A Sign of Quality
The Manufacturer and Certifier
PAM access covers and gratings
consistently manufacture products of
the highest quality in adherence
with the BS EN 1SO 9000 series of
quality systems, approved by the
BSI, under the registered firm
approval scheme. This involves
periodically subjecting the company, its
processes, and its suppliers to the most
rigorous and objective assessments, providing
reassurance that the consistently high
standards of quality are maintained.
Further assurance of product quality is
gained from the fact that the majority of the
PAM product range is also certified with the
prestigious British Standard Kitemark.*
This internationally respected symbol of
product quality accredits the following
standards relevant to municipal castings
manufactured in the UK:
BS EN124 (1994)
European standard for gully tops and
manhole tops for vehicular and pedestrian
users
BS 5834: Part 2 (1983)
Specification for small surface boxes
BS 5834: Part 3 (1985)
Specification for Large surface boxes
BS 750 (1984)
Specification for underground fire hydrants
and surface boxes and covers
Today, quality is of paramount importance
in the construction of the road network, not
just to manufacturers, but to suppliers, installers
and road users. With the ever increasing
traffic volumes on our roads today, the strain
placed on access covers and gully gratings is
at its highest levels.
In this climate, specifiers have become
increasingly conscious of their obligation to
ensure road user safety by demanding
products that are manufactured and tested to
the highest standards. Customers can be sure
that the PAM product range bearing the BSI
kitemark are of the highest quality and have
been independently certified as complying
with BS EN124.
The Certifiers Accreditor
When specifying products that are by their
nature installed in very onerous locations,
much due care and attention must be
placed on selecting a manufacturer that is
certified by an institution such as the BSI.
A specification can request that products
are ‘kitemarked’ or ‘similar approved’. The
difficulty for specifiers is defining what is
‘similar’.
References to EN 45012, EN 45011 and
EN 45001 will help ensure that the
competence level of the certifying
organisation has itself been
assessed. In the UK, specifiers can
request that the certification
organisation has been accredited
by UKAS (United Kingdom
Accreditation Service)
With this in mind we recommend that
specifiers request the following:1) The Manufacturers
ISO 9001 CertificateBS EN 124 Certificate & Product Schedule
2) The Certification BodiesEN 45001 CertificateThis is the schedule for site andlaboratory testing, which demonstratesthey are approved for BS EN 124EN 45011 CertificateCertifies the issue of productconformity certificates within thescope of BS EN 124EN 45012 ScopeThe scope, which demonstrates thatthey can assess a manufacturer toISO 9000

PAM access covers and gratings
manufacture a range of high performance
ductile iron access covers and frames. We
recognise the need to provide a material that
is capable of combating the wear
characteristics inherent with the increasing
amount of vehicular traffic on our roads
today.
What is Ductile Iron
Spheroidal graphite or ductile iron is a
unique form of iron which prior to the metal
casting process receives a treatment with
magnesium to produce an exceptionally
strong, impact resistant durable metal.
The difference between Ductile
and Grey Iron
The addition of magnesium at the molten
stage transforms the flakes of graphite which
are common with the grey iron casting
process and transforms them into spheroidal
or nodular form. The spheroidal structure
provides a higher tensile strength as well as a
higher ‘strength to weight’ ratio when
compared with the properties inherent with
grey iron manufacture.
The benefits of Ductile Iron
Ductile irons high strength to weight ratio
allows for the production of light weight
castings that offer what can amount to a 50%
weight saving over traditional grey iron
equivalents.
The high strength inherent with ductile iron
not only minimises the risk of failure when
installed but reduces the likelihood of
breakages in transit and off loading.
In a market place that is increasingly
being encouraged to specify products that
offer less of a manual handling risk, the dead
weight of the castings during both installation
and actual operation in service is recognised
as a key feature and obvious attribute.

Ductile Iron Spring Bar Technology
Continual development on advancing the
elasticity inherent in ductile iron has provided
PAM with a unique method of locking a
number of its units. The ‘Spring bar’
technology uses the ductile iron’s elasticity in
the area where the components interact and
allows for the locking of the grating or cover
within the frame without the use of a
mechanical locking device. There is an
obvious benefit to simplifying the current
methods used to retain a cover or grate within
the frame.
The spring bar tecnology will allow for
stability under load and silence in operation.
Gully Gratings and the Ductile Advantage
Ductile iron’s inherent properties of high
tensile strength and resistance to impact
allows the waterway area of gully grates to be
evenly distributed over the surface of the
gratings without losing structural strength. This
provides improved drainage efficiency per
clear opening size, particularly in the 90mm
area closest to the kerb.

