Overview of the function: The Assam State Biodiversity Board celebrated the ‘International day for Biological Diversity’ on 22nd May, 2018 on the theme ‘Celebrating 25 years of action for Biodiversity’ at Recreation Park cum Medicinal Garden, Diphu, Karbi Anglong. This function is jointly organized by Assam State Biodiversity Board (ASBB) and the Assam forest Department. The event was sponsored by National Biodiversity Authority (NBA), Chennai.
The Chief Guests of the function were Shri Parimal Suklabaidya, Hon’ble Minister, Environment & Forests, Government of Assam, and Shri Tuliram Ronghang, Hon’ble Chief Executive Member (CEM), Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC).

The other dignitaries on the dais included Shri Mridul Kumar Mahanta, Deputy Commissioner of Karbi Anglong; Speaker and Deputy Speaker of KAAC; around 22 Executive Members of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council; Shri N. K. Vasu, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests & Head of Forests Force, Assam; Shri Abhijit Rabha, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Karbi Anglong; Shri A. K. Johari, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Biodiversity and Climate Change) and Member Secretary of Assam State Biodiversity Board. The function was also attended by Dr. Ranjana Gupta, IFS, Special Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wetlands); Mr. A. M. Singh, IFS, Special Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (CAMPA); Shri S. K. Srivastava, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Territorial, Upper Assam Zone), Conservator of Forests, all local Divisional forests Officers, Assistant Conservator of Forests and Range Officers of the Forest Department. In addition, Representatives of Educational Institutions, Members of Biodiversity Management Committees, school children and local people also attended the function.

As a part of celebration, drawing, painting and slogan competition were organized among school children for generating awareness amongst the school children on 14th May, 2018. Around 2647 school children from 60 different school participated in the competitions.

Main events of the function:
1. Inaugural of exhibition: The function marked its beginning by inaugural of the exhibition by Hon’ble Chief Guests. The exhibition displayed painting, drawing and slogan of the school children who participated in the competition prior to 22nd May, 2018 and medicinal plants found in Karbi Anglong.

2. Plantation: The inaugural of exhibition was followed by plantation of saplings by the Chief Guests, Forests Officials and other Dignitaries.

3. Address by Dignitaries: Shri Abhijit Rabha, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Karbi Anglong, welcomed the Dignitaries and the gathering to the function. Shri A. K. Johari, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Biodiversity and Climate Change) and Member Secretary of Assam State Biodiversity Board gave an introductory presentation on biodiversity, its significance and conservation. Shri N. K. Vasu, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests & Head of Forests Force, Assam, Chief Guests of the function- Shri Parimal Suklabaidya, Hon’ble Minister, Environment & Forests, Government of Assam, and Shri Tuliram Ronghang, Hon’ble Chief Executive Member (CEM), Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) also addressed everyone present in the function and delivered their speech on conservation significance of biodiversity.

4. Distribution of Certificates and release of start-up grant to Biodiversity Management Committees of Karbi Anglong District: Certificates and start–up grant was given to the 10 (ten) Biodiversity Management Committees of Karbi Anglong district by the Dignitaries present on the dais.

5. Felicitation of Retired Forest Officer, Shri Ranjan Baruah: Retired Forest Officer, Shri Ranjan Baruah was the man behind creation of the Recreation Park cum Medicinal Garden of Diphu, Karbi Anglong. He preserved 563 species of medicinal plants in the garden. He was felicitated and awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution towards conservation in the event.
6. Release of Brochure on Karbi Anglong, and Assamese Booklet on ‘Assam State Biodiversity Board’: Brochure on Karbi Anglong titled ‘Karbi Anglong- Moving ahead for Biodiversity Conservation’ and, Assamese booklet on Assam State Biodiversity Board was released by Hon’ble Minister, Environment & Forests, Government of Assam.

7. Presentation of Prizes to winners: Drawing, painting and slogan competition was
held for school children on 14th May, 2018 under three different categories viz., Group A ( Class I – V), Group B (Class VI- VIII) and Group C ( Class IX- XII). 2647 school children from 60 schools in Karbi Anglong district participated in the competition. Total participants in Group A were 1185, Group B was 1028 and in Group C were 434.

8. Program by children: Song and dance was performed by school children as a part of the function.

9. Exhibition by Self-Help Groups: There was an exhibition cum sale of local vegetables, traditional Karbi attire by the Self-Help Groups of Karbi Anglong.

10. Seedling distribution: The program ended with free distribution of saplings to the local people and students.
