Since we were established in 1948, the International Road Federation’s work has been anchored in a proud tradition of engineering excellence supported by a forward-looking vision of roads at the service of society. People and goods need to move for an economy to grow, for wealth to be created, for prosperity to be shared. Much as a dynamic economy depends on the movement of goods and services, people rely on roads to access employment, education and health services. Or, as we like to put it “Better Roads. Better World”.

However, the intuition of my predecessors was that road investments had to be accompanied by a continuous flow of new ideas and knowledge, leading to safer, cleaner, more resilient, and better connected transportation systems.

As a leading industry organization, we understand the importance of setting a long term agenda for education, advocacy and knowledge.

We have invested to expand IRF’s global suite of training programs and knowledge resources, while making them available to a wider community of road and transport professionals ensuring our role as the industry’s most trusted brand in continuing education.

Through our awards program, we continue to promote innovations and the successes in our industry, and provide a forward-looking road map for IRF members, partners, and stakeholders to follow.

We aren’t just building tomorrow’s transportation infrastructure; we are also building leadership skills through the IRF Fellowship Program.

Overcoming the sector’s increasingly complex mobility challenges will require new cooperation models between all actors. By bringing together the private sector, academia and public agencies under the same roof, IRF remains the organization where industry partnerships can be built.

The IRF Global Road Achievement Awards (GRAA) is a one-of-a kind competition to recognize innovative road projects and exemplary people that place the road industry at the forefront of worldwide social and economic development.

Instituted in 2000, the Awards have distinguished more than 120 programs, projects and products from around the world. Today, the Awards are recognized as a prestigious industry accolade in their own right, but they also serve to remind a much wider audience that the mobility everyone takes for granted would not be possible without the talent and commitment of our industry.

IRF views the awards as an important way to promote road innovation around the world and will make substantial efforts to see that the awarded achievements receive maximum worldwide publicity, including a presentation of a crystal trophy at the IRF Annual Awards Dinner and recognition in industry publications.

BROADEN YOUR KNOWLEDGE HORIZON

Since its establishment in 1948, the IRF’s primary purpose has been to transfer the latest technologies and knowledge from those who have it to those who need it, and in doing so, promote an agenda of shared prosperity that flows from accessible, affordable and sustainable road networks. As the road sector’s tools and procedures evolve to meet society’s new needs, the availability of global knowledge resources such as those provided by IRF is now more important than ever.

The IRF Examiner [ISSN 2411-3867 (Print), ISSN 2411-3875 (Online)] is a freely available periodical journal published by the International Road Federation featuring peer-reviewed technical papers by leading industry professionals.

The IRF Examiner directly supports the IRF’s stated mission of creating a global marketplace of knowledge in support of informed policies and effective programs.

IRF e-Learning Webinars offer an excellent overview of the international state of the art and regulatory environment across a range of road and transportation topics. They also provide an introduction to the discussion topics and coursework covered in the traditional courses. IRF e-Learning Webinars are typically structured as a 60-90-minute presentation, followed by a Q&A with the registrants.

IRF members have on-demand access to a full library of e-learning webinars covering all major road disciplines and are able to suggest and present at upcoming webinars.

INVEST IN FUTURE LEADERS

The IRF Fellowship Program was established in 1949 as a catalyst for educational and professional achievement by students of transportation disciplines. It occupies a unique position in the industry, having supported nearly 1,500 students from 114 countries, many of whom have returned to successful careers in academia, industry and the political sphere.

The support provided by the program has substantially changed the lives of many alumni, providing access to academic credentials and professional networks which would otherwise have remained out of reach. The program has also directly benefited the wider network of IRF member organizations by providing in-country contact points and sources of information.

In 2015, Nexco West introduced a moveable barrier system in Japan, creating safer work zones along the Joban Expressway, north of Tokyo, thanks to an encounter between an IRF member and an IRF Fellow.

“IRF has instilled knowledge, networking contacts, and most importantly a passion for transportation that I would have never gained elsewhere.”

Morgan Morris, IRF Fellow & Class Captain (2019)

Morgan’s participation in the IRF Road Scholar Program was enabled through a named grant by Transpo Industries