Manhole covers and gully grates installed
in the middle east should meet the
requirements of the European Standard BS
EN124. This applies to all situations, road and
off-road and all materials. Products designed
to BS EN124 are grouped and classified
depending on their place of installation.
It is the responsibility of the engineer to
ensure that the correct product is specified:
‘‘The appropriate class of manhole top or
gully top to be used depends upon the
place of installation. The selection of the
appropriate class is the responsibility of the
designer. Where there is any doubt the
stronger class should be selected.’’

The BS EN124 standard provides a general
guide to product stability and sets out test
load parameters for the various classes of
products in terms of static load tests.
However, it provides little specific
information on dynamic loads imposed by the
wide variety of traffic conditions found on
modern road systems.
Product selection in most cases is a
simple matter, but long association with
specifiers has convinced us that there are
certain conditions which dictate a little extra
care in making a selection. The diagram
illustrates vulnerable spots where products
may be subjected to extreme loading.
With BS EN124 offering little or no
guidance on selection of products under
dynamic loads, PAM has developed a
portfolio of products incorporating the
Interaction range of covers and gratings
which, when complemented with the
selection guidance software, enables the
specification engineer to make the right
choice with confidence.

2. Roundabouts
Turning vehicles encourage movement
between cover/grate and frame and can
increase wear. Gully grates are particularly
vulnerable at clipping points.
1. Dual Carriageways
Speed of traffic increases the impact
loading on castings and deceleration areas
at roundabouts can be
particularly aggressive.
3. Hard shoulders
Changes in traffic flow necessary to
accommodate maintenance work or
emergencies, can result in units being
required to accept loadings and conditions
for which they may not have been intended.
Note: In each of the circumstances outlined
above, a product of a high specification
should be considered. For further advice,

Services department on the numbers

7. Narrow lanes
Width restrictions can lead to road
castings being heavily trafficked, particularly
on bend clipping points. Gully grates are
particularly vulnerable.
6. Traffic calming
The installation of traffic islands and
narrowing of roads to slow traffic will increase
the vulnerability of gully grates to clipping.
5. Bus routes
The pulling into the kerb or lay-by and
braking of buses result in gratings being
required to accept loadings not
experienced through normal
traffic.
4. Traffic lights
Acceleration, deceleration and turning all
increase the stress on road ironwork.

The Nottingham University research gave us an understanding
of the transfer of the dynamic loads from traffic onto the manhole
cover and subsequently from the manhole frame to the chamber
structure. It was found that in conventional designs the load is
concentrated at the corners of the casting creating excess strain
on specific areas of the bedding material. The new LTS feature
(Load Transfer System) designed specifically to reduce this strain in the mortar thereby reducing the
risk of cracking which can cause premature failure.
LTS Load Transfer System
The system comprises the following four features:
1. Corner Webs
The shape of the flange has been optimised so that there is an increased area where the
load is concentrated. This minimises the strain in the bedding and will give a reduction of
measurable strain between 30% to 50%. The design increases the ‘Pressure Bearing Area’
where the load is concentrated and provides excellent seating for good installation. The
reduction of flange width between the corners has the effect of reducing torsional stiffness
whilst retaining the necessary bending stiffness thus avoiding vertical deformation of the
casting and the resultant strain in the mortar.
2. Rib Positioning
The positioning of the ribs plays a critical role in reducing the risk of cracking the bedding
material due to frame deflection. The position opposite the cover seating areas reduces the
risk of deformation and ensures that impact to the surrounding materials is limited.
3. Bonding Ribs
The increased contact area provided by the rib design significantly improves the bonding
of the casting to the bedding material creating a greater resistance to lateral shift. The
improved bonding helps to avoid early separation and cracking of the bedding material
which can cause premature failure.
4. Flange Stiffness
The thickness of the flange at the corners prevents bending caused by dynamic loading from
the wheel. The prevention of bending in this area reduces the disturbance of the bedding
material.

