Annual Conference Opens May 7 in Naperville

On May 7 & 8, HESNI will return to the NIU Conference Center in Naperville, IL, for their Annual Conference. Facility managers from around the Chicago area and beyond are invited back to update their professional knowledge and polish their skills, gain new contacts and visit old friends. This year’s Conference theme is “Pathway to Success: A Business Survival Guide for the Healthcare Facility Manager.” The goal is to make good facility managers equally great business managers so they may help their organizations survive and thrive down the tough road ahead.

More than a dozen presentations over two days will cover a wide range of topics that will inform and entertain you while also enhancing your skills set. Concurrent one-hour sessions throughout day

1 are scheduled to give you more choices. Plan to be there both days to gain the most new ideas to take back to your healthcare facility.

Each year we fill our exhibit areas with displays from a wide assortment of product manufacturers, construction firms and service providers whose friendly staff are on hand to answer your questions and learn your needs. We plan to add some fun into this year’s exhibition with a contest with prizes. (Watch for more to come about this.)

Take a look at which companies have already signed up as 2015 exhibitors.

Want to enroll your company exhibit? Reserve your spot online today.

When the final class ends on May 7 stick around for the 3:30 p.m. cocktail reception. Enjoy refreshments while you mingle and meet other members and guests. There’s much waiting for you at the 2015 HESNI Annual Conference. We hope you’ll plan to join us both days!

Make your reservation today. Registration costs: Facility Manager Members, $50 (individual) or $80 (group of 2); Professional Affiliate Members, $75; Non-Member Guest, $85. The registration fee includes admission to the Conference (both days), unlimited seminars, trade show exhibits, cocktail reception, breakfast, lunch, and refreshment breaks both days.

Check Out New Group Sites on LinkedIn & Twitter

HESNI’s presence on two popular social media networks — LinkedIn and Twitter — took a huge step forward in February, thanks to the hard work put in by Wendy Peterson, Communications Chair. Wendy spent many hours organizing HESNI groups in both networks, and informing more HESNI members about the new group sites.

She said there are now more than 370 group members on LinkedIn, and 15 followers on Twitter appeared the first week. Several group members were already connected to the LinkedIn group. She has sent numerous invitations to join to other HESNI members, which quickly added more than 40 more to the list.

Wendy will continue to handle administrative duties on both sites, going forward, building viable new ways to promote communication between interested followers and a new source for relative knowledge about better healthcare facility management.

We look forward to even more growth as more members take advantage of this additional opportunity to get connected. If you have not already done so, take a moment to jump to either group site to see what’s going on. You can get there easily if you click on either of the icon links under the “Follow Us” header at www.hesni.org.

March 5 Membership Meeting Has “Energy to Care”

At its 2014 annual conference, ASHE launched Energy to Care, a recently expanded efficiency program that includes energy benchmarking tools and awards for health care facilities. Formerly called the Energy Efficiency Commitment, it allows health care facilities to benchmark their energy use by integrating with the EPA’s Portfolio Manager® program.

At our Thursday, March 5, Membership Meeting at Aramark in Downers Grove, IL, we learned all about the Energy to Care program in detail from Scott Wallace, CEM, LEED AP, Mazzetti & Associates, San Francisco, CA. Scott recenty joined Mazzetti’s San Francisco office where his focus is on explaining the Energy to Care program and encouraging hospitals to adopt its measures and sustainability goals. He outlined each of these to the nearly 100 guests in attendance. Click here to learn more and download Scott’s presentation.

After the afternoon meeting, many members gathered again socially at the Another Round Bar and Grill in Downers Grove. (View meeting photos.)

Getting Ready for the CHC Exam

HESNI hosted the Certified Health Care Constructor (CHC) preparatory seminar, Friday, February 13, at the Aramark Conference Center in Downers Grove, IL. The all-day program covered key topic areas related to the CHC certification exam and presented several sample questions to help participants get ready for the test. (See more photos.)

The actual certification exam was not administered here. However, the morning did begin with a practice exam whose purpose was to help identify areas of study that would be most needed during the day, according to York Chan, CHFM, CHC, Advocate Health Care, one of two instructors for the course. York was joined by Gordon Burrill, FASHE, CHFM, CHC, Teegor Consulting, Inc. Answers to the pre-test questions were gathered and tabulated electronically through the use of individual hand clickers used by attendees. The devices enabled instant feedback and a high level of interactivity — and that enhanced everyone’s learning experience.

This is the first time HESNI had offered the CHC seminar as a benefit to its members. The same program is provided around the country by ASHE. HESNI members were able to access the instruction at a reduced cost and without additional travel expense. Our special thanks go to ASHE, both instructors and to everyone who attended — and good luck with the exam

Half-Fast Cup Race Returns: And the Winner Is…

The new year got off to an especially competitive start with HESNI’s “Half-Fast Cup” indoor race on January 16. It featured another full field of racers with 33 of HESNI’s fastest steering the low-riding electric racecars around turns and twists that would challenge some of NASCAR’s best professionals. For the most part, cars were bumper-to-bumper tight as they flew full speed around the track. Spectators witnessed lots of close misses — and at least one loud crash. Everyone survived, we’re happy to report, and had as much fun as ever in this year’s competition. When it was over, the 65 spectators and racers gathered in the lounge area outside the track for a buffet dinner, refreshments and the presentation of winners and awards.

Congratulation to our top three finalists: (1st Place) Joseph Parrilli, (2nd Place) Ed Harding, and (3rd Place) Tim Shanahan (bottom right photo). This year we expanded the prizes and introduced finalists in other competitions leading to the final round. Their names appear below. (See photos of the indoor race.)

As usual, the K1 Track’s staff closely moderated the races and electronically monitored each racer’s performance. Printed reports offered data that will help everyone to run a little faster next year. Good luck to all and thanks for playing. A special thanks go Tim and Vince Shanahan, who arranged our outing, and also to Allen Metcalfe and F.E. Moran Fire Protection, which sponsored refreshments for the Indoor Race.

CHSP Prep Workshop & Certification Exam Set for April

HESNI’s next two-day workshop to prepare facility managers to take the exam for Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP) will take place Thursday, April 9, and Friday, April 10, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., at the Aramark Auditorium, 2300 Warrenville Rd., in Downers Grove, IL. The workshop cost is $25.00 for HESNI members and $100.00 or non-members and will cover the instruction, handout material and continental breakfast, lunch and refreshment breaks both days. You don’t have to be a HESNI member to attend, so tell others at your hospital about it. Non-member healthcare facility management personnel can join HESNI online to avoid the higher non-member seminar cost (there’s no fee to join).

Participants who take the exam, which will be held on Friday afternoon, will have to pay an additional application fee and exam-processing fee. Online registration is available at hesni.org. Register today. For questions or more information, contact [email protected] or the HESNI office at 708.636.5819.

August 31 Golf Outing Moves to Double-Round Format

There are two changes to this year’s annual Golf Outing we’d like you to know about. First, the date has been shifted back from early to late summer. This year’s outing will take place on Monday, August 31st (please mark your calendar) at the Ivanhoe Golf Club in Mundelein, IL. Secondly, to accommodate an ever-growing number of golfers we are switching from a single-round to a double-round of golf format. A morning session will tee off at 7 a.m. After lunch the second round of 18 holes will get underway. Finally, the dinner banquet will be moved to a noon luncheon so that all golfers may attend without having to wait.

As always, golf times will be assigned beforehand based upon the order of registration date. As HESNI corporate sponsorship plans include golf foursome reservations, preference will be given to our sponsors. For additional information, visit www.hesni.org. Click here for information about HESNI’s corporate sponsorship plans.
