Message from: District Governor Irwin Siegelwax

This year is not my year – but rather OUR year. Together, I am confident that the Lions of North Carolina will realize that our District 31-N, means that the N stands for Not Second to any other District. Thank you all, in advance, for your support as we begin an awesome year.
I would like to sincerely thank the fantastic job PDG Lion Vince did last year in merging three different cultures together to form our District. With your help we will be able to continue to build on the strong foundation he has created.
Thank you to PCC Lion Carlton Weeks for coordinating and teaching one of the New Officer Classes in Kinston. Lions Anne and PDG Lion Carlton, thank you for your help with the training at the Boys and Girls Home – Lake Waccamaw. Last but certainly not least – thank you to PDG Lion Barbara, for Treasurer training, and PDG Bryan Carr for conducting the membership training at both locations. In addition, at
the Boys and Girls Home – PDG Lion Vince had the honor of presenting to the family of the Boys and Girls Home founder the late A.D.Peacock, his award for being elected to the North Carolina Lions Hall of Fame. NOTE: Please look at my proposed visitation schedule, included in this newsletter, and confirm the date. Keep in mind that I will not be back in North Carolina until late on July 8th.
Our International President this year is Chancellor Bob Corlew from Tennessee. He has made his theme “New Mountains to Climb”.
As we celebrate 100 years of Lions service, we honor our past and build for our future, “If we are to ascend our next mountain, we must lay out a trail in front of us marking our trail for future generations of Lions who follow and preserving our tradition of service.
The Lions Club International (LCI) goal during our Centennial celebration is for every Club to induct a minimum of 3 new members, and every District to start at least one new Club! We can do this with your assistance! Furthermore, I am confident with your help in developing meaningful Community Service Projects and having exciting and interesting Club Programs, we will be able to retain considerably more members than we have ever done before.
Remember that every member of our team (together each accomplishes more) matters, and each makes an impact. We must encourage others to join us. Every new member will impact the lives of 30 people thru service.
During this coming year, lets meet the goal of President Chancellor Corlew to have 4 service projects during the year in each Club. A Zone/Club Strides Event would count as 1 service project. Doing this event qualifies as not only a service activity but potentially as a fund raising activity. Either of these Diabetes events has the ability to make the public aware that we do more than just – collect glasses and host pancake suppers.
On June the 6th, we were down 32 members for the year. However, of the 163 members we lost, 78% of them – were not because of deaths or moving. If we had retained only 30% of those we lost or 38 members, we would now be at plus 6 members for the year.
I am extremely confident that with your help and our efforts to retain as many members as possible, that we can conservatively end OUR year as plus 12 in members. We will do this via the following: Starting July 1 – Exciting New Changes will be happening!
1) New Member Contests
Contest 1 – will cover July thru December. Every time you and your Club add a new member, the name of the new member and their sponsor will be shown in the Monthly Bulletin. At the end of December, the Club that has added the most new members will receive an award. In case of a tie, each Club will receive an award. This award will be recognized at the Mid-Winter Convention and State Convention.
Contest 2 – will cover January thru June. Every time you and your Club add a new member, the name of the new member and their sponsor will be shown in the Monthly Bulletin. At the end of June, the Club that has added the most new members will receive an award. In case of a tie, each Club will receive an award. This award will be recognized at the
Awards and Installation in 2017. Continue to page 3
Continue from Page 2
Contest 3 – Sponsor Award This Award will cover the entire year from July 2016 thru June 2017. The individual that recruits the most new members will receive the Andrew Williams Sponsorship Award. In the case of a tie, each Lion will receive an Award.
2) Focus on Retention and Rebuilding Clubs I am offering the help of my team to help any Clubs in our District with rebuilding. Working together with you and my team we will be glad to help you add new more energetic and / or younger members.
3) Expand on our Diabetes Awareness / Strides Walks This year we will expand on the success of the Strides Walks / Diabetes Awareness of last year. I am extremely proud of the 26 Clubs (out of 64 in our District) that participated and we raised almost $26,000 for Diabetes. With your help the Public in our District will be able to associate us with more than just Pancake Suppers and Eyeglass Collection.
My goal this year is that we get 100% participation from every Club in either a Zone/Club Strides Walk and / or Diabetes Screening Event. I have promoted these events in November (National Diabetes Month). However, I do realize for some Clubs/Zones a different month may work better. That is perfectly acceptable. The key is that we ALWAYS do the event around the same time of the year as possible. This will help the public in our towns become accustomed to the idea that the Lions are doing something for Diabetes. Even if your Club is SMALL – you CAN do a Diabetes Screening Event. All that is needed is that you call the local Clinic/Doctors Office and/or Hospital to arrange for them to be present at a local event you are doing for Diabetes Screenings and Diabetes Awareness, they will be glad to help. Remember, when you conduct a Strides Walk and/or Diabetes screening to have information about the service activities that your Club performs. I am confident that these events will attract younger / more energetic members to our Clubs. If you would like a program on Diabetes Awareness/Strides contact my District Chair Lion Randy West at cell 919-820-0108 or [email protected].
4) Starting with the July Newsletter – Page 1 will look different Clubs with significant Service Activities will be displayed on Page 1. My message will begin on Page 2.
KEY DATES TO REMINDER: July 16 - Attend District 31-O Awards and Installation July 23 – Awards and Installation in Clinton NC – See Flyer. Reservations must be received by Friday July 15th.

