge of commissioning the entire fiber-optic and copper-wire-based data and telecommunication infrastructure as well as a stadium-wide telephone system (PBX).
