Intel® architecture platform products
Microprocessors, also called central processing
units (CPUs) or chips, are frequently described as
the “brains” of a computer, because they control the
central processing of data in personal computers
(PCs), servers, workstations and other computers. Intel
offers microprocessors optimised for each segment
of the computing market. Chipsets perform essential
logic functions surrounding the CPU in computers,
and support and extend the graphics, video and other
capabilities of many Intel processor based systems.
Motherboards combine Intel microprocessors and
chipsets to form the basic subsystem of a PC or server.
Networking and communications products
These products include network connectivity products

Billions of Australian dollars in customer
transactions flow through the Westpac online
banking site per month. As one of the top four
Australian banks, Westpac wanted to meet its
online banking customers’ needs and manage
and maintain its site while ensuring capacity for
future growth.
Architectural limitations of the existing system
meant that to keep up with customer demand,
Westpac needed to scale up with Unisys ES7000
servers running Microsoft Windows 2000
Datacenter Server.
The new system has not missed a beat since
installation, providing shorter customer response
time, greater functionality and reliability to its
online banking facility. It services around 200,000
customers and up to six million transactions
a day – a threefold application performance
improvement.
Westpac can now expand the architecture by
scaling up without significantly increasing the
costs of operation and support and restricting the
services or capabilities it delivers to customers.
As a result, the bank can now work to react faster
to customer needs and continue to operate and
maintain the environment while the service is
active around the clock.
The online banking system is a core pillar of
Westpac’s multi-channel strategy, which is about
enabling customers to bank when and where
they want. It is convenient and easily accessible
allowing the bank to cement relationships with
customers online, increasing retention rates.
The technology also increases the bank’s speed
to market with competitive products and services.
The Unisys ES7000 is mainframe-style
technology with the only platform that maximises
the enterprise scalability and reliability of
Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server to
support the most demanding applications. The
technology is based on the Unisys Cellular Multi-
Processing (CMP) architecture, the only server
architecture that can scale up to 32 processors
and up to 32GB of memory in Windows 2000
Datacenter Server operating environment.
The ES7000 is the only server to offer from eight
to 32 Intel Xeon Processors or Intel Itanium 2
Processors, giving Westpac substantially more
server expansion headroom for anticipated growth.
Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server is the
most powerful enterprise server operating system
offered by Microsoft. Developed specifically for
high-traffic computer networks to be a flexible
and cost-effective operating environment for
business-critical workloads, especially when
Internet based.
Westpac also relies on a joint Unisys and
Microsoft Datacenter-only support service with
one number to call and one point of responsibility
for all hardware and operating system issues.

