LYSAGHT INTERLOK® IILYSAGHT INTERLOK® II steel grating combines the strength and light weight of steel with the corrosion protection of galvanizing to provide a long-life, slip resistant deck.

SIMPLY LOCKS TOGETHER

The rollformed continuous legs allow INTERLOK® II planks to be positively located along their full length on assembly. Welding is not necessary, however crimping of the mating legs is desirable over long spans or in unusual conditions such as cyclonic areas or where vibration may occur. Crimping is a simple operation with the INTERLOK® II Crimping Tool. Should bolting become necessary, this too is easy using INTERLOK® II J Bolts.

INTERLOK® II grating is available in two profiles, two thicknesses and two surfaces, and is nominally 225mm wide.

The MF (male/female) profile is used for most applications, as the male and female legs are designed to inter-lock adjacent lengths of grating. The DM (double male) profile is used for stair treads and as a closer to provide a neat finished edge to an INTERLOK® II platform or walkway.

INTERLOK® II Regular has a surface of stiffened transverse ribs and is ideally suited for general access and any non-hazardous application where the decking cannot become slippery due to oil, water, etc. This includes such applications as mezzanine floors, shelving in high density storage systems and interior walkways and platforms.

INTERLOK® II Anti-skid has teeth formed in the transverse ribs in a special pattern which provides extra grip in all directions. These teeth ensure added safety when oil, grease, water, sap, mud, etc may make the grating slippery. Tests with a number of shoe sole materials have shown that INTERLOK® II Anti-skid provides excellent grip in most hazardous conditions.

The surface of INTERLOK® II grating is self draining and, because of the size of the slot, easily cleaned of mud, dirt or grease. This slot also allows the free passage of water, air and light. In addition, where circulation of air or other ventilation is necessary, INTERLOK® II grating is the ideal material.

INTERLOK® II grating meets the requirements of AS 1657, ‘Fixed Platforms, Walkways, Stairways and Ladders’.

INTERLOK RAMPS

LYSAGHT INTERLOK® II is also suitable for use on sloped walkways or ramps constructed in accordance with AS 1657.

Not only is INTERLOK® II grating easy to assemble, its light weight also makes it easy to handle on site. Stock lengths of six metres are readily carried and placed by one man. When necessary, INTERLOK® II can also be simply dismantled and reassembled.

Ramps up to 7° slope may be decked with INTERLOK® II Regular.

INTERLOK® II Anti-skid may be used where cleated ramps are normally required, i.e. up to 20° slope. However, to ensure adequate grip across full width of such ramps, the grating must be laid transverse to the direction of travel.

MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS

INTERLOK® II is made from zincformI steel conforming to AS 1397 - Zinc-coated and Aluminium/Zinc-coated Steel Sheet, Grade G300–Z450 (300 MPa minimum yield stress).

Note: All accessories have a coating mass of Z275. Where used in extremely aggressive environments, a thicker coating mass should be considered (subject to enquiry).

INTERLOK® II IN MODULAR STORAGE SYSTEMSLYSAGHT INTERLOK® II Regular is the ideal alternative to timber decking in modular rack storage systems.

Designed to safely support heavy loads economically, INTERLOK® II grating, supplied custom-cut to size, fits into support members accurately and easily – usually without the need for special tools or hardware.

The slots in INTERLOK® II grating provide 29% open area to allow the passage of air, water, gases and light through the storage system, making it suitable for use in cold stores, stores where special atmospheres are used, as well as general stores.

If there is a need to increase the open area of the shelving system, INTERLOK® II DM sections can be used with an appropriate space left between them.

In short, an INTERLOK® II modular storage system has the following advantages:

• Maximum durability

• Minimal maintenance

• Non-combustible

• It cannot chip or splinter

• It is lightweight, easy to handle, and economical to transport

• It permits efficient ventilation

• It allows water from sprinkler systems to flow through

• It remains stable under changes in climate

INTERLOK® II STAIR TREADS

INTERLOK® II Stair Treads offer all the advantages of INTERLOK® II grating including quick and easy installation. They are ideal for use in new installations, or as replacements when rebuilding. The Anti-skid grating provides a slip-resistant surface, even when wet or oily.

INTERLOK® II Stair Treads are strong, durable, corrosion-resistant, virtually self-cleaning and maintenance free.

Stair Treads are fabricated from INTERLOK® II Anti-skid grating with carrier plates and, where applicable, floor plate nosings which have been galvanized before assembly. Coating damage around the welds is cleaned and the area retouched with a zinc-rich paint. If required, stair treads not dipped galvanized after fabrication are available on special order. Stair treads made from INTERLOK® II Regular are also available on special order.

INSTALLATION & SPECIFICATIONSINSTALLATION

INTERLOK® II grating installations should be planned so as to use long lengths over multiple spans wherever possible. With multiple span installations, deflection is lower than simple spans for the same applied load and installation is quicker. End joints may be staggered to give a smoother overall surface. A combination of MF and DM sections should be used to ensure that the outside leg of all areas is a male leg.

To prevent relative movement between INTERLOK® II sections under load, and to make them work together as a continuous platform, 1.2mm thick INTERLOK® II should be crimped at mid span for spans in excess of 1500mm, and 2.0mm thick crimped at spans in excess of 1800mm. On longer spans, additional crimping may be desirable.

