CYCLE NEWS

CYCLE 65 In Language Arts cycle 65 has just taken the quarterly. What we learned this past quarter has really

helped them. On their quarterly, the students had a choice to write persuasive, five paragraph essays.

While taking the quarterly they followed the rubric on how to write a persuasive. We have also

learned the forms of poetry. Mrs. Adams taught the students all the vocabulary words of poetry. She

hopes that the students apply what they learned in the next marking period.

In the days to come, cycle 65 will be doing biographies on people who changed history. It could range

from now to ancient times. The students will research and present their person to the class. This way

the students will learn a variety of different people in a fun way! By the end of this project the

student’s will know many famous people and maybe learn something new. The students can’t wait to

see how it will go! Victoria Glenn

In Math, cycle 65 has just completed a project based on the reconstruction of the Seaside Boardwalk.

Students read an article that gave them the ratio of pilings and blocks which they used to figure out

various problems including how long construction should take to the amount of materials needed to

complete the project. Overall, the projects that were turned in far exceeded Mr. Rose’s expectations

and impressed everyone who saw them. This was a great success…well done cycle 65!

In Science, our students became biologists, botanists and physicists and are on their way to becoming

astronomers!

First, the students learned about diatoms and created colorful stained glass diatoms that are displayed

though out the classroom. Then they became botanists when they were able to distinguish the

difference between a monocot and dicot plants by completing a bean lab and a flower lab.

Next, the students became physicists and played with slinkys and ropes to create longitudinal waves

and transverse waves. Students made music with colored water in Erlenmeyer flasks and learned how

sound travels into the ear. The JELL-O Diffraction lab was fun when the students used red laser to see

how light bends in JELL-O. The Electromagnetic Song was very popular as the students sang and

learned about radio waves, microwaves, infrared radiation, visible light, ultraviolet, x-rays and gamma

rays. In addition to, the students learned how their eyes can see images and the students created Braille

name plates of their own names. Soon, the students will explore space and become astronomers.

Lastly, creative children’s books on famous women scientists will be proudly presented and displayed

by the students. Mrs. Boney is very proud of her cycle 65. Keep up the great work! Science rules!

CYCLE 66

Cycle 66 has had a creative and busy year so far! In Language Arts we made “Wordles” and filled

them with adjectives that described “What Makes Me, Me”. In December we worked on “Winter

Reflections” with Ms. Domzalski and attached them to beautiful pictures of trees reflecting in a lake

that Mrs. Kiraly helped us make. Social Studies has taken us back in time and we just left ancient

Egypt where we worked on creative “Perfect 10” projects that explain what life was like way back

then.

In Math, Mrs. Sabatino is reviewing area and perimeter of shapes with us and we are working hard on

our daily “Math Minutes” to keep our minds sharp. Soon we will blast off into outer space in Science

class to explore the Solar System.

CYCLE 71

CYCLE 71 is the proud winner of March of Dimes Fundraiser. Thanks to all of our students for their

participation and for the support we received from our cycle parents!

In Math, Cycle 71 has been working hard to take the information we learn in class and create some

awesome projects! It is great to see our learning come to life through our class number line, Integer

Rap, and Frankenstein graph! Most recently the students created a WUMP family project practicing

our skills with scale factor, and they look great. Ms. Johnson is so proud of the student's dedication

and creativity with their tessellations and comic strips. Cycle 71 is getting ready to tackle the NJ Ask

and never ceases to bring individuality and creativity to math.

In Social Studies, our students have strolled through history starting with the Middle Ages. The kids

have learned how to write a research papers based on information and research of the The Middle

Ages or Medieval period which lasted from the 5th until the 15th centuries. Students then learned

about the Age of Enlightenment of the17th and 18th centuries. They created lyrics to match our

enlightenment thinkers’ ideas; great minds of people such as John Locke, Voltaire, Rousseau, and

many others were the primary resources for our project. We also simulated an assembly line worker’s

life from the Industrial Revolution. Our students were able to demonstrate their knowledge in many

fun and imaginative ways.