Historically, traditional access covers were
designed and manufactured with just one
objective in mind - road performance and
longevity. This unfortunately has had an adverse
effect on the kilogram unit weight and the design
methodology facilitating the covers’ removal from the frame, which
ultimately, allows for safe access to the chamber.
However, in today’s legislative environment, where the employer has
to ensure the safety and welfare of the employee at work, PAM has
taken access cover safety design to a higher level.
The Health & Safety Environment● Manual Handling
More than a quarter of the accidents reported each year to the
enforcing authorities, are associated with manual handling. The vast
majority of of these result from an “Over 3 days” injury. The most
common types of injury are sprains and strains - often to the back.
● Back injury
The most common cause of back injury is:
i) The operative’s poor posture when lifting
ii) The excessive repetition of the lift
Many of the manual handling injuries are cumulative rather than
being truly attributable to any single handling incident.
● Access Cover Removal
Effective upkeep of today’s sewerage and telecommunications networks demands a regular
checking and maintenance programme. This obviously has an effect on the number of access
covers the operative has to remove in any working day.
It is the regularity associated with traditional access cover removal that can expose the operative
to the possibility of a repetitive strain injury (RSI), which can result in physical impairment or even
permanent disability over a period of time.
PAM has taken these factors into account and a lengthy research programme has resulted in the
development of an “ergonomically positive” range of access covers that “fits the product to the
person”.

E+ feature, the trademark is

Failure of the cementitious bedding
mortar was found to be a principle cause of
failure of road ironwork installations. Cracking
of bedding material caused the ironwork to
become loose. Cracking occurred due to a
number of factors:● Shrinkage of the mortar during installation.● Mortar having insufficient strength. Both
compressive and tensile strain is built up
during loading.● Installation opened to traffic too early.● Differential stiffness between the manhole
chamber and the surrounding road.● Movement of the frame and flange of the
casting under dynamic loading.● Failure of the bond/adhesion between the
casting and mortar giving rise to separation.
An understanding of the behaviour of the
ironwork under loading and the subsequent
load transfer was developed along with the
quantification of the strength (compressive
and tensile) requirements of a bedding
material.
PAM’s engineers in collaboration with SBD
Limited (manufacturers of specialist
construction mortars) have now developed
the new LTS feature designed to increase the
long term performance of an ironwork
installation. This includes Iron Interaction
Polyester Resin Manhole Bedding Mortar which
has been purpose designed to provide:● Long-term strength● Resistance to shrinkage● Long term durability● Optimum workable properties● Early site opening● Consistency of performance
Used in combination with products that
incorporate the LTS frame design feature, the
new Iron Interaction Polyester Resin Manhole
Bedding mortar will reduce the incidence of
premature failure and improve the long term
performance of an ironwork installation.
Strength properties
The Nottingham research identified and
quantified the required strength to withstand
the dynamic loading of a vehicle wheel. The
Iron Interaction bedding mortar exceeds this
performance level in both compression and
tensile load.
Optimum workable properties
Ease of installation is an important
element in ensuring good site practice. The
bedding mortar has been designed to allow
enough working time to set the manhole and
a ‘slump’ to give easy manipulation during
bedding preparation.
Durability
Resistance is excellent to environmental
conditions found in the highway. The mortar is
resistant to the action of frost. It will not react
chemically with de-icing salts. It has a low
permeability which prevents damage to
ironwork by chloride ingress.
Material Specification
The table below indicates the general
properties of the material. The material is
available in two grades:

