Dallas-Fort Worth is the fourth largest metropolitan area in the United States, stretching across 13 counties and dozens of separate municipalities, each with their own processes and systems for traffic management. The inability to share transport data across city lines was making it increasingly difficult to move people and goods through North Central Texas.

To improve collaborative efforts within agencies, and across city limits, four cities in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex chose Ericsson to install and manage an Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) based on our Connected Urban Transport solution. From day one of operation in January 2018, the ATMS has provided positive, measurable results for citizens, and for everyone else traveling through the region.

Key facts & statistics

— The Dallas-Forth Worth Metroplex is the fourth-largest metropolitan area in the United States –behind only New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. (Source: United States Census Bureau).

— Dallas motorists spent 59.4 hours in traffic due to congestion last year which equals 7% of total driving time spent in congestion (Source: INRIX global traffic scorecard).

— For North Texas drivers, the ~60 hours of traffic delays in 2016 cost each driver 40 extra gallons of fuel than would be used in free-flowing traffic.

— Road bottlenecks create 40% of traffic congestion and delays, followed by traffic accidents at 25%, bad weather at 15%, work zones at 10%, poor signal timing at 5% and other causes with 5% (Source: DRMC)

— The system will be fully Functional in 2020.

Connected Urban Transport automates the monitoring, management and maintenance of connected devices and applications in the traffic system. With an easy-to-

use interface for collaborative traffic management, the cities of Dallas, Fort Worth, Irving and Richardson are speeding past their old hold-ups.

While maintaining independent procurement processes and decision-making authority within each agency, the participating cities in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex are optimizing acquisition processes related to transport. Via cooperative purchase agreements, participating municipalities are able to quickly reap the benefits from the common sourcing activity, which adds up to increased value for each tax dollar.

The Connected Urban Transport overlay unifies data across systems, providing authorized users a real-time picture of transport in the Dallas-Fort Worth region. The data generated at street level is routed through each partner’s applications, forming an ecosystem in which everyone has the power to improve processes on both an individual and collaborative level.
