Summit, where heads of government of each member meet

to discuss and resolve regional issues related to Economicand Cultural development.

Limitations of ASEAN

y Non-ASEAN countries have criticised ASEAN for being too soft

in its approach to promoting human rights and democracy in led

Myanmar.

y  ASEAN has been criticized, in the past, of being a mere talking

shop. However, leaders such as the Philippines' Foreign Affairs

Secretary, Alberto Romulo, said it would be a workshop not a

talk shop. Others have also expressed similar sentiment

Bridging the development gap in ASEAN, enabling the four new ASEAN members to catch up with the rest and join them in advancingthe Association into a more meaningful and more prosperouseconomic community.

Creating conducive economic and political climate for free movement

of creative and talented people who can bring to ASEAN thetechnological and value-added edge.

Managing ASEANs external economic linkages to enhance thecompetitiveness of ASEAN as a regional production and touristdestination, as well as to enhance the competitive edge of individual
