FOG HotelTexas TEch University, ID Cad II 4383fall 2011

Proposal for a high end boutique, contemporary style hotel located in Lub-bock, Texas.

I was inspired by the consistency and shape of fog as it drops down to touch the ground creating a horizontal form. I created a hotel that incorporated materials that were frosted, reflective, and shades of grey. To represent fog’s horizontal shape, cantilevered bars, seating, and tables seem “legless” and floating. An open floor plan in the guest’s rooms creates a sense of flow from space to space. Overall, the FOG hotel is a place of retreat for guests.

In this semester long group project, I worked with an architect, Brandon Montfort, two landscape architects, Jared Chase and Sam Caskey, and two fellow interior design students, Megan Kozlowski and Morgan Stautzen-berger. Together, we all tackled an existing firehouse site in Boston, MA. There were four phases to this project: concept, preliminary, schematic, and final. In the first concept phase, my group researched and observed the shape, color, and growth of a flame. We charted our research and designed a physical model that served as our constand inspiration for the duration of the project. In the second phase of preliminary, my group began mapping the site and analyzing where new construction and green space should go. In addition, bubble diagrams and interior organization began.CONTINUED ON PG. 5 & 6

In the third schematic phase, my group and I made hard decisions about the existing site and began to develop our new construction structure. Blending the old firehouse and the new constuction was key. As interior designers, we fully designed the firehouse with architectural features, produced final floor plans, and selected furniture and color schemes. In the final phase, the group put all the pieces together.The landscape architects designed all outdoor spaces that included a fire sculpture, outdoor seating, and an ampitheatre. The architect produced three multi-level stunning new buildings that flowed into the old firehouse. The data from the flame was replicated on the exterior of the new construction. My fellow interior designers and I created all new de-signs for the new construction that followed any presets created by the flame data. Multiple floor plans, furniture and fabric selections, architectural features, and lighting created a full package in the final produced by the interior depart-ment. I learned a lot as a designer working with other disiplines. Collaboration will certainly give me an advantage in the future.

Proposal for the renovation of the Dean and Department Chair’s suites in the College of Human Sciences of Texas Tech University.

In this semester long project, I took my designs through the phases of programming, schematic design, design development, and open plan. Programming phase included interviewing the cli-ent and creating a document with the needs, wants, and goals of the renovation. The schematic phase involved analyzing sunlight, traffic patterns, block and bubble digramming, and column place-ment. In the design development phase, I established architec-tural features, floor plans, room layouts, and furniture specifica-tions. I produced hand rendered floor plans and perspectives representing my concept. In the open plan phase, I took out all interior walls and created new room layouts. This open floor plan concept allowed faculty to rearrange freely for a more contempo-rary looking office.

[LEFT] In this class, I was paired with an architecture student. We worked together to develop an exterior enterance into a building. We investigated how masonry, concrete, and screen walls are connected, developed, and designed. My partner and I worked together to create a building with a slate stacked wall with a metal grid backup, poured concrete wall, floating wood slat wall with metal cross bracing, rebble-trench foundation, and a metal framed window.

[BELOW] Also in this class, I prepared four different details that explained my partner and mine’s exterior enterance. I created close-up drawings for the masonry wall, screen wall, stud joist flooring system, and ground flooring system.

In this project, I wanted to try things I had never tried before. My design theme centered around long horizontal and vertical wood beams. This con-tinuous motion is seen in the entrance, on the ceiling, and on the back win-dows. When these beams were spaced instead of side-by-side, it created a gap that was perfect for glass shelving in the bar. The pop in the space is the blue terrazzo flooring made of broken pieces of SKYY Vodka bottles. The flooring was a nice sustainability option. This material is smooth and makes it easy for consumers to roll their suitcases over. Overall, I needed to develop a space that was easy and accessible for busy business people who would be filling it.

The space demanded seating for a lot of people at one time. So by in-corporating banquet seating around the entire perimeter, smaller lounge seating for intimate groupings, and bar seating allowed many people to occupy the space at one time. In addition, small and portable tables scattered throughout the lounge allowed the very busy client to multi-task while waiting for their flight.

In this final project, I was assigned the designers and architects Greene & Greene as a style I had to follow. In this design, I had to recreate these brother’s Craftsman-style design. This style was a challenge but extremely interesting to replicate. I began researching the brothers. I discovered how their firm operated, their design style, and who their design influences were. Through wainscoting, stained glass, oriental rungs, coffered ceilings, and all Arts & Crafts furniture, I was able to develop a space representing the Greene & Greene Gamble House in California.
