Description:
Our project in Rajasthan covers 75 rural government schools and benefits almost 5000 girl students in the districts of Udaipur and Barmer. We ran awareness and sensitisation workshops with teachers and students emphasising child rights and the need for girls' education. Given that Rajasthan is notorious for discrimination against women and girls, what with high rates of female foeticide, child-marriage, high drop-out rates, low immunisation rates among girl children and even nutritional discrimination when it comes to girl children, our focus was on an inclusive approach that would increase the safety of girls as well as decrease household expenditure. By provisioning girl students with inexpensive battery operated LED lights, we empowered them not only to study under bright illumination, rather than dim kerosene lamps, in their own time in the evenings after they had completed their chores, we were also providing them with a personal asset that they could use to keep themselves safe.YOU can also help girls acquire the education they need to achieve their dreams through small interventions and acts of everyday heroism by changing the attitude of your community toward girls’ education, marriage and childbearing. 1. Project Description

Eveready Industries Limited has supported 5,000 girl children under En-Light a Girl Child in the state of

Rajasthan as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. Eveready is the support

agency and product partner in the initiative.

SoulAce is implementing En-light a Girl Child project in power impoverished Udaipur and Barmer

districts of Rajasthan.

The project aims to empower 5,000 girl children in these regions by creating positive discrimination for

girl child, replacing their only/main source of lighting i.e. kerosene lamps with bright LED Lights for

promoting education and creating awareness on Girl Child Rights, Constitutional Acts and State &

Central Government schemes.

The implementation of the project was carried out in the months of February & March 2014 in the two

districts. Project monitoring at the school & household level will be undertaken in the coming months.

Development challenges in the districts

The project is being implemented in the districts of Udaipur & Barmer both of which face severe

topographical challenges resulting into slow pace of development of the regions.

Udaipur district is situated over Aravalli hills in the Southeastern part of Rajasthan. Jhadol & Girwa

blocks in Udaipur district is characterized by undulating uplands with high slopes carved out into

separate barren hillocks and valleys where villages are scattered in small hamlets. Barmer district is part

of Thar Desert (also known as the Great Indian Desert). The topography of the Thar Desert is distinctly

marked with sand dunes & undulating plains.

Both the regions are remote & backward. Mobility is a major bottleneck and development has been

limited.

As far as education is concerned, there is still lack of awareness & opportunities among the rural

community. Dropout rates are very high especially among girl children. The issue of discrimination

Page 4: Interim Progress Report: En-light a Girl Child in Action in Rajasthan

between males and females is very common. Although there are primary schools in villages, enrollment

of girls is very low owing to ignorance of parents and societal pressures.

The extent of girl child rights violations that occur in these regions is no hidden matter. This violation

occurs at different levels and has several dimensions like child sex ratio, high girl child mortality rate

(IMR), the immunization status, nutritional status, educational status, enrollment & drop-out rates,

female foeticide, gender discrimination, child marriage, child labour, purdah system, sexual abuse of

women to mention a few.

3. Project Outcomes

1. Enabling Education

The girls along with her siblings can now

regularly use the LED lights to study in the

evening. Their motivation to study will

increase because of the bright light. The

lights prove to be of immense help for the

girls appearing for the 10th

grade board exam

as they have to put extra hours of studies in

the late evening/night.

I spite of the fact that girls educatio i the region is riddled with multiple limiting

factors, the provision of personal LED Lights

prove to be a huge source of encouragement

and increases the achievement motivation of

the benefitting girl children.

2. Safety of Girls & Women

Safety of girls & women is increased as they now use the LED lights whenever they go out in the

evening. As majority of the households do not have toilets, the girls & women use the lights after

sundown.

3. Increase in Savings

The families will be saving close to Rs. 50 per month (approx. 600/yr). The savings will be utilized in

meeting primary needs like food, health care, housing etc.

4. Empowerment of Girl Children

Girls being the beneficiaries, the programme has

created positive discrimination for girl children in the

villages. The provision of LED Lights has sent out a

strong message to the rural families, schools and

community, establishing the importance of girl child

education.

The Booklet on Girl Child Rights aimed at creating

awareness about Girl Child Issues has increased the

co u ity s knowhow. The girls are now aware of their

rights, Constitutional Acts against evil practices like child

marriage, dowry, female foeticide, child labour, child

sexual abuse etc. The information on Central & State Government schemes for girl children in the

booklet is being used to apply for the relevant schemes and avail the benefits.

Page 9: Interim Progress Report: En-light a Girl Child in Action in Rajasthan

5. Creating a Positive Environment for the Girl Child

Puppet shows were organized on stories revolving girl child rights, atrocities committed against them,

awareness on constitutional provisions to protect the rights of the girl child and our role towards

creating a positive environment for all round development of the girl children.

Pledge ceremonies were conducted in each school in which all students & teachers/staff of the schools

took pledge to protect the rights of the girl children. This has created a positive environment for the girl

children.
