Our International Foundation Year is a programme of academic subjects, study skills and English language training designed specifically to provide international students with a pathway to undergraduate degree study at the University of Surrey.

Tutors on International Foundation Year Programmes are experts in their subjects and specialists in university preparation. We will support you every step of the way to ensure you successfully complete the programme and progress to an undergraduate degree.

I’m doing the foundation course for civil engineering. I’m planning to do my civil engineering degree and in five to ten years, hopefully I can start my own company to build more houses and help develop my country.

The teaching style here is that they give you the basic knowledge and you study and understand it by yourself. All you have to do is ask your lecturers or your teachers about what you’re doing and ask how you can improve it. If you write an essay and you want to improve it, you can just show it to your tutors and they might be able to check it for you.

I’m probably doing a placement year. It gives you something to put on your CV when you want to go to work. So that would be a very helpful thing.

I go to Guildford every week and I go to London once a month or so. When I go to London I usually go out with my friends, have a nice meal and sometimes we visit friends of mine from Brunei.

One place I particularly like is the lakeside because you can just sit there for a while, you can relax and empty your mind. It’s a very nice area to spend your time and sometimes we can bring friends over and have barbecues next to the lake, which is really nice.

You have to be ready because school life and uni life are very different. You have to actually work and you have to actually take care of yourself. Join societies, make a lot of friends because those friends will help you a lot. Your friends are the most important things.

I’ve joined the Badminton Society. I’m going to be president of the Brunei Society next year. I’m also in the Chess Society as well.

Home to the £36 million Surrey Sports Park, more than 40 student sports teams and a comprehensive programme of support for elite athletes, the University of Surrey makes it easy to pursue your passion for sport.

If you’re tempted to turn your interest in sport into a career, our new Sport and Exercise Sciences degree has been designed to open doors to a wide range of options, from professional sport and health promotion to teaching and research.

With a strong foundation in biosciences, the programme considers the theoretical knowledge and practical application of scientific principles to maximise sports performance and improve general health and wellbeing through exercise.

Collaboration between the University of Surrey, the University of Strathclyde and the National Physical Laboratory will strengthen measurement science and create a new Postgraduate Institute.

The University of Surrey, along with the University of Strathclyde, has been selected to enter into a partnership with the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills (BIS) to lead the world-renowned National Physical Laboratory (NPL), a global centre of excellence in measurement science.

Many of our academics already work closely with colleagues at NPL, and our students benefit from this collaboration. NPL is the UK’s National Measurement Institute and has developed and maintained the nation’s primary measurement standards for more than a century.

NPL’s measurements help to save lives, protect the environment and enable citizens to feel safe and secure, as well as supporting international trade, companies and innovation.

An important focus of the partnership will be the establishment of a new Postgraduate Institute which will train high-calibre PhD students and provide a pipeline of professionals skilled in the area of measurement science. Also, a series of regional NPL hubs will be created to disseminate and build on expertise, and meet local business needs.

The University of Surrey has been awarded the coveted ‘University of the Year’ accolade by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2016, in addition to rising to eighth place in the UK rankings.

In the last year, student satisfaction increased once again to its best ever, at 92% according to the National Student Survey 2015. The University’s graduates continued to enjoy high employability rates, and entry standards have also risen.

Professional Training placement programme:

Training for your futureThe University of Surrey Professional Training placement programme is one of the best in the world. It is also one of the largest, with over 2,300 world-leading partner organisations in the UK and overseas. These include distinguished organisations such as IBM, Microsoft, HSBC, The Walt Disney Company, Ernst & Young, British Airways and Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts.

What is a Professional Training placement?Professional Training is a period of work experience between the 2nd and 3rd or 3rd and final year of study. The placement typically lasts between 30 weeks and 12 months and may be formed of one or more placements. A placement can also be paid work experience.

Placements around the worldSome students spend their placements with a UK company or organisation and others have the opportunity to go to Europe or beyond. Recent students have joined placements in New Zealand, Australia and African countries.

Supporting you every step of the wayWe’ll make sure that you understand the process and what is involved. You’ll learn how to write a stand-out CV and practice your interview technique.

Unlike other universities, we continue to support you once you start your placement, including visits from your department to answer any questions and offer guidance.