Using the following set of criteria to
determine the type of use that a casting may
undergo during its life will help the specifier
choose the correct casting:
Speed: Restricted or de-restricted areas?
Volume: Density of traffic. Continuous or
sporadic?
Type: Lorries, cars, buses etc?
Road: Inter-city road, urban, estate, rural?
Placement Wheel tracks, verge etc?
Location Bend, junction roundabout etc?
Zone: Accelerating, decelerating or constant
speed zone?
Future: Likely development of area?
All of these criteria will affect the
performance of the installation as different
types of loading occur on the casting in the
dynamic environment that they are utilised.
The Traffic Intensity system designates
castings as either High Intensity (H), Normal
Intensity (N) or Low Intensity (L) and choice
can be made dependent on the severity of
the determining criteria.● NEW - Introducing the ergonomically
positive feature. The new specification
software will include criteria whereby you
can create a more accurate selection
given not just the area of installation but
the application and the operational
frequency the product will be subject to
throughout its life.
The benefits of using this type of selection
criteria:● Aids the selection of the optimum casting
for a given installation and application.● Removes the risk of minimum
performance castings being installed.● Removes the need for local knowledge.● Increases confidence in the selection
process.
The Nottingham University research
highlighted the need for a more modern
approach to the specification of products.
Many engineers highlighted the increasing
difficulty in specifying castings with the
‘optimum’ performance for a given
application. EN124 only gives minimum
performance requirements which are not
always suitable for the UK market.
It is recognised that there is a number of
different D400 castings available on the UK
market and engineers need a sensible way of
ensuring that correct one is chosen for the
application. Simply stating ‘D400’ as the
criteria will inevitably lead to low specification
castings being used.
Currently in the UK the major
manufacturers differentiate castings by the
use of ‘Road Type’ e.g. Trunk roads, city roads,
estate roads etc. This is a very limiting factor
and will not ensure that the optimum casting
is used. This process also relies on local
knowledge which is increasingly unavailable
as more work is undertaken by engineering
consultancies who may not be located in the
vicinity of the scheme.
Traffic Intensity specification
PAM has introduced the “Traffic Intensity”
system to help the engineer to specify the
optimum choice of casting for any given road
application.
Typical example of Traffic Intensity rating found alongside product brand name:

In addition to the standard group classifications detailed in BS EN124, it is recommended that the
following criteria should be taken into account when selecting the most suitable product:● The traffic stresses and specific load dynamics on the ironwork● The number of inspections required
Traffic Stresses and Load DynamicsBS EN124 is of minimal assistance in guiding a specifier to the correct specification given the
load dynamics of the actual installation, it is recommended that the following method is applied
when selecting the appropriate access cover.
For example, the dynamic loads placed on a D400 cover would be different on a busy ‘A’ road
when compared to a built-up area where speed is restricted. In addition, braking areas such as the
approaches to traffic lights, junctions or turning circles affect the actual loading of the ironwork.
PAM has designed a range of covers that accommodate the various forms of dynamic loading
occurring on our roads today. The D400 Class is segmented as follows:
Operational FrequencyEfficient management of the sewerage and telecommunications networks requires more
frequent inspections and checks. With this in mind, PAM has designed an ergonomically positive
range of access covers that will allow an operative to use the unit both frequently and safely.

Inter-Ax also features a fibre-optic ‘point of
drilling’ hole in the cover, avoiding the
underside cover webs to provide access into
the sewer for fibre-optic cameras.
The LTS design eliminates the traditional
‘grouting hole’ which was found to increase
the strain in the mortar if positioned incorrectly.
Holes are provided in non critical areas to aid
lifting or provide bolt holes to secure the
frame to the manhole chamber.
Specification and selection of the Inter-Ax
range is made simple by using the Traffic
Intensity Specification and Selection software.
University research
The Inter-Ax product range was developed following an extensive three year research
programme. The research was conducted by the University of Nottingham in conjunction with The
Department Of Transport, Scott Wilson Pavement LImited and PAM Access Covers and Gratings.
Objectives
The objectives were “to fully understand the mechanism of failure of ironwork installations”
and to determine what actions could be taken to remedy them.
The research consisted of three main elements:● Real life installations● Laboratory trials using purpose-built test-rig● Finite element analysis
Conclusions
The research concluded that the road ironwork installations failed prematurely because of the
following:● Traditional cementitious bedding mortar being unsuitable for ironwork installations● Movement of manhole cover frame under dynamic loading● Wrong products being specified and selected
Product feaures
The Inter-Ax range of traditional
lift covers has been developed
with the research conclusions in
mind and incorporates the new
LTS feature.
The Inter-Ax range has been specifically
engineered to cope with all the varying traffic
loadings encountered on today’s busy
highways.
The D400 products are marked with one
of the following “traffic intensity markers” to
simplify specification and selection of the
most appropriate casting:
‘H’ for High traffic intensity
locations
‘N’ for Normal traffic intensity
locations
‘L’ for Low traffic
intensity locations
All the Inter-Ax range has been developed
for use with the PAM Iron Interaction Bedding
Mortar.

