President and 7 new Executive Committee members. A

slate of 8 candidates has been come up with for the

positions of 2019-2021. The Executive Committee has

approved all of these candidates who are nominated

and seconded by members of the Nomination

Committee. We are including a slate of nominees for

your consideration, along with brief biographical

sketches for each of them. If you wish to nominate

Nominees’ Biographical Sketches

Candidate for the Vice President Position

Takashi Takekoshi 竹越孝 is Professor

in Department of Chinese Studies, at Kobe

City University of Foreign Studies. Prof.

Takekoshi received his M.A. from Tokyo

Metropolitan University in 1992. Before

joining Kobe CUFS as an Associate Professor

in April 2010, he was Associate Professor

teaching Chinese linguistics in Aichi

Prefectural University (2003-2010) and

Kagoshima University (1997-2003). Prof.

Takekoshi’s research interests lie primarily in

Chinese historical syntax, with a special focus

on materials outside of China, such as Korean-

Chinese translation textbooks in Joseon

dynasty, The Secret History of Mongols,

Huayiyiyu, and Manchu-Chinese translation

textbooks in Qing dynasty. He has published

or co-edited 20 books --- such as A Study of

Xiangyuantiyu (Hakkobang, 2011), Contrast

Book of Tanggū Meyen and Qingwen Zhiyao I,

II (Monograph Series in Foreign Studies Vol.

60, 61, Kobe City University of Foreign

Studies, 2017-18), Manhan Chengyu Duidai

(Peking University Press, 2018) --- and

research papers in edited books, conference

proceedings and journals such as Chugoku

Gogaku (Bulletin of the Chinese Linguistic

Society of Japan), Yuyanxue Luncong (Essays

on Linguistics), Hanyushi Xuebao (Journal of

Chinese Language History), Lishiyuyanxue

Yanjiu (Journal of Historical Linguistics), and

Minzu Yuwen (Minority languages of China).

His service to the field includes

refereeing for conferences and for various

journals such as Chugoku Gogaku,

Chugokugo Kenyu, Yuyanxue Luncong, etc.

He was elected to the Executive Committee of

IACL (2015-2017). He now serves as the

Chairperson of the Editorial Committee and a

member of the Executive Committee in the

Chinese Linguistic Society of Japan (2016-

2020).

Candidates for the Positions of the Executive Committee

Joël Bellassen 白樂 桑 is currently

member of the PLIDAM research team at

INALCO (France) and supervisor of Master

and PhD students in the field of Chinese

Language and Writing Teaching. He is

President of the European Society for Chinese

Language Teaching, President of the French

Society for Chinese Language Teaching and

Vice President of the International Society for

Chinese Language Teaching. He was

Professor of Chinese at Institut National des

Langues et Civilisations Orientales (INALCO)

and first Inspector General in the field of

Chinese Language Teaching at the Ministry of

Education in France. He was the editor for the

first Chinese teaching syllabus for secondary

schools in French Minister of Education and

has published about forty monographs as well

as more than 90 academic articles. His

publications cover the fields of didactics of

Chinese language and writing, language

policy and the history of Chinese teaching

from an epistemological point of view. During

these last years, he has developed a MOOC for

Chinese Beginners at INALCO. His activities

in the field includes refereeing for conferences

and for most part of academic journals in the

field of Teaching Chinese as a Second

Language.

