WHY NEW VRINDABAN IS SO SPECIAL
New Vrindaban is named after the holy land of Vrindavan in
India where Lord Krishna, the Supreme Lord, resided more than
five thousand years ago. Till today, Vrindavan is a pilgrimage
site for thousands of Krishna devotees from all over the world
who pursue the path of devotion to God.
In 1965, Srila Prabhupada, an elderly monk and an astute
scholar of the ancient Vedic scriptures, came to the United
States to share the knowledge of God from these primeval
texts. In a few years he spread the name of “Hare Krishna”
throughout America, giving people a universal message of
connecting with God through the chanting of God’s names.
In 1968, when Srila Prabhupada heard about a 133-acre
plot of land in the lush countryside of West Virginia, he was
reminded of Krishna’s holy land of Vrindavan and suggested
that his followers excavate and work on the land and build the
first Hare Krishna self-sufficient community in the West. “Why
not import Vrindavan to your country,” he said, “just as you
have New York, New England, and so many ‘New’ duplicates
of European countries in the USA?” Thus, New Vrindaban
became a holy place, born from Srila Prabhupada’s eagerness
to create a pilgrimage site in the West, giving people, from all
backgrounds, the opportunity to connect with God in a mood
of love and devotion, called Bhakti-yoga.

SRILA PRABHUPADA’S VISION: OUR MISSION
Srila Prabhupada boldly envisioned New Vrindaban as a sacred
village that would be known worldwide for cow protection,
simple living, holy pilgrimage, spiritual education, and, above
all, loving Krishna.
This vision has manifested, and now, after fifty years,
New Vrindaban continues to preserve these ideals and
have undertaken several projects to further implement Srila
Prabhupada’s vision for a God conscious society. Plans to
build seven more temples are underway, which will fulfill
Srila Prabhupada’s vision of making New Vrindaban an
extraordinary pilgrimage site in the West.

SRILA PRABHUPADA’S PALACE OF GOLD The Preeminent Memorial Shrine of ISKCON’s Founder-Acharya
In the late 1960s the New Vrindaban community wanted to build a home
for their spiritual master as an offering of love and appreciation and a
tribute to Srila Prabhupada’s life and legacy.
From a simple blueprint, the novice devotee architects and
builders created a stunning masterpiece, Srila Prabhupada’s Palace of
Gold, considered by leading media networks as the “Taj Mahal of the
West” and one of the “eight religious wonders to see in the US.” The
Palace boasts 22-karat gold-leaf lattice work and domes, exquisite
marble work, spectacular stained-glass artwork, intricately carved
teakwood, superbly crafted terraces, and plush gardens and lawns. Srila
Prabhupada’s followers considered their humble attempts as the will of
Krishna to glorify His pure devotee.
The Palace of Gold is Srila Prabhupada’s first memorial shrine in
the West, which preserves some of his personal memorabilia. Every year
the Palace attracts thousands of guests, pilgrims, and devotees from all
over the world to congregate, glorify, and worship Lord Krishna and His
pure devotee.

WHO IS SRILA PRABHUPADA
His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, affectionately
called Srila Prabhupada, is the Founder-Acharya (spiritual master) of
The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). He set
out from India in 1965 at the age of 69, with only meager belongings
and a few volumes of ancient Vedic texts, ready to transmit its timeless
spiritual teachings to the West. Soon, from a small storefront temple in
New York City, a movement blossomed all over the world. In twelve years,
Srila Prabhupada circled the globe fourteen times, met with scholars
and statesmen, and inspired men and women from all walks of life to
take to Krishna Consciousness. Hundreds of temples and many schools,
restaurants, and farm communities on all continents developed under
his guidance. New Vrindaban is the first farming community that was
born from Srila Prabhupada’s divine vision and inspiration. It embodies
the sublime Vedic culture and heritage and Srila Prabhupada’s desire
of propagating simple living with God in the center. Srila Prabhupada
visited New Vrindaban four times, and many years after he departed
from this world, New Vrindaban remains his home. One can still feel his
presence here.
ABOUT ISKCON
The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) is a world-
wide movement founded by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami
Prabhupada and dedicated to the philosophy and practice of Krishna
Consciousness, which is also known as Bhakti-yoga. In this ancient
monotheistic practice, dating back thousands of years, the Absolute
Truth, the source of all life, is understood to be a person. He is one, but in
different faiths He is known by different names. One of His many names
is Krishna, meaning “all attractive.” The foundational tenets of Bhak-
ti-yoga are that we are spiritual beings, infinitesimal parts of Krishna,
who are meant to connect with Him in love and devotion. Chanting God’s
names connects us with Him, as described in all scriptures of the world.
This understanding and practice awaken our true self and allows us to
develop our personal, loving relationship with God, Krishna.
We chant the Hare Krishna Maha-mantra (the great mantra for
deliverance) that invokes God’s presence:
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare HareHare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

OUR GUIDING PRINCIPLES FROM THE BHAGAVAD-GITA (SACRED “SONG OF GOD”):
EQUAL VISION (Sama Darshana)—As spiritual souls, we are all
equal in the eyes of God, irrespective of the external covering of
the body. This soul-vision removes the cataracts of illusion, and
we can see all equally, from man to plant to beast. Thus, we treat
every living being with dignity. With this equal vision, there can
be social cohesion and unity in diversity.
WITHOUT CRUELTY (Natihimsa)—Our happiness may be
important but not at the cost of anyone else’s. Therefore, we
cultivate compassion that leads to kindness for all living beings.
We follow a vegetarian diet, live in harmony with God’s creation,
and work for the spiritual welfare of all beings.
HUMILITY (Amanitva)—Humility is not an easy pill to swallow
and seldom sought after, but when we recognize that we have a
lot more to learn and experience and we are servants of God, we
become humble and have God’s greatness behind us. We then
give respect to others without expecting any in return.
CHOICE (Iccha)—Free will is a gift of God; He has given us the
independence and power to choose our thoughts and actions.
When we follow His instructions and choose to love Him, our free
will is properly utilized.
RIGHT ACTION (Dharma)—Dharma is the soul’s purpose, which
is to be a loving servant of God and to act for the benefit of others.
When we find our purpose, we are fulfilled and happy.
AFFECTION (Prithi)—Love is a verb. When we learn who God is
and why it is impossible not to love Him, we will naturally serve
and love all in His creation.
After you tour the Palace of Gold, you are invited to
visit the Krishna Temple down the road and experience
its exotic beauty and worship ceremonies. Enjoy a
vegetarian meal at Govinda’s restaurant and snack
bar or partake of our free breakfast and lunch meals at
the temple. Visit the cow barn, interact with the cows,
and watch the milking. Relax in our gardens or stroll
along the lotus-filled lakes. Go on the Peacock Walk
and admire the peacocks and wildlife. There is plenty
to do at New Vrindaban.
Enjoy your visit, and we hope to see you again soon.
