Intelligent water solution software blockage helpVacon’s software package is now
available for NX series ac variable
speed drives. Specifi cally designed
to minimise the incidence of
pump blockages caused by
fouling and to clear any blockages
that do occur without the need
for manual intervention, the new
software provides anti-rag and
automatic fl ushing options, both
of which can be confi gured by
users to match the needs of their
application.
Operating in conjunction with the
PI control software that is a
standard feature of all NX series
drives, the anti-rag feature auto-
matically senses when the pump
is becoming blocked. It then
reverses the pump to clear the
blockage before restoring normal
operation. The user can set the
time for which the pump runs in
reverse and the maximum reverse
torque, which is often higher than
the pump’s normal operating
torque.
The number of anti-rag (reverse/
forward) cycles that the drive will
perform in an attempt to clear a
blockage can also be set. This
procedure is designed to clear a
high proportion of blockages but,
if the preset number of anti-rag
cycles is exceeded and the
blockage is still present, the drive
trips to prevent damage to the
pump.
To assist users in assessing the
benefi ts of using ac variable speed
drive technology, all NX series
drives have the ability to calculate
and display the value of energy
saved compared with fi xed-speed
motor operation.

Grundfos Challenge proceeds to Denmark
Grundfos hosted a fi rst-ever US
competition to give business and
engineering students the
Automatic and precise dosing of ink and sealantVerderfl ex® tube pump aims to
give automatic and precise dosing
of ink and sealant, 24 hours a day
every day at an automotive
industry supplier, Durban-based
Reliable Electrical Services, in
South Africa. There, the pumps
doses 64ml/min consistently at
40 rpm, around the clock.
The process has a direct bearing
on the quality of the fi nished
product as the combination of the
two substances is used to seal
windscreens. It ensures there is no
possibility of moisture ingress
between the two layers of glass
into which a tinted plastic lami-
nate sheet is inserted. Any imbal-
ance in the dosing would weaken
the seal and result in the clarity of
the windscreen being
compromised.
In addition to pigment and glue
dosing, the dosing pumps are
used for coatings and acid transfer
and to feed lapping solution.

control allows the pumps to be
integrated into the automated
windscreen sealing system.
This model of Verderfl ex® tube
pump with brushless dc motor
provides fl ow rates from 0.8 to
1312 ml/min at speeds from 10 to
250 rpm. Speed and fl ow rate are
infi nitely variable and the value of
all adjustable parameters are indi-
cated on a keypad with twin line
alpha numeric display. The pumps
are also stackable, self priming and
can run dry.

opportunity to design solutions for
managing the world’s scarce water
resources.
The Grundfos Challenge took
place 15-16 November at the
company’s facility in Olathe, Kansas
US, while other regional events
occurred simultaneously at
Grundfos facilities in Denmark and
China.
Each team developed a plan to
reduce overall water consumption,
decrease the energy needed to
transport and purify water,
increase the reliability of water
networks, and shrink the cost of
handling and using water.
The students competed against
teams from other universities to
turn theoretical knowledge into a
practical business strategy that
was supported by sound engi-
neering schematics. A test of
talent, ingenuity and teamwork,
the Challenge provided partici-
pants with an important platform
for innovation.
Two business teams and two engi-
neering teams were chosen to
represent the US in a global
competition in Denmark, Grundfos’
home country, in March 2013 for a
weeklong fi nal competition against
their Chinese and Danish
counterparts.
The teams were judged on stra-
tegic focus and technical or busi-
ness acumen by panels of internal
and external experts.
The Challenge began in Bjerringbro,
Denmark in 2006 to highlight the
importance of cooperation
between the business community
and educational institutions.
