To meet this growing student population, Wintec continues to expand and improve its facilities and services; from the award winning Gallagher Hub and the new A Block to the opening of the Avalon Campus Student Hub. During 2010 we will also open our fantastic F Block which will support our local business agencies. The city is also home to the V8 motorsport event each year as well as international cricket and music shows. It’s a lively, young city well suited to meeting your needs and is gaining a reputation as an international student city.

Hamilton HighlightsHome to over 46,000 tertiary students every year, Hamilton is a great place to study and have fun. The largest inland city in New Zealand, it offers all the benefits of a big city without the hassles of big city living. Access to the CBD is no more than a 20 minute drive from the outskirts of the city, even in peak hour traffic. This allows you more leisure time to enjoy the wonderful attractions and activities in and around the city during your time here.

Hamilton Gardens is one of New Zealand’s most renowned tourist destinations. Here, you will experience a unique journey exploring garden designs that have been authentically recreated from their country of origin. Enjoy the living Persian carpet in the Indian Char Bagh garden, the tranquillity of the Japanese and Chinese gardens, the romantic English garden and the grand Italian Renaissance garden.

In the heart of Hamilton’s cultural precinct, the Waikato Museum delivers a rich experience of the arts and culture of the region. Get engaged by science, reminisce with history and let art scintillate your creative taste buds with an experience that can continue with a short walk next door to ArtsPost, where you can immerse yourself in the contemporary art scene.

Meet some of Hamilton’s most entertaining and engaging characters at Hamilton Zoo! Stroll through the park-like grounds, meet the keepers, get up close and personal with an animal encounter or let the wings of endangered birds soar over your heads as you wander through the native plants and trees of the Southern Hemisphere’s largest freeflight sanctuary.

View Hamilton’s ever-changing vista along the walkway bordering the Waikato River and stretching the length of the city. The city is so close, you can stroll up to one of the many cafés, restaurants and bars all located within walking distance from each other. And because we are a student city you will usually find some great student deals and specials. Those in need of indulgent retail therapy are in good hands with a world

of choice. The European inspired Casabella Lane offers diverse boutiques and eateries, while nearby Ward and Victoria Streets offer an array of high-end fashion stores and malls.

At night, whether you’re after intimate dining or a casual drink catching up with friends, Hamilton’s cafés, restaurants and bars will spoil you for choice. The Hood Street hub is studded with the best of everything for a good night out. From catching a movie, bar hopping or attending the theatre there is no end of entertainment in the city.

In the weekend, your leisure time could be spent doing a variety of activities in and around the region. These could include rock climbing, caving, getting behind-the-scenes to encounter more about The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy or chilling out in the coastal town of Raglan, home to one of the world’s longest left-hand surf breaks.

New ZealandNew Zealand is a beautiful country in the South Pacific, with a well deserved reputation for friendly people and a clean and natural environment. Divided into two main islands, New Zealand is a land of stunning contrasts – from magnificent snowy mountains in the South Island through to golden beaches, beautiful bush and pastures in the North. These are combined with the convenience and excitement of modern high-technology cities. Our clean, healthy and safe environment offers a perfect place for study and leisure.

ClimateHamilton enjoys a relatively warm climate with warm unpolluted air. Summers are warm with temperatures ranging from 20-28 degrees Celsius. Winters are generally mild, averaging between 10-15 degrees Celsius, with an occasional morning frost.

HamiltonHamilton is New Zealand’s newest metropolitan city and one of the fastest growing, with a current population of 141,000 people. Attendance at one of these sessions is compulsory for all international students new to Wintec, whether you are post graduate or an undergraduate student. You are required to register your presence at one of the induction programmes at the commencement of your study. It is therefore important that you book your travel arrangements to ensure that you arrive prior to these dates. The Student Enrolment and Information Centre (SEIC) provides services that support the educational purpose, quality assurance policies and academic operations of Wintec. If you need assistance with any part of your enrolment at Wintec, our Student Enrolment and Information Centre should be your first place to visit. Our enrolment team is happy to help with your queries regarding our programmes, facilities or services. They will help you obtain forms and provide you with assistance in completing them.

International Fees and Expenses

Fees and ExpensesTuition fees range from $15,000 to $18,000 per year. You can visit our website: www.wintec.ac.nz/international for more information. Some programmes have additional expenses such as books, stationary, uniforms, catering equipment and assignment materials. Prices vary so please enquire on application to a programme. Text books would be between $75 - $110 each. Ask your agent for details.

Pay Your International Fees OnlinePayment of funds from outside New Zealand may be made by bank transfer to Wintec’s Custom House account. Wintec has set up accounts with banks in many countries worldwide. Sending your money to Wintec’s Custom House account provides a safe and fast payment method which also allows you to track the progress of your payment on the web.

Additional CostsIt is important that you pay for the full costs of all services requested along with your tuition fees payment. A receipt will only be issued once full payment has been received by Wintec. At the time of printing your total living expenses required per year for Visa purposes is $10,000 NZD.

Refund PolicyBy accepting a place in a programme or paying fees atWintec, a student enters a contract with Wintec for the periodof the programme. This means there is an obligation to paythe fee for one year or the length of the programme if lessthan one year. The refund policy is available on the website:www.wintec.ac.nz/international under ‘general information’.In the event of insufficient numbers of enrolments theprogramme may be cancelled and a refund will be given.

