IWCZ NEWSLETTER IWCZ NEWSLETTER
Everybody knows what Valentine’s Day means: red hearts,
flowers, chocolates, and cards, etc.
What’s the obsession with St Valentine’s Day anyway? Do you
know the origin of this symbolic day?
In the third century, the Roman Empire was ruled by an evil
emperor called Claudius . He was nicknamed Claudius the Cruel
because of his tendency for getting into wars and abusing his
people. In fact, he was getting into so many wars during the third century that he was having
a difficult time recruiting soldiers to fight his wars
Claudius believed that recruitment for his army was not going so well because the Roman
men did not want to leave their families behind, so he embargoed all marriages in Rome.
Thousands of couples saw their hopes of matrimony dashed by the single act of a tyrant. And
no one seemed interested in standing up to the emperor.
A simple Christian priest named Valentine came forward and stood up for love. He began
to secretly hold wedding ceremonies for the soldiers before they went off to war, despite the
emperor’s orders. Emperor Claudius found out about the secret ceremonies and, of course, he
was very angry. He had Valentine thrown into prison and sentenced to death.
As Valentine was awaiting execution, he fell in love with a blind girl who happened to be the
jailer’s daughter. On the eve of his execution, with no writing instruments available, Valentine
is said to have written her a poem in ink that he squeezed from violets. Legend has it that his
words made the blind woman see again. It was a brief romance because the next day, February
14th, Valentine was executed. Although he died, his spirit lives on.
He knew eventually he would be caught but he did it any way . He had the courage to stand up
and fight for what he believed in.
As we celebrate Valentine’s Day this year let us not forget get the real reason for Valentine’s
death. May we all be like him: having the unwavering courage and confidence to fight for what
we believe in.

SPECIAL GUEST
RICARDO LUQUE10:45 - 11:15
If there was another name for Latin music in Croatia, it would certainly have to be - Ricardo Luque! Born in Venezuela, he gained his first musical experiences playing and singing with his father and his friends in his native city of Maracay. He started the Latin music scene in Croatia early 90s and became a symbol of Latin music and the face of the successful Latin music band - Cubismo. He is known for his Latin music performances, great Latino fiesta and an excellent entertainer.
He is also the founder of So-Do El Sistema Croatia, an internationally acclaimed program with its aim to stimulate the intellectual, social, moral, spiritual and emotional development for children and young adults through music. We have donated this years from our Christmas Bazaar funds to So-Do El Sistema Croatia to purchase orchestral musical instruments.
Do not miss Ricardo Luque and his great team and band. They will perform for us on Valentine’s Day with a hot, Latin touch.
Please do not forget this month’s General Meeting on Tuesday, February 14th to be held at the WESTIN HOTEL, 17th floor Panorama Hall.

A NOTE ON NOMINATING COMMITTEES, NOMINATIONS, ELECTIONS, AND EXECUTIVE
BOARDS.
Although the nomination process usually starts being mentioned in the April edition of the IWCZ Newsletter, the Board thought it might be best to start a little earlier this year, in an effort to give our members (specially the new ones) time to understand and follow up on any questions they might have before making decisions, be it to volunteer or to nominate a fellow member to the Executive Board.
WHAT IS THE EXECUTIVE BOARD?
As per the General Acts of the IWCZ, the Executive Board is elected by the General Assembly for the purpose of overall management of the Association. However, even though there are distinct roles, the Board works as a whole and there is constant cooperation within its members; this is essential to accomplish goals set, and to provide a supportive and a positive environment.
HOW ARE THE MEMBERS OF AN EXECUTIVE BOARD SELECTED?
The Nominating Committee (NC) is responsible for the selection and election process. The NC will be selected by the current Executive Board and will consist of 5 ladies from the General Assembly. Once the selection has been made, the Executive Board ensures the names of the 5 ladies are communicated to all members.
• Ladies who volunteer to be on the NC are responsible to nominate candidates to serve on the next Executive Board.
• Ladies on the NC are unable to nominate themselves. • Once the NC has identified the eligible members willing to serve on the new Executive
Board, they inform the current Executive Board that the selection process has been completed.
• The voting process is done at the May General Meeting when the assembly is asked to vote for the elected candidates. The elections at the GM are organized by the NC and recorded by the Executive Secretary.
Even though additional information will be provided during the run up to this year’s election, the Executive Board welcomes any questions our members might have on this topic. Additionally, the IWCZ Statutes and General Acts are available to all from the IWCZ office.
