What technological innovations withinthe desalination sector have you beenmost excited about recently?A: There are three innovations I considervery exciting. The first are thedevelopments in building large capacitydesalination units. Plants using EnergyRecovery Devices (ERDs) and ROmembranes. These are very cost effective.
Secondly, RO membrane technology isvery exciting. Finally, we are quickly solving, one by one, what was once considered thelimitations of RO technology. Now we havemuch larger diameter membranes, capableof handling high salinity with highpermeability, increasing yields andlowering the amount of fouling.
And thirdly, the development of hybridsystems involving thermal (MED and MSF)and membrane processes (RO), optimisingthe methods by leveraging the strengths ofeach technology and compensating fortheir disadvantages.
Which ongoing desalination projects anddevelopments across the globe have youbeen most impressed by and why?A: Let me begin by mentioning a project inmy own backyard, in the Kingdom of SaudiArabia – the newly commissioned Ras Al-Khair plant. It has a production capacity of1.025 million cubic meters per day (m3/d)and 2,400 MW of electricity.
In South Korea, the Busan desalination ROplant is also very worth mentioning, pioneering the use of large diametermembranes with a high yield production of45 million litres per day. The Hyflux plant inSingapore, using seawater feed and ROmembrane, is operated with a minisculenumber of operators compared totraditional plants.
And finally, here in the UAE, the newextension being built at the Fujairah 1Independent Water and Power Plant (IWPP) issetting the benchmark in energy efficiency,
reducing energy requirements below the fourkilowatt hours per cubic metre threshold.
And thirdly, the development of hybridsystems involving thermal (MED and MSF)and membrane processes (RO), optimisingthe methods by leveraging the strengths ofeach technology and compensating fortheir disadvantages.
The GCC region has been at theforefront of the global desalinationsector for the past few decades. Do yousee this leadership role continuing inthe coming decades?A: Absolutely, if for no other reason, theneed for water, the population growth andeconomic development requires the GCCto lead in desalination. We also have agreat talent pool of young leaders here inthe region, and because the industry is ofstrategic interest in the region, it tends toattract some of the brightest of the brightyoung minds.
This is not to say, however, that otherregions do not and will not lead in thefuture. All regions of the world will
intensify their reliance on desalination inthe decades to come.
In your view, is the desalination industrybeing taken as seriously as it should be byboth the public and governments acrossthe region?A: Governments understand thatdesalination drives economic growth andprovides for the needs of society. Just look athow production has increased over the yearsto understand how seriously they take it. In1960, water production was about 58,000m3/d, but today it is 80.9 million m3/d. Thisphenomenal increase was only possiblebecause of the keen interest and hugeinvestment by governments across the globe.
Additionally, governments have organisedthemselves around water needs, creatingseparate ministries and high-level leadershiproles to deliver on water needs andimplement water strategy.
The industry’s profile has grown andmatured over recent years, and this reflectspublic support and awareness of the criticalrole the industry plays. It has become “bigindustry” for many countries, and itsinternational conferences and workshopsare well attended and growing.
How do you envision the role of theInternational Desalination Association(IDA) evolving in the coming years?A: The IDA’s role is to lead. It is to set outwhere we are going and facilitate ourgetting there as an industry. It is aboutinnovation, which is why sustainability is soimportant, because it drives us in a newdirection and pushes forth innovation.
We are on the cusp of creating an entirelynew world with technological and industrialinnovation, and the desalination industry isat the centre of this change. The IDA’s role isto ensure we as an industry sector embracethe change, learn from others and set anexample to follow.

MADE OF POLYTETRA Fluoro Ethylene(PTFE) hollow fibres, Sumitomo ElectricIndustries' POREFLON MicrofiltrationMembrane Module exhibits extraordinarytreatment results in highly oil-contaminatedwastewater and produced water treatments.
According to its Japanese manufacturer, the high performance of PTFE is down to thematerial's excellent chemical and heatresistance. The firm's proprietary three-dimensional fibril structure of PTFEmembrane, combined with its chemicalresistance, is able to prevent fouling by oil,and also allows membrane cleaning byharsh chemicals. Wastewater with a high-oilcontent can be directly charged into themembrane system without the need for pre-treatment units, and the system can also beused for municipal water and wastewatertreatments such as MBR, as well as pre-treatment for desalination.
Sumitomo Electric Industries recentlydonated ¥5 million (AED 175,000) to alleviatedamage inflicted in the Philippines byTyphoon Haiyan. The money was provided to the regionthrough the Japanese Red Cross Society andother charity and aid organisations.
BAHRAIN HAS LAUNCHED an ambitiousproject to dig a number of artificialsprings in order to increase the country'swater resources. The plan, which hasbeen spearheaded by the Municipalitiesand Urban Planning Affairs Ministry, hasbeen undergoing a pilot phase in IsaTown, Zayed Town, Rumaitha and DarKulaib, with the ministry hoping theproject will help reduce the percentageof treated water used in agriculture.
Bahrain currently produces close to 90million cubic centimetres of treatedwater a day, of which 60 per cent goestowards agricultural needs.
Ministry Affairs Assistant Under-Secretary, Dr Salman Al Khuzaie, commented, “We are looking to reducethat 60 per cent and direct the waterinto other uses, and for that we arelooking into hydroponics and newtechniques to reduce reliance on it andexcess consumption.
“Bahrain doesn't have a lot of rainand most natural springs have dried upbesides sewage leakages to the ground. We have possible locations that we areplanning to dig – we may succeed orfail, but we have to carry out tests,” AlKhuzaie added.