1st Vice District Governor James Kiser
Fellow Lions: The operation on my right eye was completed on April 18, 2016 and I have had
several appointments since then for follow-ups on that eye. My last appointment
was on June 10, 2016 with a doctor from Taylor Retina Center in Raleigh . The
right eye is healing well and the retina is intact. . My vision in the right eye is still
not clear so the doctor will not schedule surgery on the left eye at this time until it
clears up. I have not driven or operated a vehicle at night since December, 2015 to
the present. To this point they have not determined why my vision is not clear. Many of you have had cataract surgery with several different short-term and lone
term outcomes, and there is no set standard. It has been a long and difficult time
for me. I continue to adjust and readjust to manage my district duties. So -far so
good. I look forward to getting through my medical situation and back to a normal
schedule of activities as soon as possible.
I am able to drive with a little difficulty during daylight hours and on June 11, 2016 I had intended to go to Lake
Waccamaw for district New Officer Training. Lake Waccamaw is about 111 miles from Buies Creek. In a very
short time after getting on Interstate 95 I found it very difficult with the speed and traffic volume to maneuver
safely. It got worse and I got off the Interstate. Before reaching my destination it became more difficult and I
made the decision to return to Buies Creek. I thought about the time participating in the training and the time of
day after the training for travel home and for safety reasons headed back home. I talked to DGE Siegelwax later
by telephone and related the situation to him about my absence from the training session.
I have taken this time to share my personal situation and relay my better understanding how visual impairment
impacts us even at low levels.

I plan to begin my assigned club visitations during July and continue them to completion throughout the year.
Based on my personal situation with my vision as well as new officers in the clubs I cannot give dates and times
of my visits but will adjust as needed. There are several factors which I must consider prior to traveling as needed.

Help our Veterans reconnect with their community by inviting
them to serve with your club today! Extended to June 30, 2018
Veterans have made so many contributions and sacrificed so much to serve our country. With many
service members returning home from serving in the military, this is a good time to provide them with
an opportunity to get involved. Veterans have a lot to offer, including practical and leadership skills, a
strong sense of dedication and commitment and they know what it means to be part of a team.
Ask now! The Veteran Program was set to expire on June 30, 2016 but the Lions Club International Board has agreed to extend the Involve a Veteran Program another two years. Thus the $30 entrance fee for veterans is waived until June 30, 2018.

responsibility for the clubs in Zones 1 thru 6 of the district while Lion Ray has the remainder. I look
forward to working with each club in my area to promote Brighter Visions. Lion Ray and I will take
turns writing a Bright Vision column for the District N newsletter.

