The IAMI assists governments in the development of maritime training programmes both in the UK and internationally through sub groups formed from its wide range of subject matter experts.
The IAMI holds an Annual Conference and arranges other forums during the year on maritime training and education in UK & Europe.
The IAMI provides all the written examinations for engineering and deck for STCW Large Yachts Qualifications on behalf of the UK Maritime Coastguard Agency.
The IAMI is the governance for Maritime Hospitality training for the GUEST Program designed for the Super Yacht Sector
The IAMI role is also to respond to the training needs of the future reacting positively to demands of the wider maritime industry sectors.
Improvement & Development in Maritime Education
Established in 1993 from an amalgamation of the International Association of Navigation Schools (1917) and the Association of Maritime Engineering Schools (1952).
The IAMI current membership is formed by the majority of Maritime Training Providers, Colleges and training agencies across the UK & Internationally.

for an exchange of views between nautical colleges by
forming a channel of communication between
training providers jointly and the various international
bodies involved in the marine education and training and the certification processes.
MARINE QUALIFICATIONS
Marine higher education diplomas and
degree courses have been developed
over the last 50 years to deliver and
accredit the required underpinning
knowledge for a wide and diverse range
of marine professionals.
The IAMI members have created
appropriate mechanisms to enable
those partially qualified within or
outside of the core marine industry to
meet the necessary standards to obtain
higher academic qualifications.
Revised competence based
qualifications have also been devised
and accredited to the required standard
to guide and measure on board
development for seafarers.
EXAMINATIONS & CERTIFICATIONS
The IAMI members individually deliver
the full range of maritime courses from
higher marine education (degree level)
and training of all professional mariners
qualifications (short courses).
An example of recent educational
development activity for IAMI is the
new routes to marine statutory
certification based on the occupational
requirements of the industry and the
requirements of STCW 95 (as
amended.)
On behalf of the Maritime Coastguard
Agency IAMI undertakes the key role to
prepare written examinations and
manage the assessment of students for
a number of examination modules;
including Deck Yacht to STCW,
Engineering Officer of the Watch
modules and a Boat Master module.
The IAMI also provide the
administrations and certification
platform for issue of the Super Yacht
Hospitality IAMI GUEST qualifications.
In addition, IAMI Members act as industry advisors on maritime operational issues through working group’s setup by Government, to
consider future developments in maritime education and training.
IAMI has regular meetings between its members and the Maritime Coastguard
Agency (MCA) to discuss maritime qualifications and certification; the
syllabus content, examination structures and related proposed changes.
This vital work is developed by IAMI through its internal Deck, Engineeringand Small Craft Sub Group structures.
This serves also to develop best teaching practice.
These meetings are normally convened 3 times per year.

The newly founded IAMI Maritime Hospitality Sub Group, made up of IAMI
members, forms the platform for discussions, continuous improvement
and development of maritime hospitality and chef training.
The GUEST Program sits within this Sub Group and forms the launch pad to future training developments and
collaborations with hospitality sectors.
These meeting are normally convened 3 times per year.

The IAMI is fully represented on the Main
Board of the MNTB (Merchant Navy
Training Board), the MNTB Technical
Committee and Careers Forum, the
Maritime Skills Alliance, and UK Maritime
promotional forums such as Maritime UK.
Over many years it has helped to develop
and maintain Occupational Standards and
to devise schemes of training for entrants
at a variety of levels to meet the needs of
different sectors of the industry.
REPRESENTATIONMARITIME TRAINING & EDUCATION POLICY
MANAGING NEW MARINE QUALIFICATIONS
IAMI members, for the benefit of the wider industry, coordinate
amendments to the majority of all marine qualifications within the
maritime sector.
Proposed changes are responsive to international conventions, UK statuary
instruments and also to the needs of specific sectorial requirements,
demands from employers, changes to educational entry requirements for new entrants and mature individual
seafarers wanting further professional development.
The IAMI is continually expanding membership into all sectors of the maritime industry such as towage,
offshore renewables, marine operations and super yachts.
AFFLIATIONS
Thr IAMI is officially affiliated by membership to several sister organisations such as IMarEST, PYA, Global MET and The Nautical Institute.
IAMI extends and receives mutual invitations to engage in joint areas of interest. These links help to forge alliances that enable effective lobbying of
government at both national and international levels. It likewise is proactive in areas of marine training where there is rapid growth in demands for qualified
mariners such as Superyacht and the renewable energy sectors.

The founding UK Member Colleges & Universities have a combined wealth of experience in marine education, with committed and well-qualified staff offering
an excellent range of modern facilities for simulation and practical training.
They pride themselves on maintaining the highest standards of teaching and of integrity, particularly in relation to assessment, and in responding to the needs of
the maritime industries and individual seafarers.
Annual General Meeting& Annual Conference | May 2020(IAMI is a UK Company ‘Limited by
guarantee’)
The IAMI annual networking platform for members and invited guests to communicate directly on
current activities of the Sub-Groups and to be advised by the Executive Board on current business and the intended further development of
the Association over the forthcoming year.
In addition to sub groups and its annual meetings, IAMI organise International conferences such as: In February 2013 a 2-day seminar on the European STCW standard, November 2014 Human Element factors and November 2016 HELM “Is it working” Conference.