Careers ServiceThe friendly Careers team offer a wide range of support, including one-to-one advice and innovative events. They will help you explore the exciting opportunities available after university and navigate the different stages of the recruitment process.

There are regular sessions to improve students’ essential skills, such as confidence and teamwork, and top employers frequently visit Surrey to give talks and offer valuable networking opportunities.

Whatever your degree or stage of study, the Careers Service is open all-year-round, with help available online as well as face-to-face.

Surrey’s help doesn’t end once you graduate – alumni can access the Careers Service for life, and benefit from personal appointments for two years after leaving Surrey.

I feel very excited and very proud, having graduated from one of the top UK universities. I actually want to take it further and study Masters. I have already applied, they accepted me and I’ll be starting in September.

When I started the foundation course, my English wasn’t very good, my math and chemistry wasn’t very good either and I lacked presentation skills. Now I feel more equipped to enter the workforce.

Lecturers at the ISC were one of the best, the programme that they teach you is similar to what you will learn in the first year at the university so the first year of the degree was actually quite easy. It was a smooth transition and I managed to score high grades because of the ISC.

The place itself, Guildford is one of the best places to be. It has a nice atmosphere, it’s very international, everybody is happy and smiling. The positive energy of Guildford is actually why I chose to continue studying here.

Last summer I did an internship and I feel like I was applying the skills I learnt at the University. I worked for a company called Petromin, a lubrication plant. I worked in the labs, testing product quality.

Now I feel more equipped to enter the workforce.

Smarter studyThe Library and Learning Centre has provided the University of Surrey with a study centre that befits a leading university. Over the last five years, around £16 million has been invested in the Library and Learning Centre, including a new extension.

Library and Learning CentreThe Library and Learning Centre is the academic hub of the University, sitting at the heart of the campus and offering outstanding facilities, as well as being home to the AppleSeed Bookshop and a popular ground-floor meeting area.

From the Library, you can explore hundreds of thousands of books and journals – physical and electronic – as well as audio and image collections. There are also study areas to meet all needs, as well as bookable rooms that provide more private studying space.

The Library is open daily, staying open 24 hours a day during semester time and for long opening hours during vacations.

SPLASHThe Student Personal Learning and Study Hub (SPLASH) is a student-centred area designed to enhance your study. To support your academic and personal development, Student Learning Advisers can assist you in improving your writing, presenting, revision, time management or any other academic skills.

Academic Liaison Librarians also work from SPLASH, offering advice on finding resources, using databases and referencing. We have an Academic Liaison Librarian for each subject area, ready to connect you with the right information resources for your academic needs.

SPLASH also supports the STARS (Surrey’s Top Achievers Recognised and Supported) programme for outstanding students targeting first-class honours.

The ISC makes you feel like you are a part of everything, there’s just a bit more support. I’m loving it, I love Surrey.

I think the placement is such an amazing opportunity, it gives you so many more opportunities after uni. It’ll help so much with finding a job once I’ve graduated so I hope to do one. It helps a lot, especially with hospitality; I think experience is key.

I like exploring England, I like Guildford. It’s very little, which is nice, because you can get familiar with it quickly, and it’s nice to know where everything is. I go into London as well, and Reading, and lots of other places are close. You can go on day trips. I like doing all the ‘touristy’ things, like shopping, going out, the usual student things.

Your Students’ UnionThe Students’ Union lies at the heart of campus life. As an independent, membership-led charity, the Union is the sole representative body for Surrey students. This includes facilitating clubs and societies, organising events and entertainment, offering volunteering and training opportunities, voicing student opinions and providing support and advice to ensure that students get the most out of their time at Surrey.

MembershipAll students at the International Study Centre have the opportunity to be members of the Students’ Union and you will automatically become a member, free-of-charge, when you start studying here.

Get involvedThe purpose of the Students’ Union is to provide a central space for Surrey students, and we encourage you to get involved as much as you want. So whether you want to participate by joining a club or society, or you want to get involved as a Sabbatical Officer, we’re here to support you.

Make new friends and have funThe Students’ Union organises fun activities and events such as creative workshops and trips abroad. The Union also houses five bars, cafés and restaurants and has its own 1,600-capacity nightclub. So whether you’re into clubbing or comedy, live music or pub quizzes, you’ll find plenty to keep you entertained without even having to leave the campus.

