Integrating information towards Digital ATM
FAA/SESAR Coordination on Data Modelling
Presented By: Paul Jackson

Agenda
• What is the NAS OV-7 ?• What is the SESAR AIRM ?• NextGen SESAR Data Model Coordination
Group• Proposal: ICAO ATM Information Reference
Model

What is the NAS OV-7 ?• Operational View 7 per the FAA Integrated Systems Engineering
Framework (ISEF – based on DoDAF)• Logical data model (LDM) for the NAS Enterprise
– Logical structure and definitions of entities and data types supporting the business operations
• Constructed using UML Class diagram notation• Standards-based
– Goals:• Derive and/or map physical database models and exchange structures• Provide Guidance for NAS compliant implementations• Scope derived models to the Enterprise
– Increases shared understanding with national and international partners– Standardization facilitates interoperability

SESAR AIRM
This provides a reference model of the SESAR information concepts for operational experts.
This provides a reference model of the SESAR data concepts for service architects and system implementers.

What is the SESAR AIRM-CLDM?
• The AIRM-CLDM is the counterpart of the NAS-OV7– Logical structure and definitions of entities and data types
supporting the business operations • Constructed using UML Class diagram notation• Standards-based
– Used to build SWIM compliant solutions – Goal is to derive and/or map physical models (e.g.
exchange structures, European ATM service messages).– Increases shared understanding with national and
international partners.– Standardization facilitates interoperability
5
NextGen SESAR Data Model Coordination Group (NSDMCG)• Part of FAA/SJU Coordination Plan 2.1 “SWIM
Interoperability”• Objectives
• Facilitate semantic information/data interoperability through common information/data definitions
• Foster unambiguous understanding through common agreements and standards
• Provide recommendations and guidance on topics related to shared data, governance, and interoperability
6
NSDMCG – current achievements
• Focus on NAS-OV7 and SESAR AIRM-CLDM• Gap Analysis and Action Plan• Harmonization results at the level of Units of
Measure (UoM), subject fields, definitions, etc…
• White Papers– ICAO AIRM Considerations– ICAO AIRM Governance Recommendations
7
NSDMCG – ongoing work
• Harmonization of common foundation (e.g. geometric primitives, codelists, etc…)
• Service payload (message type) compliance aspects
• Registry aspects

ICAO AIRM Considerations Paper
• Scope• Identify ICAO AIRM as crucial element of Global
Interoperability Framework (GIF)• Provide a Semantic Reference Framework for
existing and new Information Exchange Models• An agreed common foundation including aspects
such as Temporality, Geography, Open Standards, and Units of Measure
10
ICAO AIRM - Proposal
• Phase 1 – Design– Establish Global Interoperability
Strategy/Framework– Define Scope of ICAO AIRM– Define Governance of ICAO AIRM– Provide Conformance Rules
• E.g. Exchange model traceability to ICAO AIRM
– Identify Registry Requirements
11
ICAO AIRM - Proposal
• Phase 2 – Proof-of-Concept– Design Registry from Requirements– Define a Pilot Project with Manageable
Components.– Begin Registration with Governance/Conformance
rules– Demonstration of ICAO AIRM Framework