Continued research into the area of safe
cover removal stimulated by ever increasing
legislation resulted in the development of
Tri-Glide, a range of ductile iron one man-
operable D400 covers and frames with a
unique slide-out action for safe, easy opening.
This range of ‘user-friendly’ covers was
developed mainly to help the client and
associated contractors meet these tougher
health and safety requirements by the
incorporation of a number of forward-thinking
design features.
Features
The patented slide principle and inverted
‘V’ 3 point suspension designed with increased
seating area for maximum stability, all
contribute to make Tri-Glide one of the most
ergonomically positive covers available.● Dual directional ramps located within the
frame act as runners for the cover and
stiffen the frame to prevent movement
under dynamic load.● Sliding action facilitates a quick inspection
of underground services without the need to
remove the covers completely.● Integrated keyhole and prising slot enables
easy removal of debris allowing the key to
be fully inserted prior to commencing the
lifting operation.● Keyholes located adjacent to the cover
edge, eliminate the need to stretch in order
to engage the lifting key.
Research and Analysis
Research conducted in association with
North West Water by the University of Salford’s
movement analysis laboratory demonstrated
that:● One operative required to remove a
Tri-Glide cover is at far less risk of back injury
than EITHER OF THE TWO people required to
remove a traditional access cover. In fact,
the stresses which can lead to back injuries
such as slipped discs are reduced by a third.● The research also revealed that the duration
of the lift with Tri-Glide is reduced as the cover
only needs to be lifted to the frame edge
from where it can be moved clear of the
frame by the patented sliding action. In
comparison, traditional covers need to be
lifted clear of the frame before the lift is
complete.● Opening Tri-Glide allows for more
symmetrical body positioning. The operative
is thereby protected from the rotational forces
that occur during traditional cover-lifting
procedures causing further spinal
compression. The research demonstrated
that the compressive and torsional forces on
the most vulnerable area of the lower back
(L5-S1: the joint of the fifth lumber vertebra
and first sacral vertebra) are significantly less
with Tri-Glide than the conventional 2 person
cover. The mean axial compression was also
found to be 35% lower with Tri-Glide in
comparison with the traditional cover.
Compressive forces are potentially the most
injurious to the spinal column, as they squeeze
the soft centre of the disc cushioning the
vertebra, encouraging posterior disc bulge
(more commonly known as “Slipped Disc”).
The Salford University report is availableupon request from Saint-Gobain Pipelines.
NOTE: The study was undertaken using 9 male
subjects, ranging in age, weight and height.
Of these 5 were network controllers from
North-West Water regularly involved in handling
manhole covers.
Ergonomic Lifting
In order to maximise the manual handling
benefit of the patented Tri-Glide cover system,
PAM has developed a revolutionary lifting key.
The new key design will offer the operative
a number of benefits including:● Greater compliance with manual handling
regulations (1992) through a reduction in
compressive forces which can lead to
spinal injury.● Improved safety through the provision of
a more stable foot position during the initial
stages of the lifting manoeuvre.

The Opt-Emax range has been specifically
developed to offer quicker, easier and safer
access to underground services. Opt-Emax
hinged covers offer many benefits over
traditional lift-out covers, without
compromising performance - thanks to the
LTS feature within the design of the frame.
The Opt-Emax range is ergonomically
positive and offers all the benefits associated
with the E+ feature.
LTS featuresLarge Corner Webs
The flange has been optimised so that there is
an increased area where the load is
concentrated, giving a reduction of
measurable strain between 30% to 50% in the
bedding.
Bonding RibsRib design significantly improves bonding to
the bedding material creating a greater
resistance to lateral shift. This helps avoid early
separation and cracking of the bedding
material which can cause premature failure.
Rib Positioning
Positioning of the ribs plays a critical role in
reducing the risk of cracking the bedding
material. The position opposite the cover
seating areas reduces the risk of frame
deflection and ensures that impact to the
surrounding materials is limited.
Flange Stiffness
The thickness of the flange at the corners
prevents bending caused by dynamic
loading. Prevention of bending in this area
reduces disturbance of the bedding material.

lift the cover slightly to clear the retaining
shoulder, then close. (The covers cannot
close accidentally as they MUST be lifted over
the shoulder at the 90° position.
(See column to right : “Closing Sequence”.)
Simple removal
To allow safe access to the chamber,
each cover can be easily lifted out when
moved to the 90° position.
(See column to left : “Removal”.)
Other Opt-Emax FeaturesLocking option
Opt-Emax can be locked if required and
locks can be fitted retrospectively.
Three-point seating
Three-point suspension seating design
gives long-term performance and stability in
today’s traffic conditions.
Ergonomically positive (E+)Effective upkeep of today’s networks
demands a regular checking and
maintenance programme. This has an effect
on the number of access covers the
operative has to remove in any working day.
It is the regularity associated with
traditional access cover removal that can
expose the operative to the possibility of a
repetitive strain injury (RSI), which can result in
physical impairment or even permanent
disability over a period of time.
Reduced risk of injury
The hinged mechanism greatly reduces
the risk of back injury thanks to the reduced
effort required to open the covers.