My name is Alisa, I’m from Russia. I picked Surrey because of hospitality, as it’s the best one in England.

Here, you get to meet people from all over the world, you get to know their culture. On campus, you basically live in a little town with people of your age only. I’m quite sociable so I know lot of people on other courses.

I do cheerleading, trampolining, hip-hop and photography. It’s amazing, whatever you can think of, they have it. If you want to do language, almost any kind of sport, even winter sports. They have everything; music, arts or anything.

Settling inFor many students, starting university life is their first experience of living away from home.To help you settle in, you’ll be introduced to the International Study Centre, University and your new student life. You can meet staff and other students, take campus tours, and join the Library, Students’ Union, sports clubs and societies.

Personal supportWhen you arrive at the International Study Centre we will introduce you to your Personal Tutor. They will help you get the most out of your university experience by answering questions and offering ongoing support. When you move onto your undergraduate degree, a personal tutor will support you and offer help throughout your studies.

Arrivals DayYou will receive a big, warm welcome when you arrive. ‘Freshers Angels’ (University of Surrey student helpers) will be here to meet you. They can help you find your way around campus and will be a friendly and welcoming point of contact.

Medical helpIf you feel ill there are medical staff on-site: Student Health Care is a nurse-led service which provides health information, advice, support and clinics run by specialist nurses. The Guildowns University Medical Centre is also situated on campus and open throughout the year.

The Centre for WellbeingIt is important that you feel happy and supported throughout your time at Surrey. If you need someone to talk to or have any personal concerns, our counsellors are available. All our counsellors are experienced in working with students from a broad range of cultures and nationalities.

Religious and spiritual supportThe University of Surrey is a vibrant multi-faith, multicultural community. There is a network of chaplains drawn from a range of spiritual traditions and religious communities who are available to offer support, advice and confidential listening.

Accommodation at a glance» About two thirds of our accommodation is on

the Stag Hill campus and more than 50 per cent of rooms have en suite shower and toilet facilities.

» Manor Park is about one mile away (20 minutes’ walk or a short cycle ride). It has over 1,500 en suite rooms and is close to Surrey Sports Park.

» Hazel Farm provides affordable accommodation about three miles from Stag Hill Campus.

» Students share a kitchen-dining room, conveniently close to bedrooms.

» We have communal areas with TV rooms, mail racks and friendly staff.

» Free broadband and belongings insurance.» All residences are non-smoking.» Most accommodation is mixed-sex, but you

can request to live in a single-sex flat or floor if you wish.

Courts of Residence University accommodation is arranged in groups of self-catered housing called Courts of Residence. All accommodation has been carefully designed to provide a comfortable and safe living space you can make your own.

International Foundation Year

University-style teachingThe International Foundation Year introduces you to the style of teaching that will be used during your degree. All our tutors are experts in their field and highly experienced. You’ll participate in tutorials, seminars and lectures which will prepare you well for your undergraduate studies.

Assessment and courseworkYou will be assessed through a combination of examinations and coursework, which could take the form of a presentation or extended essay. You will also have several opportunities to take an IELTS test, once you are fully prepared.

Study structureYou can choose one of three Foundation routes:» Business, Economics, Law and Social Sciences» Engineering and Physical Sciences» Life Sciences

During the Foundation Year you will study core units and subject-specific units which are carefully designed to focus on the academic areas most relevant to your chosen degree.

Foundation Year essentialsYou can begin the International Foundation Year in either September or February. When you join the International Study Centre you will receive a conditional offer letter of a degree place at the University. You can progress onto your chosen degree the following September when you have achieved the required progression criteria.

Progression criteriaYou will need to achieve an overall average of 65% or above and at least 55% in every unit of the programme to progress to your degree. We’ll support you throughout your time at the ISC to make sure you achieve this and progress to the University.

You will also need to take an IELTS test during your Foundation Year and must achieve IELTS 6.5 with no skill below 6.0, prior to progressing to your chosen undergraduate degree.

If you want to progress to BSc International Hospitality Management, BSc International Hospitality and Tourism Management, BSc Tourism Management or BSc International Events Management, you may need to attend an interview with Academic Tutors at the University.

