2. What is the Internet? A network of many different computers
communicating with each other Transmits information almost
instantly all over the world 2
3. Why The Internet? Most modern computers can hold
approximately the same amount of information as 150,000 books.
Modern computers can transmit the equivalent of a book every 20
seconds. Information that would have taken days or weeks to be sent
on paper arrives in seconds! 3

5. The Internet: A History Began in 1969 as ARPANET (Advanced
Research Projects Agency), a Defense Department project to
decentralize computer connections 1970s and 80s: Rules for
transferring data (protocols) developed by researchers 1990s:

the Internet Defined by hyperlinks in online documents that link to

Internet, but it can also be a dangerous place Always remember the

weaknesses that hackers and viruses can exploit Make sure you keep
your software up to date Check websites regularly for patches and

38. Spyware & Antivirus Software Antivirus software can
help keep out malicious software or viruses Spyware tracks your
actions and disseminates your information to places you dont want
it to go Remember: you are the best antivirus security! 38

very open and that it's difficult to know where information will go
Don't use your personal identifying information if you can help it
If you must share personal or financial information, make sure
you're using a trusted site with secure encryption 39

encrypt personal information Look for the lock in your browser!
