Unearth the hidden market

Page 27: Internships, Placement Years & Other Work Experience · 2020-05-04 · • More than 4/5s offered paid work experience programmes for students and recent graduates during the 2018-2019

Hidden Job Market• How might you approach an organisation?• What do you need to consider? What

information do you need to share?• What are the pros and cons of each method?

Page 28: Internships, Placement Years & Other Work Experience · 2020-05-04 · • More than 4/5s offered paid work experience programmes for students and recent graduates during the 2018-2019

The recruitment process is a skill. It varies depending on the opportunity but could involve one or all of the following:

• CV or application• Psychometric tests • Video Interview• Assessment Centre• Telephone interview – often competency based• Technical interview

What it takes to get work experience:

Page 29: Internships, Placement Years & Other Work Experience · 2020-05-04 · • More than 4/5s offered paid work experience programmes for students and recent graduates during the 2018-2019

• Are there deadlines or key times when available? • How competitive are they? Do you need a Plan B too?• Are opportunities advertised?• Are there resources available to help you to identify orgs?• Could it lead to graduate opportunities? • Are there application obstacles along the way you can get support with?• Is this experience testing a skill set OR providing an insight?• Are there resources readily available to help you?• Any other challenges?

Things to Consider……

Page 30: Internships, Placement Years & Other Work Experience · 2020-05-04 · • More than 4/5s offered paid work experience programmes for students and recent graduates during the 2018-2019

• Don’t be blinkered by a niche area or experiences that related directly to your degree

• This narrows the opportunities available • Work experience that develops key skills such as commercial

awareness, analytical skills in the workplace, marketing, communication, team work etc are all crucial to a lot of roles spanning sectors and specialisms

• All work experience is key • And consider how you can increase your commercial awareness...