Chengzhi Chu 儲誠志 is Associate

Professor and Coordinator of the Chinese

Language Program at the University of

California, Davis, where he also serves on the

Graduate Faculty of Linguistics. He is the

former President of the Chinese Language

Teachers Association, USA, and Guest

Professor or Honorable Professor of other four

universities. Chu received his Ph.D. in

Chinese linguistics from the University of

Hawaii. He had taught at Stanford University

and the Beijing Language and Culture

University for many years before joining UC

Davis. He has published widely in Chinese

linguistics (grammar, lexicon, writing system,

and dialect), cognitive semantics, corpus

linguistics, Chinese L2 pedagogy, application

of technology in Chinese teaching, and

intercultural communication. He is the PI of

the Corpus of Chinese Interlanguage (1995,

Beijing Language and Culture University) and

ChineseTA (2004, Stanford University), the

designer and primary author of the large

Chinese Breeze graded reader series (2007--,

Peking University Press), and PI of the North

American Group of the Comprehensive

Dictionary of Global Chinese project (2016-

17, Commercial Press & Marshall Cavendish

Education). He also has served on the editorial

board of Sino-American Humanity Studies, L2

Journal, Sinología Hispanica, Chinese

American Society and Culture, 《国际汉语教

育》, 《汉语世界》 and 《世界华文教育》

. He is a founding member of three

international conference series on Chinese

language research and teaching, and

organized or co-organized more than a dozen

national and international conferences.

Masahiro Endo 遠藤雅裕 is Professor

(in charge of Chinese) in Faculty of Law,

Chuo University, Japan. Professor Endo took

the degree master of arts from Waseda

University in 1994. After finishing the

doctoral course, he joined Chuo University as

a full-time lecturer in 1997. He was promoted

to associate professor in 2001, and promoted

to professor in 2007. He is teaching a course

on Chinese dialectology at faculty of letters,

except teaching standard Chinese at faculty of

law in Chuo University. He also used to teach

Hakka at Tokyo Metropolitan University.

Professor Endo has worked on

descriptive research of Taiwanese Hailu

Hakka for about thirteen years and published

The Vocabulary of Taiwanese Hailu Hakka (in

Japanese, Chuo University Press, 2016).

Recently his research interests lie primarily in

Hakka (including Indonesian Lufeng Hakka

descripted by S. Schaank) syntax and

semantics, with a special focus on the

relationship between the serial verb

construction, and the development of the

aspectual markers, the disposal construction.

Other than this, he has ever researched the

comparative construction and the modality

markers of Hailu Hakka, farther more

researched the grammatical issues (includes

the disposal construction) of Laoqida and

basic color terms in Sinitic Languages. These

research papers are seen in Chuugoku Gogaku

(Journal of Chinese Linguistics, The Chinese

Linguistic Society of Japan), Chugoku

Bungaku Kenkyu (Journal of Chinese

Literature, The Chinese Literature Society of

Waseda University), Kaipian, and Journal of

Tiwanese Language and Literature (Taiwan

Languages and Literature Society), etc. He

worked as an executive committee member in

Chinese Literature Society of Waseda

University for three years, and as several

committees in The Chinese Linguistic Society

of Japan (CLSJ) for more than ten years. He is

an editorial committee member in CLSJ

nowadays. He also has been working or

worked as a referee for several journals such

as Chuugoku Gogaku, Chugoku Bungaku

Kenkyu, and at Academia Sinica, etc.

Hyun-Cheol Kim 金鉉哲 is Professor

in Department of Chinese Language &

Literature, at the Yonsei University of Korea.

Dr. Kim received his PhD in linguistics from

the Yonsei University of Korea in 1999. His

essays having won outstanding research

Achievement thesis awards at Yonsei

University in 2018. Before joining Yonsei

University as an Assistant Professor in March

2002, he was Associate Professor teaching

Chinese linguistics in the Seonam University

(1997-2001). Dr. Kim’s research interests lie

Chinese linguistics, Chinese syntax and

semantics, Chinese pedagogical grammar,

contrastive grammar of Chinese and Korean.

He has worked on a variety of research topics

such as objects, repetition, terminology,

euphemism, synonym words, lexicality,

ambiguity, modality, quantification, quantity,

subjectivity, subjectification, contrastive

analysis and cognitive analysis, and has

published or co-edited 90 books and 91

articles.He service to the field includes

refereeing for conferences and for various

journals such as Korea Journal of Chinese

Language and literature, Korea Foreign

Languages Education, Korea Journal of

Chinese Linguistics, Korea Chinese Teaching

and Studies, Chinese Linguistics, Journal of

Modernization of Chinese language

Education, etc. He was elected to the

President of The Korea Association of

Chinese Teaching(2015-2016), and served as

the Deputy vice president of The Korea

Association of Foreign Languages

Education(2011-2018). He now serves as the

Editorial member of Chinese

Linguistics(2015-), the Vice president of The

Society for the Research of Chinese Language

and Literature(2017- ), the Dean of Yonsei

Institute for Sinology (2015- ).

