Introduction:

We are pleased to introduce our research team under the name of Isfahan Zamin Research Group.

To pin down the past and discover the different aspects of art and culture of Persia, our group has had and active program to find out and provide new ideas and knowledge about Persian tangible cultural heritages which will uncover the facts which are hidden under the darkness of past.

Persians as an ancient nation with a vast realm have gained and gathered a massive source of experience and knowledge about art and architecture which are not well known to our nation and the rest of the world.

Tough the global village is an outstanding fact and no one can consider it a myth, but it is not enough to bring the people of different nations close to each other, because the global village is just a name and nothing more. To remove the separating wall between human kinds, something else with a mighty power is needed. It is believed that the mighty power which is able to bring the man kind under the same universal roof is art and culture.

With respect to aforementioned points and in hope of bridging the gap which may grow wider between nations and singing the Uni-Verse(verse of unity), we have taken a small step to throw light on all aspects of Persian cultural heritage which is a part of international heritage.

Workshop Description:

As previously mentioned, we provide two short courses or two workshops;

The first workshop: surveying the historical city of Isfahan which includes the following subjects:

Isfahan architectural style.

Isfahan urban design style.

Persian gardens in Isfahan.

Palaces / pavilions in Isfahan.

The Charbagh Ave in Isfahan

The Great Friday mosque

Recreation of old Isfahan

The city of Isfahan, which has been one of the largest and oldest cities of Persia since ancient times, is located by the river of Zayande-rood in the center of Persia. Isfahan contains a number of historical treasures during the course of time including the following sites and buildings: Atashgah, on outskirt of Isfahan, was used as a fire temple during the Sassanid era but in fact it has been a surprising Elamite Ziggurat.

The Great Friday Mosque, which constructed and developed during the seventh to eighteenth centuries, is considered as a museum for Persian architecture.

The Great Bazaar, The longest and oldest bazaar (market) of its own type, includes a variety of markets, caravanserais, workshops, storages and etc.

Page 7: Introductionisfahanzamin.yolasite.com/resources/English...Naghshe Jahan Square Complex known as Emam Square is a magnificently impressive urban square with quartile great buildings

`

Naghshe Jahan Square Complex known as Emam Square is a magnificently impressive urban square with quartile great buildings around it. Shah Abbas Mosque which is known as Emam Mosque stands on the south side of the square. On the opposite side of Emam Mosque on the north side of the square, Gheysarie Entrance opens its way into the Bazaar. Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque is on the east side of square and Ali Qapu Palace on the west side.

Charbagh as a long and special avenue or a historical garden complex stretches from north to south.

Chehel Sotoon Palace, which has remained from the Safavid citadel, is a great pavilion with twenty wooden pillars in the middle of a garden. The reflection of twenty pillars in the long pool in front of the pavilion is the reason why it is called „‟the Palace of Forty Pillars‟‟

The pavilion of Hasht Behesht with its secretive and mystical architecture and surprising details is located in the middle of Bolbol (Nightingale) Garden, on the Charbagh Avenue.

Among eleven bridges which cross the Zayande-rood River five bridges are historical structures. The most ancient one is the bridge of Shahrestan which was built during Sassanid dynasty and reconstructed in Saljoughi and Safavid ere. The other four bridges are Marnan, Siose-pol, Jooei and Khajoo.

In addition to above mentioned structures there are a variety of mosques, Schools, Caravanserais, Shrines, Tombs and Pigeon Houses which deserve deep attention.

`

Another feature of Isfahan especially during the Safavid period has been the magnificent urban planning/urban design. Isfahan was an old city with an organic shape before the Safavid time. Safavid Planners provided a great idea and surprising designs for the development and improvement of the city by collecting and combining of Persian architecture and art. They created a plenty of unmatchable urban designs in the world, of which some structures have remained and still shining.

The second workshop: The “Eslimi” or “Persian Pattern” in Persian Architecture:

Eslimi is one of the stunning, fascinating but not well known arts in Persia. It could be found in many doors and windows of historical and old buildings. From outside, the combination of wooden parts creates a lot of amazing shapes or designs and from inside , the combination of colored glasses and lights are very colorful and amazing. It seems that these curved forms and patterns are dancing and moving up and down around each other. The ancient Persian believed that everything was originated from light and god did create the holy light. Being inspired by such spiritual meanings and divine idea, the colorful glasses and amazing wooden Eslimi pattern in windows were created to respect the holy light by the use of supreme beautiful designs. There is another design named “Gereh” which is sometimes confused for Eslimi. The Gereh which is applied in Persian

`

doors and windows is based on straight lines and geometric forms. The Eslimi workshop includes several parts:

A. Acquaintance with forms and the origins of Eslimi which is deeply Persian and not related to Arabic or Islamic arts.

B. Using Eslimi in Persian doors and windows. C. Classification of Eslimi patterns

This creative, shining and incredible art deserves be presented and displayed through the world. To carry the torch of this burden is a part of what we are intending to present in the proposed workshops.