You know that reducing risk and maximising
your future options are as much a part of
enterprise IT management as reducing
overheads and maximising return on investment.
A commitment by you to approach enterprise
computing on standardised building blocks,
using world-class performance, on scalable
technology platforms, and adopting an
operating environment that dovetails with your
existing desktop environment, is a commitment
you dare not ignore.
Embracing such a commitment will allow
you to deliver your organisation’s potential
to the level demanded by your customers
and your stakeholders.
> Where to go? What to do?
But does such an option exist? Yes, it does.
Unisys and Microsoft have been working
together to deliver on this potential since
1999, when the Unisys ES7000 Microsoft
mainframe, running Intel processors, using
Unisys Cellular Multiprocessing technology,
and running Microsoft Windows Datacenter
Server, was launched.
Today sees that potential delivered still
further, with the launch of Microsoft
Windows Server 2003, and extensions to
the ES7000 range upwards and downwards
– yet maintaining the benefits of scalability,
reliability and availability.
Unisys and Microsoft:Delivering on Potential
> Tomorrow’s enterprise future
Windows mainframes
Customers around the world have shown
that ES7000 servers are the ultimate systems for
standardising on Microsoft Windows.
They have discovered the benefits of
consolidating distributed Windows servers
onto fewer, larger servers. They are creating
adaptive IT infrastructures that dynamically
adapt to changing workload volumes.
And they are dramatically simplifying their
operations and reducing their costs, by
eliminating under-used server resources.
In short, with the ES7000 and Microsoft
enterprise operating systems, they are exploiting
mainframe power with server economy.
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise
Edition, and Datacenter Edition, running on
Unisys ES7000 servers, increases productivity.
You can standardise your IT environment on
Windows from desktop to the data centre.
What does this mean to your business and
your IT infrastructure management? You can
deploy new applications and scale your Internet
infrastructure more quickly and easily. You save
on IT staff time and effort. Your end users are
more productive. Your customers experience
improved service.
Any Windows-based applications or database
that runs currently on any other Intel-baser
server will run on the ES7000. There are no
changes needed, no hidden costs in moving
platform. This is because ES7000 servers
are built with industry-standard components.
We’ve done this on the back of our mainframe
heritage (Unisys invented the commercial
digital mainframe, after all) using Cellular
MultiProcessing architecture. And we are now
extending the ES7000 range in both directions.
Distributed server environments are labour
intensive, costly and complex. Unisys
overcomes this barrier to business efficient and
customer service with Unisys Server Sentinel
and Application Sentinel – self-managing
technologies that deliver advanced management
services to the server and the application layers
of ES7000/Windows-based enterprises.
Unisys Server Sentinel software works with its
hardware and Windows operating system to
self-heal ES7000s. This preventative approach
drastically reduces the human intervention
needed to manage your data centre. It monitors
the system, alerts you when an event occurs
and can even repairs problems before you know
that they exit. It increases the entire system’s
availability, improves overall performance and
reduces the total cost of ownership.
> Where to go? What to do?
Unisys has now extended the potential still
further, with new additions to the ES7000 range.
The concept is deceptively simple: mainframe
building blocks, essentially 4-processor CMP
“mini-mainframes” that slide, on demand,
into frames to build increasing capability in a
scalable way. This scalability is seamless from
four to 32 processors. The headroom just
increased, and the costs just decreased.
> Supporting your decision
You’ve decided to build your IT infrastructure
with Microsoft Windows technology. Unisys
provides the infrastructure services that secure,
transform, support and manage your new
enterprise IT environment. The components,
applications the servers, mainframes, desktop
and mobile systems, networks, databases
and the people using this infrastructure are all
covered by these services. You’re enjoying the
maximum leverage from your investments and
decreasing the costs.

of enterprise solutions across heterogeneous
systems and company boundaries.
That’s the power of SAP NetWeaver, the next
evolution of mySAP Technology. SAP NetWeaver
integrates people, information, and business
processes across technologies and organisations.

your storage environment. They are designed to provide great flexibility by
making centralized storage accessible across the local area network (LAN).
NAS servers are self-contained, intelligent devices that attach directly
to your existing LAN. A file system is located and managed directly on
the NAS device, and data is transferred to clients over industry-standard
network protocols (TCP/IP) using industry-standard file-sharing protocols
(SMB/CIFS, NCP, NFS, AFP or HTTP). These flexible, multi-platform devices
can be easily and seamlessly integrated into your network, providing a

you require as you grow your environment.
The PowerVault tape backup family includes internal and external tape
drives, tape autoloaders to automate the backup process, and tape
libraries to allow for unattended backup and recovery. Regardless of
your backup architecture, Dell can provide solutions for direct attached,
LAN attached or SAN backup to help shrink your backup window and
improve application and data availability.

