For the international student, James Madison University (JMU) is an exciting destination, where the ideals of American education – first-class teaching and a rich campus life with a strong sense of community – come together to offer an incredible experience.

Ready, set, go… We understand that studying in a foreign country can be challenging, so from your first day at JMU, the International Study Center (ISC) is here for you.
The JMU ISC is a dedicated facility just for international students. It is a place that welcomes you, supports you, and helps you to gain the skills, knowledge and perspectives you need to make the most of your new university life.
Studying at the ISC means that you will get the best of both worlds: the full JMU/all-American campus experience, plus the care of a supportive community that will help you adapt and thrive as an international student. And when you’re ready, you’ll join your chosen mainstream degree program, confident, capable and fully prepared for the challenges of a JMU education.

WHAT IS AN ISC PATHWAY PROGRAM?Do I study English language? Yes. Depending on your language level, you may take the 2-, 3-, or 4-semester International Year One (IY1) program at the ISC, which will include academic and - academic and English courses.
Do I study academic courses? Yes. You will take specialized academic courses that fully prepare you to enter the second year of your degree program.
Do I get academic credits for my degree? Yes. You will get a minimum of 24 academic credits for your degree upon successful completion of the credit-bearing courses offered at the ISC.
Do I get extra academic support and learn study skills? Yes. The ISC provides additional support to help you succeed academically.
After the ISC, do I continue into the second year of my degree program? Yes. Upon completion of the ISC, you will move into the second year of your degree program.
Will I graduate in four years? Yes. Depending on your program type, you will spend 8-16 months at the ISC and then the remaining three years (of your four- year program) completely integrated into the University.
Do I lose time at the ISC? No. You are able to graduate within four years, similar to direct entry students. Unlike studying an English-only program and then starting your first year of university studies, you can save both time and money at the ISC.
Do I pay more to get an American degree? No. You save money by studying at the ISC since you will study both English and academic courses within the standard suggested duration to complete the given degree program.
Is there an application fee? No. There is no JMU application fee for ISC applicants.
Do I get a university issued I-20? Yes, JMU issues the I-20 for visa purposes.
Do I take classes with American students? You will take cohort classes with other international students in the ISC, offering you dedicated attention and academic help. You will always take regular classes with American students once you finish the ISC and matriculate to full-time degree study at JMU.

INTERNATIONAL YEAR ONEThe International Year One includes specialized courses in American culture, English for Academic Purposes and study skills to help you adjust to U.S. teaching methods and resources. You’ll also take courses from year one of your chosen degree programs, allowing you to earn 24 credits, or more.

STUDENT SUCCESS CENTEROpened in September 2014, the center is the newest addition to JMU’s many resources that are dedicated to student success. It houses more than 20 support facilities including the University Health Center, the Office of Academic and Career Planning, and Learning Centers focused on helping students overcome challenges they may face.
LIBRARIESThe JMU Libraries include the Carrier Library, the Music Library and Rose Library. JMU librarians work with academic departments to provide subject-specific library instruction, research consultation, and to develop collections. The award-winning Information Literacy program provides students with skills for lifelong learning.

CAREER PLANNING Career and Academic Planning Resource Center From writing resumes and cover letters to searching for internships and jobs, the Career and Academic Planning Resource Center is here to help. It also sponsors a number of career fair events each year to provide students in all majors with the opportunity to interact with employers and find out about career options. More than 250 companies attended in recent years.
Career Guide to JMU Majors A guide to introduce you to some of the career options for each of the majors offered at JMU. It includes internship opportunities, characteristics of successful students, and websites for further guidance on potential careers.
Recruit-A-Duke JMU’s online platform, Recruit-a-Duke, enables you to register for internships, full-time jobs, career fairs, workshops, information sessions, and more.
Practice Interview Program Gain valuable experience interviewing with actual employers, without leaving the campus.
International Student Career Day (ISCD) ISCD is a one-day program specifically designed to help international students who are considering pursuing internships or jobs in the U.S. after graduation.
Interview StreamStudents can practice their interview techniques with Interview Stream, a web-based application that conducts free, online interviews with a webcam.

Welcome to the neighborhood. Convenient and comfortable accommodation is available on campus, and we advise all students at the International Study Center (ISC) to apply for a room. On-campus accommodation is limited, so if you are not assigned a room, or prefer to live off-campus, you can choose from a selection of luxurious but affordable housing nearby.
Off-campus housing North 38 Apartments are a great off-campus living option. The luxurious apartments are just 4km from campus on a bus route that JMU students can use for free. Shops, restaurants, parks and cinemas are all close by and the ISC can help you arrange your accommodation here.

A DINING EXPERIENCE
Cuisines from around the world. JMU has the #6 best campus food in the U.S. (Princeton Review, 2016) and with so much choice it’s easy to see why. From world-class coffee, desserts and snacks, to halal, kosher, vegetarian, American and Korean dishes, JMU’s 20 on-campus dining facilities offer something for every taste.
D-HUBKnown by the student population as D-Hub, JMU’s original buffet-style dining hall is an essential visit. The menu has a wide selection of savory and sweet options from different cuisines and cooking styles, including vegetarian and vegan alternatives.
E-HALLThe East Campus Dining Hall, or E-Hall, is a 700-seat modern buffet-style dining area that serves a variety of food from around the world: bakery, bistro, deli, grill, hearth oven, produce market and Tandoori International.
TOP DOG CAFÉTop Dog Café, a food-court style eatery, is a favorite with international students.
Four unique venues – Mongolian Grill, Sushi, Madison Bread Company, and Grille Works – offer an international mix of traditional stir-fry Asian dishes, sushi and sashimi, signature Italian-style Panini, and a wide variety of American dishes.
FESTIVALFound on JMU’s east-campus, Festival offers not only an impressive menu but also a beautiful view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Students can find traditional American food as well as Mediterranean and Chinese dishes in this food-court-style dining option.
RESTAURANTS AND CAFÉSIn addition to the selection of restaurants and food courts unique to the JMU campus, students can also find popular American restaurants and cafés such as Starbucks, Java City, Chick-fil-A, Einstein Bros. Bagels, and Quizno’s.