Crimping is quick and easy with the INTERLOK® II Crimping Tool. This tool is simply placed through the slots in the grating from above, clamped around the legs and operated to crimp the return lips on the leg sections together. The INTERLOK® II Crimping Tool is available from BlueScope Lysaght Distributors.

INTERLOK® II grating is readily cut on site with a hacksaw or power saw. When obstructions such as pipes, cable ducts, etc. are encountered, the grating is normally laid up to the obstruction and cut around as required. Adjacent lengths of INTERLOK® II grating should be joined together around cut-outs so as to ensure adequate distribution of the applied loads.

For internal applications, it is not always necessary to attach INTERLOK® II grating to the support structure. However, in installations where wind or vibration must be considered, the grating should be adequately fixed to the supports using the INTERLOK® II J Bolt or Hold Down Clip.

IMPORTANT NOTE

When using INTERLOK® II in a rural flooring application or where temperature variations are high, it is recommended that allowance be made for expansion. This would involve a 100mm gap left for every 20 sheet widths of flooring. It is also recommended that in rural flooring the floor be thoroughly hosed down about three times a week to prevent accumulation of waste matter in the side laps.

COMPATIBILITY

INTERLOK® II grating should be installed on gavlanized or painted supports. If INTERLOK® II is welded, the coating damage around the welds should be cleaned and retouched with zinc-rich paint.

PERFORMANCE

INTERLOK® II sections are accurately rollformed to close dimensional tolerances and the load capacities have been established by testing. Sections chosen using data contained herein will perform as specified when the design and installation are carried out in accordance with the recommendations set out in this publication and with accepted building practice.

PACKING

INTERLOK® II grating is normally supplied in strapped bundles of 20 lengths.

HANDLING AND STORAGE

Bundles of INTERLOK® II should not be allowed to get wet. If not required for immediate use, the bundles should be stacked clear of the ground and, if left in the open, protected by waterproof covers. Moisture trapped beneath panels may cause unsightly water staining and detract from the finished appearance.

Care must be taken when handling long length bundles. When lifting, a suitable beam should be used. The beam should have several lifting points and carefully located slings.

For personal safety, sections should only be handled using clean, dry gloves.

LENGTHS

Stock length is 6 metres (6073mm). However, custom-cut lengths from 0.5 m to 12 m are available on order, with lead times subject to production schedules.

As INTERLOK® II is cut at every fourth rib, actually lengths must be multiples of 152.8mm.

The minimum custom-cut length is 5309mm and maximum is 12033mm (see table).

Lengths required less than 5309mm can be supplied on a cut back basis and will incur a cutting charge per length. Cut back lengths are in slot spacing increments of 38.2mm.

TOLERANCES

The following tolerances apply to LYSAGHT INTERLOK® II sections:

Depth: ±1mm

Width: +0-2mm

Length: (less than 3 m) +0-4mm (over 3 m) +0-6mm

LOAD TABLES

The allowable load tables provide the safe working load, the deflection produced by the load and the load which will produce a deflection of span/360 for uniformly distributed, concentrated line and point loads.

A line load must extend across the full width of the section so that it is applied to both legs.

A point load is assumed to be applied at the mid point of a single rib. If the load is applied over more than one rib, the allowable load may be increased by the number of ribs until the limits of the concentrated line load is reached.

Deflection limits of span/360 are suitable for most INTERLOK® II applications. At the discretion of the designer, other loads and deflections up to the safe working load may be obtained by proportion.

Irrespective of the design loads involved, INTERLOK® II grating subject to heavy and continuous foot traffic, such as stairways, should be 2.0mm thick.

AS 1657 requires that the grating adequately carry the more severe of 2.5 kPa uniformly distributed, or 1kN concentrated load. With deflection limited to span/360, maximum recommended spans are:

G06512 1900mm

G06520 2400mm

STANDARD SPECIFICATION

The grating shall be INTERLOK® II manufactured by BlueScope Lysaght.

Grating shall be provided in areas detailed on the drawings and shall be supplied in individual units 224mm wide. Grating shall be in 6 m lengths, except those areas requiring custom-cut lengths within the standard LYSAGHT range.

Grating shall interlock with male/female legs, providing a friction lock so that no horizontal movement between units can occur. The outside leg of all areas shall be a male leg.

Grating shall be manufactured from zincformI steel strip conforming to AS 1397-G300-Z275 (300 MPa minimum yield stress, 275g/mI coating mass).

The surface shall provide at least 29% open area. Openings shall be 186mm long and approximately 14mm wide when measured at 90° to the long dimension.

The grating shall be made from 1.2 or 2.0mm base thickness steel. The grating height shall be nominally 65mm. The grating shall be capable of carrying a uniform distribution load of ... kPa and a concentrated load of ... kN (see load table). The surface shall be ... (Anti-skid or Regular).

The Anti-skid surface, where specified, shall provide 360° positive traction and be formed by tapered, self-cleaning teeth, approximately 1.5mm high. These teeth shall have slots approximately 1mm wide x 10mm long and be uniformly spaced with approximately 800 teeth per mI.
