Ihopeyouenjoyedthisnecessarymid-semesterbreak.I’vefoundthatsometimesinordertoactuallyhaveaholidayandrelax,youjustneedtopackthebagsandvamoose,toutesuite,whichiswhatIdid.Actually,IwentofftoseeMelbourne,whichI’veneverbeentobefore(quiteshocking),andtherewasthiswholenewculturalexperience.Butwe’redamnluckythisweek,becausewedon’tneedtobuyaplaneticketplusbaggageplusextortionatetrainticketstogettotheairportinordertoexperienceanewculturalrealm,becauseit’sInternationalWeek.

ThefabulousinternationalofficersAshrafAliasandSamGuo,ontheSRC,haveorganisedawholeheapofevents,includingnightmarkets,soccergames,self-defenceclasses,anddanceperformance.

Thenheapsofhandyworkshopsthatwillhelpthosewhomightbestrugglingwithimmigrationorvisaissuesworkwiththesystem,and,inthestudenttradition,arallywithafreeBBQdemandinginternationalstudenttravelconcessions.Also,someofyoumayhavenoticedthatthere’sasnazzynewicononthelibrarylawnportrayingMahatmaGhandi,thankstotheIndianGovernmentforUNSW’ssupportofIndianstudents-veryphotogenicforanygraduationphotos!

Somepeoplesaythatyoumakeyourownluck,andBlitzthinksthatCOFAstudentBelemLett,the2010winneroftheBrettWhiteleyTravellingArtScholarship,hasbucketloadsofthatstuff.

Theprestigiousartscholarship,administeredbytheArtGalleryofNSW,offers$25,000andathree-monthresidencyattheprestigiousCitéInternationaledesArtsinParistogiftedyoungartistes.

how did you manage to score such a prestigious scholarship?FortheprevioustwoyearsI’veenteredtheBrettWhiteleyTravellingScholarshipandbothtimeswasafinalistforthecompetition-beingafinalisttwiceinarowwasmorethanenoughincentivetoenterathirdtime.Significantchangesinthedirectionof…mypracticeledtothecurrentcontinuingbodyofwork,forwhichIwasawardedthescholarship.

Your mother was an artist – did she inspire you?Shedefinitelyinspiredmeatayoungage,throughherownpassionforcreatingwork

andexposingmetovariousotherpractices,suchasinkbrushpaintingclassesandpaper-makingworkshops.Ihavealwayshadagreatappreciationfortheextremecontrolofmediumssuchasinkandguache,andthedexteritytowhichmymotherappliedthesemediumsinmakingherownwork.InmyownpracticeIaminterestedinjuxtaposingsomeelementsofthesensitivemannertowhichthesematerialscanbeusedwithrougherandmoreintuitiveincidentalmark-making.

Your winning exhibition, refraction 2.0., consists of ink, pigment, soft pastel and charcoal on unprimed canvas. What is the concept?Myworkexploresnotionofthelandscape,asexistingwithinbothphysicalandabstractnotionsofwhatthistermmeanswithincontemporaryartisticpractice.Theworkcomesfromtherelationship,whichexistsbetweenthe‘real’landscapeandthenotionofwhatweconsiderthistermtomean.any advice for artists who want their work seen?Giveanythingagoandtrytohavefreedom,whetherworkinguponthecheapestbitofcansonpaperoronbelgiumlinen.Theseresponsesarequitepainterlybiased,butitcanapplyacrossmediums.Secondly,persevere-it’snoteasy.It’sactuallyreallyhardsometimes,soifyouwanttobeanartistandmakework,thenputeverythingyouhaveintoit. Welcome home! how was your tour?OurmostrecentstopwasinMalaysia-thisbeautifulfestivalinthemiddleoftherainforest[RainforestWorldMusicFestival]forthreedays,playingwithbandsfromallovertheworld,likethispercussionistfromAfricaandahornplayerfromPeru.TherewasthisgypsybandfromIndia,andtherewasthisgirl–

whowasaguyobviously–dancingtothismusic,andshehadmanyringsonherhead.Sheputthreeorfourringsonthefloor,steppedbackwards,thenbentherselfbackwardsandpickeduptheringswithhereyes.

Well, we all have our special skills. Did you expect such a warm reception on your international tour?IwascurioustoseewhatpeoplewouldthinkofanAustralianLatin-Americanband,inLatin-America.We’reinspiredbyLatin-Americanmusic,butmostoftheguysareAustralian.Oursoundwasdifferentfromanyoftheotherbandsandpeoplerespondedpositivelytothat.

now that you’ve had the chance to see and play with other latin-american bands, has going back to your roots changed your music?Igothereeverythreeyears.Myfamilylivesthere;I’mtheonlyonehereinAustralia.IkeepcomingbackandeverytimeIseenewartists,andgetinspiredtodonewthings.Butthistime,itwasn’tjustme-everysinglememberofthebandwasthere,listeningtoandexperiencingthecontinent.Thatwasamazing,becauseIcamebackwiththebestbandever.

being the only Columbian, how did you get a band of aussies together to play latin-american inspired music?Initiallyweplayedatcafes,thenatconcerts,like(at)theLansdowneHotel.Thebandthatyouseerightnowisnotthat

sameband;atfirstitwasjustfriendsoffriendsoffriends,[but]thenIwenttoColumbiaanddecidedIneededabandwhowere100percentinmusic.SoIcalledtheguysupandsaid“Ifyouwanttobeintheband,it’sgonnabeyourmusicalcareer”.AndIcompletelytransformedthebandmembers.

What does Watussi mean to you?It’samusicaladventure.TohaveAustralianmusicianswassomethingveryimportant.WhenyouworkwithonlyLatin-Americans,thesoundisgoingtobedifferent–it’sgoingtobegreat,aswell–butIwastryingtomakeapointthatwe’reAustralian.EventhoughmostofthesongsareinSpanish,Watussiisauniquesound:aLatin-Australiansync.

Which country feels more like home to you?Iwouldsayboth…inColumbiaIfeelhome(but)Australiahascreatedahomeformeinmanyways.WithmyAustralianlife,Ihaveasupportedmusicalcareerandsuchagoodcommunityoffriends.Whereveryoufeelthemost,thatiswhereyoufeelathome.

You mainly sing in spanish. how do you make sure those who don’t speak spanish can enjoy your music?I’verecentlystartedexploringlyricsinEnglish.IjustthinkitsoundspowerfulinSpanish.Atthestartofeverysong,Ibrieflytrytoexplain.Butthey’rereallyeasypartysongsandthelyricsaren’tasimportant.I’malwayssurprisedhowpeoplereacthere-eveniftheydon’tunderstandthelyrics,peoplearesointothemusic.It’sjustthepower.

I hear Watussi means ‘the most handsome man at the party’. that’s quite a healthy self-image.Initially,itwasjustbecauseIlikedthename,(it)hasnoconnotationofwhoweactuallyareasaband.Ihavealltheseinterviewsandpeoplesay‘Oh,youmustgetallthesegirls’,butwe’reactuallymorethanthat.(Watussi)wasalsoatribeinAfrica(and)adanceintheBluesBrothers!

What can students expect when they see you at the roundhouse?Alotofgood,positiveenergy.WedidashowyesterdayfortheLatin-AmericanfilmfestivalinTheRocks.Thesmilesonpeoples’facesthatnightwerejustincredible;theenergy!Wereallywantpeopletofeelconnected,tofeelnobarriertothelanguage.Likeyousaid,musicisuniversal.Justreallyfeelfree-that’swhatwe’llbringtotheshow.