The Watershed gully grate has been
developed to meet the needs of engineers
and the rigors of todays traffic loadings.
Watershed offers ease of maintenance
with its prising slot for quick opening and
hinged action.
Watershed combines the benefits of both
double triangular and hinged grates in one
unit. Thanks to its wedge seating, Watershed
provides non-rock performance and the
captive hinge allows fast and easy access.
Manufactured from ductile iron the
Watershed utilises the wedge seat principle.
The Watershed wedge seating operates in
two directions and has seats to ensure the
security and location of the grate within the
frame.

Product FeaturesThe results of the tests are as follows:
1) Multi-directional Flood Deflector
It was established that the directional
deflectors facilitated the breaking up of the
water “sheet” as it hit the grating, which in turn
improved on the amount of water that is
captured. The deflector design also allowed
for the more efficient dispersal of leaves that
can build up over the waterway area slots of
a traditional gully grate.
3) Safety Features
The Flat Squadra units can be rotated 90¯
within the frame.
This feature means that the grating can
be placed perpendicular to the flow of traffic
irrespective of the way the frame has been
installed.
2) Spring Bar Technology
The grating is seated in the frame using
two spring-lock mechanisms in ductile iron.
This technology has also been integrated with
Autolinea and Selecta product ranges
The Squadra was developed as a result of an extensive testing programme in an attempt to
establish the true characteristics of the water flowing over and into the gully grating.

Bolt Down Mild Steel Galvanised (MSG)
Seal Plates
Under surge conditions, pressure concen-
tration in access shafts can lead to covers
being forced out of manholes. In situations
where this may occur, PAM offers a bolt down
MSG seal plate for added security.
MSG seal plates are fixed inside the man-
hole frame and secured using eight set
screws. MSG seal plates are specially
designed to overcome problems of back
pressure experienced in sewer shafts up to 0.5
bar (equivalent to pressure of five metres
head of water).
Installation (MSG)
When installing the manhole frame it is
important that the bedding mortar does not
interfere with the bolt holes used to retain the
seal plate. Before installing the seal plate,
ensure the sealing gasket and surface of the
frame in contact with the gasket are lubricat-
ed using a soft soap. (The lubricant used for
Tyton pipe gaskets is also suitable). Washers
should be placed under each set screw
head. Set screws, wrapped with thread seal-
ing tape, should then be tightened evenly to
avoid possible distortion of the seal plate.
Note: Bolt down MSG seal plates cannot be
retrospectively fitted.
Push-fit Glass Re-inforced Plastic (GRP)
Seal Plates
GRP seal plates act as a protective barrier
against the egress of odours and the corrosive
properties of sewer gases, notably in countries
where the ambient temperature is high.
GRP push-fit seal plates are not capable
of performing under conditions of back pres-
sure.
Installation (GRP)
Push-fit GRP seal plates can be easily
installed with the frame in-situ, and are readily
removeable allowing fast access to shafts.
Note: Push-fit GRP seal plates may be retro-
spectively fitted in appropriate frames.
Safety Grids
Specially designed MSG safety grids rest
on the frames internal lip and are designed to
prevent the entry of objects into the sewer
shaft when work is being carried out.
Safety grids are of drop-in design for ease
of location in manhole frames and can be fit-
ted retrospectively. Bar type and mesh type
are available in appropriate frames.

The standard badges for manhole and

(Surface Water). For details of standard
badging for surface boxes, see individual
product pages and tables below.
Special Badging
Special badging of castings to individual
customer requirements is also available,
dependent on specific order quantities and
suitability of particular designs. Please consult
PAM’s Sales Department.
Ductile Iron Product Coating
PAM access covers and gratings are
supplied coated with cold applied black
bitumen as standard. Castings may be
supplied uncoated on request (Fine Cast).
Bitumen acts to protect casting surfaces
whilst in transit and on the stockground. In
situations where castings are subjected to
regular vehicular traffic the coating on the top
surface of the casting will become worn. This
has no adverse effect on the casting’s
performance.