Chia-Ying Lee 李佳穎 is a Research

Fellow & Deputy Director in the institute of

linguistic, Academia Sinica, Taiwan. Dr. Lee

received her PhD in the department of

psychology from the National Chung-Cheng

University in 2000. Before joining Academia

Sinica as an Assistant research in 2002, she

worked as a Post-Doctoral Associate in the

Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and

Technology at the University of Illinois at

Urbana-Champaign (2001-2002).

Dr. Chia-Ying Lee’s research concerns

the neurobiology of Chinese language

processing by using the advanced

neuroimaging techniques, such as ERPs,

MEG, and fMRI. Dr. Lee’s research projects

include cognitive and neural underpinnings of

Chinese reading, the development of speech

perception in early childhood and its relation

to typical and atypical Chinese literacy, and

reading comprehension in aphasic and aging

brain. Her research team also collaborates

with researchers in computer science to

develop the computer-assist Chinese learning

program for dyslexic children. Dr. Lee’s

research has appeared in a broad array of

scholarly journals such as Brain and

Language, Neuroimage, Journal of

Neurolinguistics, Neuropsychologia, among

other publications. Her contribution has been

recognized by several awards, including the

fellow of the Association for Psychological

Science in America, the Outstanding Research

Award and the Excellent Scholar Project

Award from the Ministry of Science and

Technology in Taiwan, and the Research

Award for Junior Research investigators from

Academia Sinica.

Bin Li 李彬 is currently an Associate

Professor in City University of Hong Kong

(CityU). She received her BA in English from

Shandong University and MA in Applied

Linguistics from Beihang University (1999,

2002) in China, and her Ph.D. in Linguistics

from University of Florida (2006) in U.S.A.

Upon graduation, she joined CityU, where she

has taught undergraduate and graduate

courses in linguistics and translation. Her

main research interests lie in cross-language

speech perception, speech prosody, second

language acquisition, and teaching

English/Chinese as a foreign language. She

has received diverse grants to investigate

Chinese learning by ethnic minorities,

interface of prosody and pragmatics in

Chinese, phonetic characteristics of speech in

adverse/atypical conditions, and sound

variation and changes in Chinese dialects. Her

research outcome has appeared in Journal of

phonetics, Journal of Chinese Linguistics,

Journal of Psycholinguistics Research,

International Journal of Chinese Linguistics,

Journal of Quantitative Linguistics and so on.

Dr. Li had served the Linguistics Society of

Hong Kong as its ExCom member (2014-

2015), and is presently the deputy secretary of

the Hong Kong chapter of the Association for

Modernization of the Chinese Language

Education.

Canlong Wang 王燦龍 is Professor and

Head of the Department of Syntax and

Semantics in the Institute of Linguistics,

Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. He

received his PhD in linguistics from the

Graduate School of Chinese Academy of

Social Sciences in 1999. Dr. Wang’s research

interests lie primarily in syntax and semantics

of Modern Chinese, with a special focus on

adverbials, phrases and sentence patterns

within the contemporary theoretical

frameworks. His main research area includes

syntax and semantics as well as historical

linguistics. He has published 50 research

papers on Chinese linguistics and more than

40 essays discussing various issues and

problems related to the use of the Chinese

language. His key publications are: 1)

Lexicalization and grammticalization: two

Chinese case studies of henbude and wuse, 2)

the grammatical similarities of the negative

words bu and mei in Modern Chinese, and 3)

motivation and generative mechanism of

novel compounds in Contemporary Chinese.

Progress Report on

IACL-27

The 27th Annual Conference of International Association of Chinese Linguistics

(IACL-27) will be held on May 10-12, 2019 at the Kobe City University of Foreign

Studies in Kobe, one of the most beautiful harbor cities in Japan. Aichi Prefectural

University is the first Japanese institution that was held IACL-11 in 2002. After 17

years, its host now comes to Japan again.

