International Faculty of Engineering (IFE)

The International Faculty of Engineering (IFE) is a unit of TUL offering programmes taught entirely in English or in French – a unique offer among technical universities in Poland. The staff are academics from different TUL faculties and visiting professors skilled at teaching across languages and cultures. At present there are over 1000 students in the faculty, including about 200 students from universities across Europe. Since Poland’s accession to the European Union in 2004, IFE has participated in such EU programmes as Erasmus and Campus Europae. During the “mobility semester” all third-year students (approximately 200 students each year) have the opportunity of studying in one of over 100 universities in 15 countries under the Erasmus programme.

IFE’s mission is to prepare students for the modern challenges and opportunities brought by globalisation and rapid technological progress. Its goal is to educate professional engineers and managers fluent in foreign languages, with expertise in science, technology, management and business. All IFE programmes include fundamentals of science, general and specialized technical subjects, and courses in management and organization. In addition to core modules, students can choose optional courses according to individual needs.

The success of IFE is measured by the fact its alumni enjoy one of the highest rates of employment among technical university graduates in Poland.

EUROPEAN PROJECT SEMESTER

The European Project Semester (EPS) runs twice a year and comprises the entire workload for the semester (30ECTS credits). Students from various engineering and business programmes work in teams on multidisciplinary projects.

Participation in the EPS develops cross-cultural communication, teamworking and problem-solving skills.

Activities include:• project-basedlearning• internationalteamworking• interdisciplinarycooperation• self-directedstudies

The semester is divided into two parts. The first part comprises short intensive in-class courses with international teachers. The second other part is a project-based programme that builds on the knowledge, initiative, and students creativity.

International teams of four to six work together on interdisciplinary research projects, applying their knowledge and acquiring cross-cultural communication skills. The projects are supervised by academic staff and integrated into the state university curriculum. The programme also contains numerous cultural and social activities, to promote international friendships and networks. The main language of communication is English.

To take part in the European Project Semester, students should have completed two years of studies at a technical university that is either a partner of the Erasmus Programme, or which offers Bachelor or Master of Science degrees. However, students with other qualifications will be considered.

More about IFE

The International Faculty of Engineering (IFE) was founded in 1992, through cooperation between the Technical University of Lodz and The University of Sydney, and thanks to great support from the Australian embassy in Poland. The first students began their studies in the 1993/1994 academic year, on the Electromechanics programme (renamed in 2000 as Mechanical Engineering and Applied Computer Science). In 1996, Międzynarodowy Wydział Inżynierii (IFE’s original Polish official name) evolved into Centrum Kształcenia Międzynarodowego, the International Faculty of Engineering in its present shape, with Tomasz Saryusz-Wolski (Ph.D.) appointed as Faculty Director.

The founding mission of IFE was to educate engineers who, in addition to their technical competences, can communicate fluently in foreign languages. Students of IFE were to be recruited from among both Polish citizens and candidates from abroad. The approach has been a great success, and IFE has become one of the most popular faculties among prospective students in Poland. Over the years, several new study courses have been introduced, in particular a whole new programme of studies in French. In 1994/1995 the Faculty began to offer a Business and Technology programme, and a year later IFE began enrolment on the Telecommunications and Computer Science degree course. Since 1997, students have been able to choose a study programme taught exclusively in French, Gestion et Technologie. In 1998, a fourth programme in English, Biotechnology, was introduced. And in 2004 a fifth, Computer Science.

The academic staff of IFE are recruited from experienced professors from various faculties in the TUL and visiting professors from other universities. The first visiting lecturer was professor Daniel Lityński, Dean of the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department in the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York.

Since its inception, IFE has placed great emphasis on promoting international student exchange, beginning with its participation in the Tempus programme. In 1998 IFE introduced “mobility semester” during which around 200 students each year study at foreign universities as part of their degree programmes. Now, within the framework of the Erasmus programme, students can choose from between over 100 European universities to visit in 15 countries. IFE has signed agreements on joint diplomas with ENSAM, ESC Chambery and Groupe Sup de Co La Rochelle in France, and with Coventry University in Great Britain. IFE is also a popular destination among European Erasmus exchange students. In the academic year 2010/11 the faculty welcomed more than 250 international students.

FACTS AND FIGURES

Lodz

In the nineteenth century, in the very centre of Poland, Lodz developed as a centre for textile manufacturing. Now, Lodz is the third largest city in Poland, famous for its Film Academy and for its eclectic Piotrkowska Street, part of which is paved with bricks bearing the names of Lodz citizens. Piotrkowska Street is well known not only because of its length and Art Nouveau mansion houses, but also because it boasts of more than a hundred pubs, restaurants and café gardens.

Today, the old brick factories have been transformed into housing, commercial offices or shopping centres. You can find theatres, cinemas, a concert hall, as well as the entertainment and shopping centre Manufaktura. There is the monumental complex of factory premises and residential buildings called Księży Młyn, a unique Jewish cemetery and many museums. Lodz is also an academic hub, with more than 120 thousand students studying in 6 (including TUL) state-owned and 22 private Higher Educational Institutions.