Bearer barSide frame only. Used in pairs on ducts and channel gratings.
Captive hingeIntegral hinge which prevents total removal of cover or grating.
Chequer plateNon-skid pattern on top surface of covers.
Clear openingNominal unobstructed access opening in a frame neglecting minor incursions. In the case of ductcovers & linear gratings the clear opening is the duct or channel width x the unit length x the numberof units used. (See illustration ‘duct covers’)
CorbalingStaggering of brickwork below frame to reduce final gully/manhole opening size to that of the frame.
Double sealTraditionally double vertical tongue in groove relationship between cover with double rim and framewith double groove. Allows double grease seal against egress of odour limits ingress of rainwater.
Double triangularCovers or gratings formed from two triangular sections giving stable seating under load and non-rockperformance.
Duct coverCovers and frames where frame is two bearer bars (side frames) enabling units to be fitted end toend to cover cable or pipe ducts where access may be required at any point.
End hingedHinge at end at 90° to kerb. See LEFT and RIGHT HAND OPENING.
Ergonomically positive (E+)Features attributed to products that offer Health & Safety manual handlng benefits to the operativeand supplier. (See Page 12)
Flat topCover top surface is all iron i.e. non-recessed.
GRP seal platePlate acts as a protective barrier against sewer gases.
Kerb hingedHinge located at and parallel with the kerb.
Keyways (closed)Blind lifting holes in covers for lifting keys which prevent ingress of dirt and water.
Keyways (open)Lifting holes in covers for lifting keys.
Left hand openingHinged grating that opens from the left when viewed from the pavement. Standard for the U.K. ontwo-way roads as would be closed by oncoming traffic.
Load Transfer System (LTS)Load Transfer System - design of frame that reduces the strain in the bedding material enhancingironwork installation performance and life. (See Page 11)
Loosely coupledThe two half covers/gratings of double trrangular units are connected together loosely by nuts & boltsor pins. This prevents the units being dropped in the shaft during lifting and, being a loose connec-tion, still allows the two half covers/gratings to bed independently and retain their non-rock facility.
MSG seal plate (bolt down)Mild Steel Galvanised plate for fixing inside manhole frame and capable of withstanding 0.5 bar
back-pressure.
72
G l o s s a r y
Non-rockCover/grating and frame design which gives quiet stable seating by means of 3 point non-rock seat-ing, i.e. double triangular. Machined seatings (Pametic) and gasket seatings (Ax-S 400) are other non-rock designs. A requirement of BS EN124 Class D400.
Pressure tightCover and frame which can withstand internal pressure as in surcharged drain systems. Obtained byuse of bolt down MSG sealplate as in Inter-Ax, machined seating as in Pametic or units with sealingrings and bolt down cover as with Pamtight. No pressure tight unit can be sealed retrospectively.
Prising slotSlot in cover edge or occasionally on inside of frame that allows the use of a crow bar to loosen cov-ers before removal.
Recessed coverTop of cover recessed to allow infilling with a chosen material, concrete, quarry tiles etc., usually tomatch the surrounding area. Note most iron covers have a shallow recess and may not be suitablefor use with pavior blocks.
Right hand openingHinged grating that opens from the right when viewed from the pavement. In the U.K. would be usedon offside of one-way streets. Traffic islands etc. as would be closed by oncoming traffic.
Safety gridA frabricated galvanised mild steel grid, which normally drop fits onto the frame below the cover toprevent covers and other objects being dropped into the shaft.
Seal plate (bolt down)Galvanised mild steel plate, fitted with a gasket, which is bolted to the frame to prevent egress ofodours and which may limit the ingress of water. Capable of withstanding a back pressure of 0.5bar.Cannot be fitted retrospectively.
Seal plate (push-fit)Glass re-inforced plastic (GRP) plate, fitted with gasket, which is a push fit into the frame and preventsegress of odours and which may limit the ingress of water and, especially in countries with high ambi-ent temperature, acts as a barrier against the corrosive properties of the sewer gases. Not capableof sealing under back pressure. May be fitted retrospectively.
SealedCovers and frames which are sealed in some way to at least prevent the egress of odours from thesewer. There are different methods of sealing and these give varying standards of performance.See DOUBLE SEAL, SINGLE SEAL, SEAL PLATES AND PRESSURE TIGHT.
SeatingBearing/contact area between cover and frame. Also type or contact:Three point seating: Non-rock seating; Machined seating; Gasket (rubber) seating
Single PieceCover/grating comprises one piece.
Single sealTraditionally single vertical tongue in groove relationship between cover with single rim and frame withsingle groove. Allows single grease seal against egress of odour llimits ingress of rainwater. Also seeSEAL PLATE.
Slide outCover removed by lifting one end then sliding out rather than direct vertical lift. Reduces the effortneeded for removal.
Ventilated coverOpenings within cover allow free circulation of air within the shaft and prevent pressure build-up.Minimum vented area is specified in BS EN124.
Waterway areaFree area of grating which allows the passage of water. (i.e. Total area of slots).

