ICOI WORLD NEWS • October 2010 3

There will be another rousing, Table Clinic/Poster Presentation competition held on Thursday during the Welcome Reception in the Exhibition Hall. Please visit our website at www.icoivegas2011.org for more information.

Additionally, the ADIA will have a full 2 ½ day program for staff members. Dentists should plan to bring their team to this event and, among other things, learn how to “sell” implant cases to patients. These invaluable instructive courses pay for themselves. Your staff should be able to better assist the doctors with patient care (hygienists and assistants) and with management of their patients (front office staff).

We have negotiated an excellent room rate at the Bellagio for this symposium. Delegates will get the rate of $189 per night for this meeting. Please contact the Bellagio as soon as possible as rooms at this rate are going fast. Be sure to identify your meeting, the ICOI Implant Symposium, to get this reduced rate. You can reserve your room by calling the Bellagio directly at toll free 888-987-6667 / 702-693-7444 or by going online at our website, www.icoivegas2011.org.

As reported in the June 2010 ICOI World News, a select group of dentists from East African countries completed an intensive 21- day distance learning module and 6-day mini-residency spanning November 2009 and March 2010 under the tutelage of Dr. Christopher Ogunsalu. Upon completion of the training, all joined ICOI. Seven Fellowships, two Masterships and one Diplomate were awarded at a ceremony on June 6, 2010 presided over by Dr. Ambrose Obiechina, ICOI Ambassador and former Dean of Ibadan College of Dentistry.

Twenty-eight Japanese dentists who have just completed a multi-day course with several venues, had their final instruction given by Dr. Ady Palti at his clinic in Baden-Baden and concluded the course at ICOI World Congress in Hamburg. In addition to being the world’s largest dental implant organization and provider of continuing dental implant education, the ICOI is devoted to providing implant education to the entire dental team to better serve its patients.

Dear Doctor is the premier provider in dental education for consumers, and our quarterly magazine details an exhaustive section on implantology. This demonstrated commitment to dental implant patient education makes for an ideal partnership in helping ICOI members promote implant dentistry and their organization. It also provides the ICOI with a platform for collaborating with a national magazine to provide consumers with easy-to-understand articles

focused on real-world dental implant issues and treatments,” said Dr. Mario Vilardi, president and publisher of Dear Doctor – Dentistry & Oral Health. He continued, “As for Dear Doctor, we are elated to have such a prestigious, internationally-renowned organization recognize our magazine as an excellent patient educational resource with great credibility for consumers. And with this new partnership, we can continue to set lofty goals for providing concise, unbiased and accurate information on implantology.”

This new partnership kicks off with an ICOI-approved feature article in the magazine’s upcoming 2010 issue featuring Vanna White, the reigning queen and face of one of America’s most beloved game shows, “Wheel of Fortune.” It will continue with all future issues. “While our organization’s goals have been focused on continuing education for the dental team,” said Dr. Kenneth W.M. Judy, co-chairman of the ICOI’s

Board of Directors, “we are excited about the patient education opportunities our endorsement provides for both the ICOI and Dear Doctor.”

EXTRACTION SITES

Extraction sites with deficient structural support (ex. buccal defects) often require tenting membranes to prevent collapse into the defect. In these cases, titanium-reinforced membranes help reshape the site to the original dimensions of the ridge. Although primary closure may be obtained, Cytoplast® titanium-reinforced membranes are designed to withstand exposure and prevent bacterial penetration1, 2, 3, making them especially well-suited for extraction site reconstruction.1. Due to a vertical root fracture, the entire buccal plate is missing. The titanium-reinforcement of the Cytoplast® Ti-250 Anterior Narrow allows easy placement and maintenance of space.

The dense PTFE membrane has a pore size of <0.3µm, making it occlusive to both soft tissue cells AND bacteria. Primary closure is not necessary.

At two weeks, healing over the membrane is excellent – no inflammatory response and infection-free.

Because the membrane is left exposed, a non-surgical removal requires only topical anesthetic after 4 weeks of healing.

Two weeks after removal of the membrane, soft tissue has re-epithelialized over the socket. Soft tissue contours are preserved.

Re-entry at 4 months shows regeneration of the ridge to its original dimensions. Implants may now be placed in an optimal location.