The International Foundation Year is a programme of academic subjects, study skills and English language training designed specifically to provide international students with a pathway to undergraduate degree study at the University of Surrey, one of the UK’s most prestigious universities.

I am studying the Business, Economics, Law and Social Sciences Foundation Year at the University of Surrey ISC and I am from Malaysia. I have chosen the UK because I was really attracted to this country. I really enjoy it because of the people; the way you are treated here is different from other countries.

I decided to go to Surrey because it is highly ranked for business, and the costs are more affordable than other highly ranked universities. The University of Surrey is excellent and I think I can be really proud if I get my degree here. It will be a big achievement for me. I am sure it will help me a lot in my career especially because this University is well recognised.

The staff in the ISC are really helpful. You can just ask questions if you’re in doubt and they will answer you anytime. You can send an email if you have any problem with your studies. Moreover, the ISC provides the required skills to progress to University. In a week we have about 13 hours of teaching. So you have to manage the rest of your time and be responsible, and

autonomous. When the tutor asks you to read a new topic, you have to do it if you don’t want to be lost in the next lesson.

The teaching in the ISC is really interactive, compared to back at home. In Malaysia everyone sits down and keeps quiet, but over here everyone takes part in class, which is good and makes it lively and fun. I will say that classes here are never boring and all of our teachers are good.

The ISC enabled me to meet lots of new people. Everyone is really friendly here; it’s really easy to meet new friends. We are all from different nationalities but we mix really well, and I’m really happy with that.

The Business, Economics, Law and Social Sciences International Foundation Year provides the subject knowledge, language proficiency and study skills you need to progress to degree study at the University of Surrey in a related field.

International Foundation Year essentials

Core unitStudy Skills for University

You will develop your English communication skills and learn a range of study skills, including: writing and reading strategies, presentation and seminar participation, organisation of time and materials, meeting deadlines and responding to feedback.

At the end you will be able to use English language in your own academic work, give well-structured presentations, confidently answer follow-up questions and contribute to seminar discussions, take notes from readings and lectures; plan, develop and write well-structured academic essays; and be confident in self-directed learning strategies.

You will also study for the IELTS exam covering all four skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking) in order to be fully prepared to take an IELTS exam during your academic year.

Subject-specific unitsBusiness Studies 1 & 2

You will look at the operational and strategic problems facing business people in the modern market economy. These units will focus on a wide range of issues, such as management and ethical aspects.

Economics 1 & 2

These units introduce you to the basics of economics: economic systems, types of goods, the allocation of resources, elasticity, price controls, types of markets, cost and revenue, economies of scale and market failure.

These units provide you with a sound foundation in the principles of financial accounting. Learn about ratio analysis, double entry book-keeping, preparation of trial balances, profit and loss statements, depreciation, limited companies, manufacturing accounts and the interpretation of accounts.

Law 1 & 2

During these units, you will learn about law, the relationship between law, justice and morality, the sources of law, including British and European Union (EU) legislation and the doctrine of precedent; the Civil and Criminal Courts and the role of Judiciary.

These units introduce you to formulae, equations and moles, atomic structure, introduction to redox systems, thermodynamics and bonding. You will also cover equilibria, acid-based equilibria, kinetics and organic chemistry.

Physics 1 & 2

In these units you will look at sound, reflection, refraction, interference, diffraction, electromagnetic waves, strengths of solids, fluids, heat and gases and the structure of the atom. You will also cover electrical current and charge, potential difference, resistance, capacitance, transistors and amplifiers, electrical fields, gravitational fields, magnetic fields and electromagnetic fields.

Pure Mathematics 1 & 2

You will develop your knowledge of algebra, solving equations, sketching graphs and use of calculus. Focusing on functions, derivatives and integrals, the application of these in the ‘real world’ is a major part of this course.

Applied Maths 1 & 2

You will learn about the relationship between real-life situations and mathematical models and how these can be improved and refined.

The teaching in the ISC was tutorial style. We don’t have that many people per group, less than 20 people. It’s more like a classroom instead of lectures. So you can actually learn the things from the teacher and then you have enough time to ask if you don’t understand.

In a UK university, you need to do your own reading before you go to the lecture because in a one-hour or two-hour lecture they pack a lot of knowledge. For foundation, they give you time to ask questions if you don’t understand.