Before beginning any reinstatement work it
is recommended that a site assessment is
carried out. This can often save considerable
time on site through improved planning. The
assessment should identify
i. Type of reinstatement required
ii. Whether or not a new cover or grating is
required. If a new unit is required then the size
and type of unit should be identified. This
should include the frame depth of the existing
unit as it is quicker and more cost effective to
replace the old unit with one of equivalent
frame depth. This will save having to build up
the chamber in order to bring the cover to
road height.
iii. The extent of work required. This should
include any repairs required to the brick
chamber, the urgency of the work required,
whether a short term emergency repair is
required and an estimate of how long the
work will take.
There are currently many different
bedding materials available in the market
place. The factors governing the choice of
material are:● Long term strength properties● Resistance to shrinkage● Optimum working properties● Early site opening● Consistency of performance
To meet all of the necessary requirements
PAM recommends the use of Polyester Resin
Manhole Bedding Mortar. This
recommendation arises from a 3 year
research programme, in conjunction with
Nottingham University, Scott Wilson Pavement
Engineering Ltd and the Department of
Transport, to investigate the premature failure
of road ironwork installations.
The research revealed that the main
cause of premature failure was the cracking
of the bedding material, causing the ironwork
to become loose. In order to remedy this
problem, a greater understanding of the load
transfer mechanism, and the interaction
between the ironwork, mortar and surrounding
ground was first developed.
From this the revised performance
specifications were defined.

C) Seat casting
Position casting frame
over the manhole
chamber and lamp
down tamp down to
ensure that the mortar
keys to the casting.
D) Level casting
Ensure that the casting is
level with the road
surface by placing a
straight edge across the
corners of the casting
onto the road. Frame
can be made level by tamping the frame
into the bedding material.
E) Check gaps under
flange
Ensure that there are no
visible gaps under the
flange and smooth
bedding material with
trowel both inside and
outside of chamber.
F) Envelope flange
Use, the remaining mortar
to envelope the flange
paying particular
attention to the corner
areas. Smooth out the
mortar with a trowel to
ensure good bonding with the casting and to
avoid any initial cracks in the bedding
material.
G) Backfill
Check that the bedding material has
hardened and backfill with asphalt. Ensure
that the asphalt is properly compacted.
Installation in new roads
When installing covers in new roads, where the
road surface has not yet been applied,
embedment is made easier. Simply follow
Stage 2: Material selection and Stage 4:
Installation.

A) Excavate ironwork
Remove old ironwork
ensuring that all cracked
asphalt is removed from
surrounding area.
B) Clear and repair
brickwork
Clear brickwork of all
debris and old bedding
material. Check the
manhole chamber for
loose brickwork and
crumbling mortar. Replace any loose bricks
and repoint as necessary. Check that the
manhole frame will seat evenly.
When installing access covers with a 100mm
deep frame, rebuild the brickwork chamber to
a minimum level of 115mm below the
carriageway surface using at least Class B
engineering bricks (165mm below surface
using 150mm deep frame). Any bricks used
should have a compressive strength of not less
than 20N/mm
A) Mix material
Material is pre-blended in
controlled quantities. Pour
the liquid polyester resin
into a suitable container
followed by the powder
hardener component.
Using a mechanical mixer ensure that the
material is thoroughly mixed (wetted).
B) Bedding layer
Place layer of bedding
mortar on brickwork
approximately 25mm to
40mm in depth. Ensure
that enough coverage is
available to make
contact with the entire flange of the casting.