We can also proudly claim that these children know the happenings locally and globally of our time;

current events are a major focus of our class all year round. Keeping informed will become a habit that

will last these future leaders throughout their lives as they will grow into informed and discerning

adults.

Most recently, we were very lucky to have had Rose Laiter, Holocaust survivor and speaker, address

our cycle. She was able to bring a perspective which children these days don’t always understand until

it touches them. Mrs. Laiter’s open and heartfelt discussion was once in lifetime opportunity for our

students! Who knew so much history could come to life right in A102.

In Science, our students have already learned about physics and machines . . . we built rubber band

cars! Would you believe we had a car go over 33 feet! We also learned about delicious thermal energy.

Yes delicious…we made popcorn and rice crispy treats to illustrate the different types of thermal

energy! Did you ever imagine science could be so appetizing? There’s even more! Our students

experienced a frog dissection. These students make it so much fun to learn through applied activities.

We just finished studying earthquakes and volcanoes and now are learning all about rocks. Don’t be

surprised if you see students walk around with their pet rock. We can’t wait to see what they are going

to look like. Dr. Piznik is so proud of all her students!

In Language Arts . . . we will be expanding our reading curriculum by reading some great young

adult literature. Stories like Stormbreaker and Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie will be keeping our

interests piqued, and allowing us to vicariously experience a tremendous amount of situations and

places. Themes such as friendship and good over evil will be discussed. Reading not only builds our

knowledge but expands our empathy for others in our community and world. We will continue with

more realistic fiction towards the end of the year with the greatly anticipated reading of The Outsiders.

Sixty years after being published by a 15 year old girl, this novel is still timely with its insights into the

harms of stereotyping. The students will be enjoying the action and ideas presented in this literary

classic while discussing elements of literature, and learning new concepts.

Even before this, the kids will have to share a little bit of their likes as the students prepare a

presentation using one of their favorite songs to analyze poetic devices, sounds and tone. As we move

along, we will look at the nonsensical poetry of Lewis Carroll, the all encompassing Walt Whitman as

well as Langston Hughes, Shel Silverstein and more. The students will ultimately be creating their

own works of art made entirely of words!

Some of the classes are working on a theme based unit that includes poetry, fables, drama, short

stories and more! Learning “to do the right thing” is a theme that threads its way through all the pieces

of literature. Character traits such as trustworthiness, fairness, and responsibility are demonstrated and

modeled in the characters. Students were able to identify with and understand repercussions of

negative actions and negative character traits, as well as cheering on our literary heroes for their good

deeds!

These kids are awesome!! Thanks to all my students for making my job so much fun!

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

-Nelson Mandela

CYCLE 73

In Science with Mrs. Guidera, cycle 73 has been learning about earthquakes, volcanoes, and rocks. We

made explosive volcanoes, and practiced our earthquake knowledge with tectonic karate. We are now

finishing our earth science quarter by creating pet rocks and writing stories detailing their adventures

through the rock cycle.

In Mr. Arminio's Social Studies class the students are learning about the Cold War and the world

today. The students are also working on how to properly respond to quotes in preparation for the NJ

ASK test.

Mrs. Bates’ Language Arts classes just completed reading the novel The Outsiders. Students enjoyed

reading about the greasers and the Socs. The cycle ended their unit on the novel with an “Outsiders

Day” where students were able to dress up as their favorite character from the book and enjoy

chocolate cake (a greaser favorite) while watching the film adaptation of the book. Cycle 73 will begin

gearing up for the NJ ASK by participating in the Rocket Race to the Top Challenge!

Mr. Pagano's Math classes have all finished up with our book, Stretching and Shrinking. The students

loved working with the Wump family and their imposters. Cycles 731 and 732 also had extra credit

projects where they created their own characters on coordinate graphs, wrote fictional biographies, and

changed them into new characters using rules and scale factors.

NJ MATH LEAGUE CONTEST

The NJ Math League Contest was held at Intermediate East on February 19th, 2013. Students from
