Theme of the Conference:Youth development is a process that prepares a young person to meet the challenges of adolescence and adulthood and achieve his or her full potential. The conditions for healthy youth development responsibility is shared by families, schools, and communities.

There are a few elements essential to healthy youth development which can be identified as physical and emotional safety of the young; experiencing belonging and ownership; developing self-worth; developing quality relationship with peers and adults; discussing about conflicting values; pride and accountability that come with achievement and mastery and expanding their capacity to both enjoy and succeed in life.

However there are challenges. Youth are often victims of social injustice, inequity, consumerism and economic crises. Poverty and unemployment have made young people more vulnerable. Social Media has become almost addictive for the young people today. It is in this context that we need approaches and methodologies which are exponential and innovative. We need to look at emerging trends and alternative approaches which have altered the lives of young people in diverse cultural and social settings and those models where youth are the stakeholders of their own development.

1. This Conference will discuss Youth Development from a multi-dimensional perspective which include Education, Skill development, Physical wellbeing, Psychological wellbeing, Political participation & Civic engagement, Role of stakeholders and Inclusive approach.

2. The papers and models from different contexts will serve as great sources of learning for those who have been carrying out various services to the young, often traditional and stereo-typed.

3. It will deliberate more on interventions & best practices of youth development than on youth problems its causes and consequences .

Dr Sevasti-Melissa Nolas is a Senior Lecturer in Social Work at the University of Sussex and the Principal Investigator of the ERC-funded Connectors Study. She has a background in social psychology from which she regularly deviates from by wandering into anthropological, philosophical and sociological literatures. From this interdisciplinary perspective, and using a range of qualitative and creative methods, she has carried out research on systems for social support especially for children, young people and families experiencing difficulties in their lives (domestic violence, social exclusion and ill-mental health). She has written on the lived experience of participating in such support systems. More recent work has turned towards understanding 'the political' in everyday childhoods and family life across difference.