On January 10, 2019, the organizers of IACL-27 (Department of Chinese Studies at K-

CUFS) received all submissions, 688 abstracts for regular conference panels and 54

papers for the Young Scholar Award (YSA) competition. Besides the paper

submissions for the YSA, there are 688 English and Chinese abstract submissions,

among which, there are 277 for syntax and semantics, 129 for dialectology, 103 for

historical linguistics, 79 for language acquisition, 67 for phonology and phonetics, and

33 for other subcategories of Chinese linguistics. The notifications of acceptance to

IACL-27 will be announced and sent to the authors around February 28, 2019.

In addition to regular conference panels, IACL-27 will have five special panels,

including a workshop on genetics-linguistics interface, forums on sign linguistics and

morphology, panels on Sino-Tibetan linguistics and Sino-Korean linguistics.

Six distinguished linguists have been invited to give keynote speeches at the event.

GLOW in Asia offers a forum for presentation and discussion of advanced research in

theoretical linguistics. Its conferences take place within Asia but attract participants

from all over the world. This year's GLOW in Asia XII is a joint conference with the

21st Seoul International Conference on Generative Grammar (SICOGG 21). The

conference will take place on August 7-9 at Dongguk University in Seoul. The main

GLOW in Asia XII Workshop on Non-Complementation

Workshop Description

Since the earliest days of generative syntax, complementation has been the central

subject of intense debate. Generative works on complementation have followed two

primary strands of research. One is to examine the nature of the selectional

requirements imposed on embedding predicates and their complements. The other is to

delve into diverse empirical phenomena in the domain of clausal embedding. Along

with this issue, non-complementation has also received a great deal of attention in the

literature. One of the widely discussed topics concerning non-complementation is the

Internally Headed Relative Clause (IHRC) constructions, which differ in form as well

as meaning from the Externally Headed Relative Clause (EHRC) construction.

Some instances of specific topics on (non-)complementation include the following:

Are all the clausal complements embedded as an argument by their matrix selector?

(Moulton 2009)

Does clausal complementation involve modal or reportative operators? (Bhatt 1999,

Faller 2007)

Are embedded clauses combined with their matrix predicates through conjunction?

(Pietroski 2005).

When do root phenomena occur in subordinate clauses? (Hooper and Thompson 1973,

Haegeman 2014)

What pragmatic/semantic conditions license an IHRC and how can we describe them

in formal terms? (Kuroda 1976, Fuji 1998)

Is the IHRC construction parallel to other subordinate constructions? (Kim 2018)

The workshop aims to provide an opportunity to discuss any issues concerning

complementation and to explore new instantiations of and restrictions on

(non-)complementation.

第五屆方言語法博學論壇

2019 年 6 月 15 - 16 日

中山大學

一、會議簡介

「方言語法博學論壇」由香港中文大學和中山大學在 2015 年發起，自 2017 年開

始加入復旦大學，並由這三所學府輪流主辦，作為促進方言語法比較研究的平台，

著重粵語、吳語等東南方言的比較研究，推動跨地區研究，並加強學術交流和對

話。

「博學」二字把香港中文大學、中山大學、復旦大學聯繫起來。香港中文大學校

訓「博文約禮」的「博文」來自《論語》「君子博學於文」，《中庸》「博學之」

組成中山大學的校訓，而復旦大學的校訓則出自《論語》「博學而篤志，切問而

近思」。此外，「博學」也象徵當代語法學的一個方向，著重類型研究，提倡比

較分析。本論壇以「博學」命名，也就是希望方言語法研究朝向此目標，匯聚學

者，共同探索漢語語法特點。

二、投稿訊息

第五屆方言語法博學論壇將於 2019 年 6 月 15-16 日在中山大學舉行，誠意邀請

專家學者就相關課題提交論文提要。

本次論壇主題：漢語方言的言說動詞（東南方言為主，其他方言酌情考慮）。言

Meeting Description

ICSTLL is the premier international conference to do with the languages and linguistics

of the Sino-Tibetan (= Trans-Himalayan) language family, now in its 52nd year.