My job is to support the club’s effort to meet that goal. I will do this by visiting your club to give a
Brighter Vision Program and answering questions via email or telephone. Finally, your club should have gotten (or will very soon receive) an invitation to the Brighter Vision
Kickoff. It will be August 6, 2 pm at Faison Presbyterian Church. 502 W. Main St. in Faison. Look for

the ocean environment and teaching them to surf. The Wrightsville Beach Lions Club, now part of the Wil-

Fellow Lions; Why we do this. With many visits to Camp Dogwood this year and Friday night's drawing of the Camp Dogwood Raffle, you quickly understand why you are so involved with what we do as NC Lions. As you enter the main gate and drive down the Camp Dogwood Way and crest the knoll, and slowly drive down the hill, it brings a smile of accomplishment and understanding of why you as leaders are involved in this wonderful foundation. Driving down the hill with the impressive brick structures on the left and right of you and facing the Joyce Building as you look for a parking spot, you sense the true meaning of service and outreach to those that really need us. And then as you walk through the sliding glass doors of the Joyce building, you hear laughter and conversations of Camp week at Camp Dogwood... Real life, real meaning of enhancing the quality of life for those we serve. You take a breath and say this is why we do this... You see smiles and hear laughter and the gracious thank you's from the vacationers. This is what we do united, doing bigger things than any other service organization in our state. This year has been a transition year, not only for the State Council, but for our foundation. I've tried to instill in you just how great and big you are. You do remarkable things and united in NC, our programs and services are impressive and we have to "think big." Your mantra in building your local club and continuing to do things in your community relies on the power of communication and your story is rich in history and success. What we do together can only rebuild Lions throughout NC. It's a story you have to tell. And it's crucial for the future of clubs and our wonderful foundation There has been a lot of challenges, but we have made tremendous progress this year in finding ways to extend our conversation to more people in our wonderful state. Rebuilding our partnership and receiving a grant of $20K with IFB Winston-Salem and Asheville, you see the fruit of the gift with our new pier. Thanks to IFB, they have furnished a bus for the camping season that will help with off-campus events. A special thank you to Chris Flynt and IFB. We will continue our bond with friends that parallel things we do for the betterment of each parties needs. I'm happy to announce we will receive a $10K gift from Miracles in Sight (formerly NC Eye Bank.) Dean Vavra, CEO, of Miracles in Sight really impressed me with the things they do all over world and how he and his board have built and expanded the organization. In our meeting, I told him we are here to help in any way, lets work together. Also, I want to thank Talbots for their response in partnering throughout year with an expansion upcoming for Brighter Visions Annual Fund Drive with their retail stores throughout NC. Finally, I will make further comments on the year and thank you's to the Executive Board, the Board of Directors and the Strategic Plan-ning Committee at the Installation Banquet in Raleigh on our incoming President's special night. I know Charles will do a wonderful job. It's been a "big year" for all of us.
Thank you for your great work,
Paul Bledsoe, NC Lions, Inc. President

Organ & Tissue Donation
North Carolina Lions are dedicated to the prevention of blindness and the restoration of sight. Since the
1950’s the Lions have been instrumental in educating the public of the need for donation. The Lions played an
important role in the early development and growth of the North Carolina Eye Bank, by providing financial
support and securing eye wills. Over the years our role has changed. On November 14, 1999 the NCLF
Board of Directors adopted the following position statement. “The North Carolina Lions Incorporated shall
be the education arm for the humanitarian acts of organ donation, procurement and transplantation of eye
tissue.”
Now in partnership with Donate Life North Carolina we can help you pledge the gift of eyes, organs and
tissues.
Who is Waiting Moms, sons, grandparents, friends, siblings, husbands, neighbors and newborns. People of all ages and all walks
of life are waiting for life-saving transplants. There are over 114,000 people on the national waiting list and
3,600 waiting in North Carolina. They have names and faces and lives that they are trying to hold together as
they wait for a transplant. Over 28,000 people began new lives in 2011 thanks to organ transplants and to
individuals like you who chose to register.