Medical and Travel Insurance

It is compulsory for international students to have appropriate and current medical and travel insurance while studying in New Zealand. If you are an international student entering New Zealand on a student visa, insurance must cover you from the day you leave your home country to the expiry date of your visa, plus one week.

Wintec will arrange comprehensive medical and travel insurance on your behalf, which meets all the requirements for international students while studying in New Zealand. By paying an annual premium of $510 (approximately) in additional to your tuition fees, and filling in the insurance application form with your date of departure from your home country, the medical travel insurance policy will automatically commence from the time you leave home. It will run to the expiry date of your visa plus one week or alternatively to the end of your course. There may be a small balance to pay to extend the policy to the expiry date of your visa or your course.

When you accept your offer you should fill in and return the insurance application form to Wintec and include approximate date of departure as your start date. The policy will be issued when you have paid. We can adjust the start date of the policy if you change your travel arrangements. If you are an international student already in New Zealand, the insurance must cover you from the date of your enrolment to the expiry date of your visa, plus one week. If you leave New Zealand before the expiry date of the insurance you may be entitled to a refund. You should contact Wintec to apply for a refund in the first instance. Alternatively, insurance can be purchased directly from Wintec’s special insurance brokers.

Education Services Waikato Ltd112c Lake Road, Hamilton 3204, New ZealandPhone: +64 7 839 5889Fax: +64 7 839 5890Mobile: +64 21 268 4723Email: [email protected]

Where insurance is provided by an overseas provider, students must give Wintec the policy wording and summary in English, to be assessed by the Wintec broker to ensure it complies with the Code of Practice for International Students, which gives the insurance requirements. See the Pre-Departure Guide for details at: www.wintec.ac.nz/files/internationalcentre/PreDepartureGuide.pdf. Proof of current Medical and Travel insurance is required before enrolment can be finalised.

Visas, Permits and Immigration

All international students must hold a valid student permit for the duration of their studies. Full details of visa and permit requirements, advice on rights to employment in New Zealand while studying and reporting requirements are available through the New Zealand Immigration Service and can be viewed on their website at www.immigration.govt.nz and you can find information on the long term skill shortage list (LTSSL).

Student Visas OnlineAn online service for Student Visa and Permit Renewal is available for Wintec’s international students. This service is provided in partnership with the New Zealand Immigration Service. Wintec students can access this service by applying through the Student Enrolment and Information Centre on Wintec’s City Campus. This is a very fast and efficient service and most students receive their visa label within 3 working days of applying. The other important benefit is that students are able to retain their passport during the application period. This service also allows for the processing of applications for changes from work or visitor permits to student permits. Students studying on most diplomas, all degrees or postgraduate studies are entitled to work for 20 hours per week during the academic year and all students studying on programmes longer than one year are entitled to work full time during the long summer break. Students graduating from 2-3 year diploma, undergraduate degrees and post-graduate studies are eligible for a one year graduate job search permit (open work permit). Students who are graduating from a course that could gain points under the skilled migrant category are also eligible for a one year graduate job search permit (open work permit). This applies to most of Wintec’s diplomas. The graduate job search permit (open work permit) allows students to look for work in the field of their expertise and, on obtaining a permanent job offer, international students with New Zealand qualifications are encouraged to apply for permanent residency.

enrolling at wintec studying at wintecAbout tuition feesQuoted tuition fees are an estimate only, based on a standard full-time load (1.0) and will vary depending on the student’s choice of courses (ie the actual enrolled load). Students should be aware that their tuition fees will be reduced or increased depending on the load of the course enrolled in. Wintec will endeavour to maintain these fees in future years but reserves the right to adjust when necessary.

For qualifications of one year or longer, the fees quoted are for one year of full-time study only. If students do more than a full-time programme in one year, the fees will be adjusted. All fees include GST (tax), registration and enrolment, counselling, learning support, and the use of most campus facilities. Nursing fees include clinical placement. Some courses incur extra costs related to required materials, tools or activities. This may be up to $1,000 additional to tuition fees. (See page 12 for Refund Policy.)

Transfer of creditThis is a process whereby you apply to Wintec (on the Application for Transfer of Credit form) to credit your prior learning from another tertiary provider towards the programme/ module(s) you intend to study at Wintec.

If you apply for a transfer of credit at the time of your programme application this can be assessed, and your offer letter and fees will reflect any transfer of credit awarded. Generally, fees for programmes of one year or less will not be reduced as there is requirement that international students are enrolled in a full-time programme of study. However, if you are in one of these programmes, and are granted a transfer of credit, the fee from this transfer of credit may be utilised by studying additional modules either in your area of study or in a complementary area.

Recognition of Prior LearningPrior learning from your life experience or on-the-job training can also be recognised toward some of Wintec’s qualifications. Recognition of prior learning is a process that acknowledges learning from informal training, work and/or life experience. The awarding of qualifications based on this informal learning is recognised internationally, as a valid educational process embedded with academic integrity. This process requires you to reflect on your experiences and prove how these have informed your learning and subsequent output. Recognised prior learning at Wintec is branded ‘elevate’.
