Welcome back from the Holiday break. I trust everyone had a safe holiday and enjoyed your family and friends. CHPA at the Zoo was a very successful activity with over 225 faculty, staff and their families participating. This looks like it will become an annual tradition 2017 will be interesting with many changes on the horizon, including assessment and testing of students academic achievement, developing the budget, and academic calendar for 2017-18, hiring for vacant positions for next fiscal year (July 1, 2017 - June 30, 2018), conducting the annual board retreat in June, Athletic contests in wrestling, basketball, softball, and baseball, graduation for the Kindergarteners and Seniors - just to mention a few of the Spring school activities. We also recognize Martin Luther King Day as a celebration of his contributions to our society and a better America. Speaking of America, I also believe we need to Thank President Obama as he leaves the presidency for all of his contributions to our country. Yes, 2017 will be an interesting year as we implement the Educational Master Plan, negotiate a new contract with District 60 (assuming approval of the D60 Board to continue our charter), and prepare for a dynamic/exciting 2017-18. Welcome Back. Richard "Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education" -Martin Luther King Jr.

Happy New Year!!

I would like to wish everyone a blessed and prosperous 2017 and thank you for our support and assistance throughout the first semester. It is difficult transitioning to a new role, new school, and new community, but the DHPH family had made us feel welcomed and appreciated. Mr. Gomez and I would like to express our appreciation and gratitude.

Unfortunately, we had to cancel parent/teacher conferences on Friday, January 6th due to weather, but if you would still like to meet with your child’s advisor, please call us at 583-1030 to set up an after school appointment. Additionally, report cards should go out on Friday, January 13th, and you should receive them shortly after. Mark your calendars for January 26th. We will be asking a group of students to attend the “School of Choice” rally in Denver at the State Capitol. On January 27th, we have tentatively scheduled our Honor Roll ceremony for 7th – 12 grades, and are looking for volunteers for our Middle School Wrestling Tournament hosted by DHPA. This will be on February 11th and all proceeds will go to our Senior Scholarship Dinner.

We have some exciting news from our partners at CSU-Pueblo. We will be offering a Chicano Studies class at DHPH for college credit. Mrs. Victoria Obregon, Doctoral Candidate at CSU-P, will instruct the class after school on Tuesday and Thursday. If your students are looking for electives in which they can earn college credit, we also have Spanish 111 during the day with Mr. Garrett. We have immediate availability in our Folklorico Dance Class with Mrs. Roybal on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursdays. We are also proud to welcome the STARS mentoring program to DHPH. The STARS mentoring program will train juniors and seniors to work with and assist 7th and 8th grade students in academic, behavioral, and social issues. For more information, contact Mr. Segura at DHPH.I am so proud of our students and staff at Dolores Huerta Preparatory School. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact me at 583-1030.

I love taking time during the Holiday Break to reflect upon the wonders of the past year and the excitement of the New Year to come. Watching our CCA students flourish with the guidance of the fabulous teachers is a true blessing. Our parents are also integral partners in this process and we invite you to join us in frequently monitoring your child’s learning.

Here are some ways you can help:• Go through your child’s backpack each night, checking for homework to be completed or important papers/communications to be read.• Review your child’s planner checking for any assignments due orNotes from the teacher.• Read to or with them every day. A high level of independent readingis one of the key indicators of school success plus it is fun!• Talk with your child about the importance of school and getting a solid foundation for learning. The good habits they establish now in elementary school will serve them well for years to come.• Praise them when you read those great stories or see a good grade on their latest assessment. They need validation for the good work they are doing

Greetings From Kindergarten

Kindergarten had a very busy December and January is marching right in line to continue the beat.

In December we learned about Christmas Traditions around the world. We watched the "Nutcracker", listened to the musical score of the 'Nutcracker", and even got to hold a real Nutcracker. We also learned how to spin a Dreidel and where the tradition of the Christmas Tree comes from. What fun we had trying on wooden shoes-yes, that is right wooden shoes. Did you know wooden shoes are placed outside the door of homes with treats for animals and good boys and girls get sweet treats in their shoes the next morning?

Parents, our Kindergarten students are reading! They would love to read their "Shared Story" with you and ask them about their red and green words.

Thank you parents for working with us to accomplish our Parent Teacher Conferences. Even best laid plans can be interrupted by snow, cold, and ice.

We are looking forward to our Valentine's Day Celebration in February and did you know that January 19 is National Popcorn Day. Enjoy some popcorn!

Ms. Tess, from Colorado Springs, knitted hats for all the students in Mrs. Ledeboer's Kindergarten Class. Thank you Ms. Tess

During the holidays the Kindergarten students learned about Holiday Customs around the world. Many students had fun trying to walk in the wooden shoes that are a part of Holland's traditions. Yes they are real wooden shoes.

First grade had a busy month of December, it was over before we knew it.

We were busy completing testing and achievement for the second quarter of the year. The results and information will be shared at Parent/Teacher Conferences.

We had some fun craft activities and got to take part in the Santa Workshop Store. We learned many important concepts in Math, practiced reading skills, learn why animals survive in certain habitats and learned about the Cradle of Civilization. It has been a busy month of learning and fun.

January promises to bring many more fun learning opportunities and parent volunteer opportunities, as well. Thank you for all you have done for our classrooms and the students. We appreciate your support.

First Grade Team

We are excited to be doing so many fun learning activities and we are so happy to have your support as our families.

On December 9th and 10th, Mya Moguez and Jessica Vido had their art work displayed for the Colorado Association of School Boards Annual Convention at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. Art students throughout Colorado are given the opportunity to display their work during the convention. Mya's work is a monochromatic paper weave and Jessica's is a pastel still life.