Call for papers

Papers are invited which address any aspect of the languages and linguistics of the Sino-

Tibetan language family. This includes, but is not necessarily limited to, phonetics,

phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, typology, and

documentation, including field reports. Papers are also welcomed which address the

study of languages which may fall outside of Sino-Tibetan, but which may be or have

been in contact with Sino-Tibetan languages, when language contact or genealogical

relationship is also a focus of the paper.

In observance of 2019 as the UNESCO International Year of Indigenous Languages,

we particularly welcome papers specifically addressing the study and conservation of

the many minority and Indigenous languages falling within the Sino-Tibetan family,

and papers authored by a native member of a minority or Indigenous language

community within the Sino-Tibetan language area. To facilitate this, a number of travel

bursaries will be made available for (a) scholars and/or students from Southeast Asian

nations (b) scholars and/or students who are native speakers/members of a minority

and/or Indigenous language/community of Mainland Asia, prioritizing

languages/communities of the Himalayan region (broadly defined). Application for

travel bursaries will take place after the abstract selection process; only authors of

papers whose abstracts have been accepted for presentation at the conference will be

invited to apply.

In conjunction with the 25th Himalayan Languages Symposium (to be held January 28-

29 at the University of Sydney), a day of Workshops will additionally be held on

January 27. To submit a proposal for a Workshop, please send a Workshop Description

of no more than one sheet of A4-sized paper (plus an additional sheet for data and

第五届汉语副词研究学术研讨会

一、会议简介

在学界前辈和各位同仁的共同努力下，汉语副词研究已取得了长足的进步与发展，

成为汉语语法研究中一个颇受关注的重要领域。“汉语副词研究学术研讨会”在

张谊生教授的引领下，已由上海师范大学分别联合广西师范大学、重庆师范大学、

湖南师范大学、华侨大学于 2011 年 10 月、2013 年 10 月、2015 年 11 月、2017

年 12 月在桂林、重庆、长沙、厦门一共成功举办了四届，得到了学界的普遍关

注与认可，已成为语法学界最重要的专题研讨会之一。

为了推动汉语副词研究持续深入发展，“汉语副词研究学术研讨会”从第五届开

始，将转由上海外国语大学国际文化交流学院主办。我们乐意继续搭建好汉语副

词研究的学术交流平台，并衷心希望能够继续得到学界前辈和各位同仁的大力支

持。

第五届“汉语副词研究学术研讨会”将于 2019 年 11 月 15 日至 18 日（15 日报

一、征稿启事

由清华大学语言研究中心主持编辑的《清华语言学博士丛书》旨在传播优秀的语

言学博士的著作，帮助语言学领域的优秀青年学者迅速成长，为语言学的发展注

入新的活力。丛书自 2012 年开始已经连续编选了 8 辑，入选著作由上海中西书

局出版。每年出版 1 至 5 种。2019 年《清华语言学博士丛书》将征辑第 9 辑。

（三）《清华语言学博士丛书》坚持学术的高标准。其学术定位是：

1.以扎实的语言材料为基础，有较深入的分析和理论思考。

2.具有学术前沿性和创新性。

3.符合学术规范。

（四） 《清华语言学博士丛书》编委会由两岸三地的学者组成，名单如下：

国外同等条件的青年学者撰写的中国语言学的著作亦可申报。

2.著作可以在博士论文或博士后出站报告的基础上修改而成，已获得语言学博士

学位的青年学者的其他著作也可以申报。著作用中、英文撰写均可。

3.著作内容符合本章程第（三）条所规定的学术定位。

4.作者从取得博士学位的次年起即可申报，申报者需填写《申报表》，并有两位

专家（不包括《丛书》编委和顾问）推荐。

（六）申报时间为每年 4 月 1 日至 5 月 31 日。6 至 8 月份由同行专家匿名评审。

9、10 月份编委会开会评定， 10 月 31 日前公布评定结果。申报和评审的具体办

法另定。

National Chengchi University invite applications for a faculty position (rank open) in

Quantitative Linguistics, provisionally starting on August 1, 2019.

