What is Social Activism?

• Social activism can be defined as attitudes and behavior that attempt to influence the social distribution of status, power, and resources. (Perez, 1996)

• One of the main goals of activism is to move oppressed populations into a better place.

• Protests• Magazines• Billboards• Television• Art• Theatre acts• Strikes• …..INTERNET!

Why Do People Get Involved?

• People want to improve the situations around them.

• People feel motivated to make a difference in the world.

• Achieve political or social goals.• They feel a call to action.

The past forms of activism• Institutionalized• Had to meet in person, and

this would subject you to police involvement if the government was against your movement.

• Costs associated with printing materials, making phone calls, and hiring employees.

• Lots of time involved

Revolution of Activism: Present

• One does not have to be an organization to have a cause.

• Due to the anonymous nature that the internet has to offer, people are able to meet and make changes in the world around them on an instantaneously.

• They are free from persecution by their local and state governments. (This is seen particularly strongly in the middle east, where people can organize protests and then at the very least have them occur before being shut down by the local authorities).

• No matter the size of your cause this social networking site allows you to find a like minded group of people that share your sentiments.

• As of July 5, 2010 their website states that 140,568 actions taken this week.

• Facebook.com boasts a network of over 400 million active users.

• People spend over 500 billion minutes per month on Facebook!

• Using the “Share” Feature along with the “Like” link people can express their support to a cause by posting an image to their walls for their networks to see.

• Twitter boasts a user base of over 26 million active users

• Twitter is a medium that is more heavily supported by mobile users.

• The “Retweet” feature is used to bring awareness to a cause.
