with Orion Health Rhapsody

Orion Health | Case Study

Thanks to a well-defined Interoperability Office and Rhapsody technology, this public healthcare organisation has created a large, fully integrated Healthcare Information System with the goal of increasing quality of care. The system is agile, inclusive and fully aligned with the overall objectives of the Health Department – to put the citizen at the heart of all activities whilst meeting the needs and expectations of healthcare professionals.

The Challenge

Conselleria de Sanitat Universal i Salut Pública (Generalitat Valenciana) is the Public Healthcare Provider in the region of Valencia, responsible for care delivery (health promotion, prevention, primary care, acute care, mental and social health), including:

• More than 5 million inhabitants and foreign residents (plus around 6 million tourists per year)• More than 7 million Electronic Health Records• Organised around 24 Health Departments each with a reference hospital, 22 specialty centers, 800+ primary care centers, 370 residences for elderly people and 26 laboratories.• 4.000+ Family Doctors, 5.000+ specialists in the different hospitals• 43,5 million primary care visits per year• 100+ million ePrescriptions per year

As with many large healthcare organisations, Valencia had a number of disparate information systems they needed to integrate to provide better information to professionals and increase the quality of care, improving organisational efficiency.

• Asynchronous messaging (delivery guarantee)

• Message routing• Integration of protocols• Streamlined access to separate

data sources• Integration of disparate

messaging systems

The Solution

The SINAPSIS Project was created to realise Valencia’s Application Integration Strategic Plan. A plan to consolidate disparate and heterogeneous existing information systems into an integrated Healthcare Information System for the whole region.

The Project included the following strategic actions:

• Corporate policy definition for application integration• Roadmap definition for application integration• Rhapsody Integration Engine implementation • Development & maintenance of interoperability routes • Assessment of healthcare standards at clinical centers• Ensuring dedicated resources to support the strategy

Orion Health’s Rhapsody™ Integration Engine was implemented as part of a long-term integration of software applications for healthcare services across the Valencia region. 24 health areas (with 24 hospitals and 800+ primary care centers across the region) are connected to the Rhapsody integration hub.

There are currently more than 30 different integration projects in production, both corporate and center specific.

Valencia’s production environment involves 27 instances of Rhapsody Integration running across 55 nodes, and the pre-production environment has 27 instances running on 27 nodes.

Message volumes across the entire region are significant, running close to two million messages every day. The SSCCPRO node alone moves more than 300.000 critical clinical messages every day. Rhapsody is a very important part of the client’s IT infrastructure and integration strategy.

“Rhapsody has become a key component of our Information System, managing a huge volume of messages to integrate heterogeneous information systems in the region. This is helping us to be more efficient and answering our professionals’ requests to provide increasingly more demanding and complex patient-centred care delivery, whilst ensuring healthcare system sustainability”

Carmen Ferrer. CIO. Subdirectora General de Sistemas de Información para la Salud