CASE STUDIES
Rackspace Managed Hosting Case Study
Case Study Overview:
Rackspace Managed Hosting stands out in the hosting market. Founded
in 1998 on the premise that Web hosting requires great service as
well as great servers, Rackspace has thrived, achieving profitability in
January 2001, while other players have wilted. Rackspace entrusts its
most mission-critical corporate accounts to Dell PowerEdgeTM servers
based on the new Intel® XeonTM processor. Dell’s cutting-edge server
technology, sophisticated server management tools, excellent
price/performance, and broad portfolio of services have compelled
Rackspace to move more of its data centre infrastructure to Dell.
Challenge:
The challenge was to keep pace with a Web hosting company
expanding at a rate of 500 new servers per month. Find a vendor
that knows enterprise computing and can provide advanced server
management capabilities and next-generation server technology.
Make sure server price/performance enhances corporate profitability.
Solution:
Their Dell solution: Deploy Rackspace’s Intensive HostingTM enterprise
customers onto Dell PowerEdge servers based on the Intel Xeon
processor. Use Dell OpenManageTM server management tools to
manage Dell servers spread over three data centers containing more
than 6,500 servers. Microsoft Windows 2000 Server software
provides best-of-breed monitoring tools and rock-solid stability.
Benefit:
Dell consulting, support, and financial services match Rackspace’s own
commitment to Fanatical SupportTM
Windows Server 2003 Improves Competitiveness
As a member of Microsoft’s Rapid Adoption Program, Rackspace has
already upgraded its infrastructure to Windows Server 2003 with
Internet Information Server (IIS) version 6.0. “We need to move to the
latest technology to stay ahead of the competition,” explains Engates.
“In the long run, we anticipate that Windows Server 2003 is going to
give us easier administration and higher reliability. Developer features
such as Common Language Runtime and object-oriented development
will help save us time to market and ease development hurdles. Having
the latest technology also makes us more appealing to prospective
customers.” Windows Server 2003 has been designed and rewritten
from the ground up to provide high dependability, better memory
utilisation, improved security, easy administration, easy and more
powerful clustering, and robust Active Directory features. New Active
Directory features include group policy administration, flexible domain
naming and renaming and easy server encryption.
Partners in Pushing Enterprise Computing
Rackspace views Dell as an able ally in its effort to push
enterprise computing to new performance and availability highs
and new price/performance lows. Its Dell PowerEdge 2650 and
6650 systems already deliver five-nines availability, redundant
fans and power supplies, and Dell OpenManage management
capabilities. “We’re really impressed with Dell’s commitment to
the enterprise server market,” Moorman says. “We’ve become
evangelists for Dell. We feel like we are tackling the server
market together.”
Monster.com Case StudyCase Study Overview:
Monster.com is the #1 job search site on the Web. The company has
grown steadily since its inception in the early 1990s, and the recent
economic downturn has meant even more traffic for Monster. Even in the
face of explosive growth, Monster.com continues to deliver fast response
times, a steady stream of innovative features, and healthy profitability.
The secret? A technology infrastructure based on Dell PowerEdge
servers and Microsoft software. This flexible, cost-effective platform
helps Monster.com keep up with rapid growth, absorb swings in traffic
volume, achieve nearly 100 percent availability, and quickly integrate
acquisitions – all while maintaining one of the fattest bottom lines on
the Internet.
Challenge:
Keep up with rapid growth and sudden traffic spikes while keeping IT
costs in check. Provide sufficient performance for differentiating features
and enable rapid deployment of new capabilities. Help ensure high
uptime for a mission-critical site with global accessibility.
Solution:
Replace RISC-based servers with Intel architecture-based Dell PowerEdge
servers running the Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system.
Implement SQL Server 2000 for the database and Active Server Pages
and Microsoft Internet Information Server for Web server software.
Benefit:
An all-Dell infrastructure helps deliver the performance needed to handle
approximately 30 million page-views a day, the scalability to handle
sudden traffic spikes, the flexibility to quickly deliver new features, and
the cost-effectiveness to contribute to consistent profitability.
TMP Worldwide is currently testing Windows Server 2003 and
plans to gradually transition all of its sites to the new operating
system. “We want a unified profile for all of the Monster
products and the TMP products and right now they’re on different
platforms,” says Brian Farrey, President of TMP Technologies. “We
want a global login and Windows Server 2003 will help provide
that.” Down the road, as 64-bit applications become more broadly
available, Monster.com will probably deploy Intel Itanium™ two
processor-based servers from Dell. In the meantime, Monster.com
just purchased another $2M worth of Intel Xeon processor-based
Dell PowerEdge servers to keep growing and serving millions of
job seekers and employers around the world.
