The Barna Research Study By Pastor Elliot Smith

The leadership of our church has begun a journey of prayer, study and discussions to examine where we are as a churchfamily (looking at our strengths and opportunities for growth) and what God is calling us to be in the next 5-10 years.

As part of this process, we have contracted with the Barna Group (Barna.org) to assist us in asking our 'Millennial'generation (ages 15-35) how this church is assisting in their spiritual life. The purpose of the survey is to gauge oureffectiveness at ministering to this demographic and to explore areas of interest/questions this group has for the church.

The first diagnostic survey was made available in April, and a diagnostic survey for those OVER the age of 35 will bedistributed in May. Three more surveys will be given to those in the Millennial age group before the end of 2014.

If you are in the Millennial bracket and would like access to the surveys, you may pick them up at the church throughthe end of April or access it online (site info is on the Young Adult Facebook page). We will provide the results of thesesurveys as they become available.

If you are interested in the work Barna has done on a national level looking at the Millennial generation, please visittheir website and/or read David Kinnaman's book, "You Lost Me". These resources will open your eyes to thechallenges and opportunities we have in reaching this generation.

Tuesday morning, April 15, ourFellowship Hall was filled with tablesthat had been set up the night beforeand filled with empty Easter baskets. By8 o'clock, eighty-eight student nursesfrom Kettering College and a dozenKettering Church and Kettering Collegefaculty volunteers appeared, eagerly

awaiting their instructions for stuffing the Easter baskets.

With a flurry of cheerful activity, 372 Easter baskets (thelargest total ever) were assembled, each containing achocolate bunny, a homemade colorful pillowcase, activitybook, snacks, toys, a Little Friend, socks, jelly beans, toothbrush and paste, a reading book and stuffed animal. Theywere carefully wrapped, attached with a pretty Easter card and loaded onto the semi truck. In addition to the Easterbaskets, personal care bags were stuffed for mothers. That afternoon a handful of ladies followed the delivery truckdriven by Lloyd Davis and guided by Pastor Dan to seven community agencies: the Artemis House, Daybreak, Erma’sPlace, House of Bread, Kettering Behavioral Medicine Center, St. Vincent’s and the YWCA.

A heartfelt "Thank You" to all who donated toward thisspecial project without whom it would not be a success: toSheryl Bullman and her sewing circle who made thepillowcases, to Dr. Mark Wenzel for the toothbrushes andpaste, to Lorraine Beaven for chocolate bunnies, applesauce and fish crackers, to the Lee family for support,to Kettering Health Network for the loan of Lloyd and thetruck to make delivery quick and easy, to KMCdepartments and staffers, especially the lab and EPIC teamfor their help, and most importantly to Richa Stevens andJoan Ulloth for leading out in this mission service.

With such a large need this year for baskets, almost all thesupplies were used up. There is a huge need for basketsand wrap for next year

Annual Easter BasketProject Project

A Book Review by Barbara Guenterberg

The Prodigal by Brennan Manning

This book is a loosely based retelling of the parable of the prodigal. It has the powerful messagesof grace and forgiveness that the original parable has. I found it an excellent read and very hardto put down. It's based on Pastor Jack Chisholm who is the head pastor of a mega church, and he makes aterrible mistake while out of town. His church finds out and quickly removes him from thechurch. He is shunned by his wife and has long been estranged from his father and siblings. His father however, reaches out to him in his time of need and the book follows the path to graceand forgiveness.
