Introduction
• A set of communication protocols or rules for internet
• There are four layers in internet protocol suite– Application layer– Transport layer– Internet layer– Link layer
History
• ARPANET• Research conducted by DARPA developed
TCP/IP in mid 1970s• First used in military computers• The switch from ARPANET to TCP/IP was
officially completed in 1st Jan 1983
Internet Protocols
TCP• Lies in the transport layer• Converts data, images into small packets
to transport them through the network• Sends packets in order with minimal errors• Eliminates duplicate data and resends lost
and discarded packets
Internet Protocols
IP• Lies in internet layer• Responsible for addressing each packets
to its destination• Responsible for selecting best route to
sent the packets to its destination
Internet Protocols
TCP/IP working together
• Same as the working during shifting our residence to new location
Internet Protocols
HTTP• Hypertext Transfer Protocol• lies in application layer• Functions as request-response protocol in
client server computing model• State less protocol
Internet Protocols
FTP• File Transfer Protocols• Also a request-response protocol• Used for uploading and downloading• Differs from HTTP on the basis of
responses
Internet Protocols
FTP
FTP client FTP Server
FTP request
Response
Actual file not in the form of hypertext
Internet Protocols
Telnet• Developed in 1969• Lies in application layer• Allows you to access someone else’s
computer• Remote login• telnet differs from HTTP and FTP
Conclusions
• Internet protocol suite is nothing but a set of rules for communication
• Such rules are very necessary as nowadays because of increasing numbers of computers in internet
• It has been very helpful to all mankind