We are looking for a motivated faculty member with a specialty in quantitative

linguistics or a related discipline, who will contribute to our international research

profile and provide cutting-edge teaching to students in a cross-disciplinary

environment. The new appointee will be based at the Graduate Institute of Linguistics

at National Chengchi University, with a joint appointment at the Department of

National Chengchi University is a large public research university in Taipei, Taiwan

Southern Min: Comparative Phonology

and Subgrouping

Southern Mǐn refers to a group of Chinese dialects spoken mainly

in Southeast China and Taiwan. This group occupies a special

position in the study of Chinese dialects, not only because of its

large population of speakers (around 48 million) but also because

of its preservation of various archaic linguistic features long lost in

other dialects. In this book, B.C. Kwok applies the comparative

method on new fieldwork data to reconstruct the common sound

system of ‘Proto-Southern Mǐn’, from which all modern Southern

Mǐn varieties emerged. The syllable initials, finals and tonal

categories of Proto-Southern Mǐn are illustrated by more than 500

examples. In addition, this book offers an alternative view on the

subgrouping of 12 Southern Mǐn varieties. It proposes that the

Quánzhōu dialect and the Zhāngzhōu dialect form the two main

branches of the dialect group. This book should be of great interest

to advanced students and scholars in the fields of historical

linguistics and Chinese dialectology.

Chinese hands of time: The effects of

language and culture on temporal

gestures and spatio-temporal reasoning

Across languages and cultures, people use space to represent time.

In this dissertation Chinese people’s conceptualisation of time is

investigated, with a focus on the production and perception of

gestures, mental space-time mappings, and cultural temporal

values. These issues are studied cross-culturally and within the

Chinese culture, including analyses of different Chinese

populations.

The results show that, firstly, Chinese may have different mental

space-time mappings than Spaniards and Moroccans, in line with

their different cultural values towards time. Secondly, within the

Chinese culture, Mandarin-English bilingual speakers gesture

differently about time when speaking Mandarin Chinese than when

speaking English. Thirdly, Mandarin speakers can gesture the past

to their front and the extent to which they perform

past-in-front/future-at-back mappings is sensitive to the wording of

Mandarin space-time metaphors. Furthermore, Mandarin-Chinese

Sign Language (CSL) bimodal bilinguals perform different

temporal gestures than Mandarin-speaking non-signers, even when

both speak in their L1 Mandarin Chinese. Finally, deaf users of

CSL display a different spatio-temporal reasoning than Mandarin

speakers, and there is an effect of written Mandarin proficiency on

signers’ spatio-temporal reasoning. All these studies suggest that

there are not only long-term effects of cultural attitudes on the

spatialisation of time, but also immediate effects of the linguistic

space-time metaphors that probe people’s mental representations.

In conclusion, culture and language may not simply influence how

we think about time, but also shape the way we move our hands to

refer to time.

Focus Manifestation in Mandarin

Chinese and Cantonese: A Comparative

Perspective

One prominent function of natural language is to convey

information. One peculiarity is that it does not do so randomly but

in a structured way, with information structuring formally

recognized to be a component of grammar. Among all information

structuring notions, focus is one primitive needed to account for all

phenomena.

Focus Manifestation in Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese: A

Comparative Perspective aims to examine from a semantic

perspective how syntactic structures and focus adverbs in

Mandarin Chinese and semantic particles in Cantonese conspire to

encode focus structures and determine focus manifestation in

Chinese. With both as tonal languages, Mandarin Chinese and

Cantonese manifest different morpho-syntactic configurations to

mark focus. A general principle governing focus marking in

Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese is given in the book, which aims

to give a better understanding of the underlying principles the two

use to mark additive and restrictive meanings, and related focus

interpretations. Particular attention is also drawn to the

co-occurrence of multiple forms of restrictive and additive

particles in Cantonese, including adverbs, verbal suffixes, and

sentence-final particles. Linearity has been shown to be an

important parameter to determine how focus is structured in

Cantonese.

This book is aimed at advanced graduate students, researchers and

scholars working on Chinese linguistics, syntax and semantics, and

comparative dialectal grammar.
