ZETA LED

Behind LED the Technology

What is an LED?

LED = Light Emitting Diode

A Specially doped crystalline material that emits light when a current is passed through it.

Practical History of LED First Introduced as a practical component in 1962 producing a red light

which was quite weak.

In the 1970s additional colours and wavelengths became available and we saw yellow and orange light and started being used in calculators, digital watches and test equipment

It was not until late 1980s when the rapid growth of LEDs began due to increased technology and better assembly methods. The brightness was 10 times higher than standard LEDs and the Voltage had decreased creating complete power savings. LEDs started being used in digital message displays, medical equipment and bar code scanners

In the 1990s LEDs were replacing traditional lighting in traffic signals, automotive application and variable message signs increased in functionality and decreased in price

By 2004 the cost – brightness ratio had rapidly reduced due to the volume increasing allowing for new innovative lighting solutions.

2009 – Zeta LED Launch a range of direct replacement and high powered LED lighting solutions

LED Facts

LEDs must be driven by carefully controlling current and not using a fixed Voltage.

LEDs are very efficient but still generate a small amount of heat

The essential factor when estimating the lifetime of an LED is the ability to extract the heat from the LEDs. Successful heat dissipation will result in a longer lifetime and a brighter output.

LEDs have a power rating from 60milliamps up to several 10's of watts.

Advantages of LEDs

Lower Power consumption

Carbon emission reductions

Increased Lifetime

Slower degradation of Light(NB.50000hours)*

Ability to dim and colour change

Improved Colour Rendering Index (CRI) for some light sources (sodium replacement)

Safety Issues

No UV

No Mercury

No Infrared

Street lighting replacement = better CRI when replacing SON fittings

CCTV – truer colours that allow subjects to be identified accurately

Voltage reduced down to 12v meaning a safer application and installation.

Manufactures

There are now a number of quality reliable LED manufacturers including:

Nichia Osram Cree Phillips Seoul semiconductor

Thermal Design

Many Early LED lamp failures were due to the lack of understanding surrounding heat management with LEDs. This lack of knowledge resulted in a lifetime of around 2000 hours and not the predicted 50,000 hours.

Thermal Design is the single most important consideration when designing LED Luminaries

Page 9: Intro The Zeta Group *Electronic Vehicle Control Systems *Solar Lighting Solutions *LED Lighting and Display.

Power Supply technology

Power supply's must provide a well regulated constant current to LEDs.

Power supply lifetime must match the LED lifetime rating otherwise the luminaries will fail to achieve the full running time.

Low cost LED solutions can use power supply's that are only rated at 5000 hours and therefore fail even though the LEDs are rated at 50,000 hours.

Mis leading Information

LED technology has been surrounded by misleading information that has contributed to the poor reputation attracted in early 2000

White Light lifetime of 100,000 hours this is untrue – red LEDs can last for up to 100,000 hours. Replacing epoxy with silicone can increase a white LED lifetime to 100,000 (Cambridge University 2009)

LEDs are direct replacements for traditional fittings – This is misleading as an assessment is required to ensure the lighting distribution and intensity required is matched once this has been carried out they can be direct replacements.

Slow Progression

As all new technologies when the first LEDs became available the price was extremely high and the performance was relatively mediocre.

Improvements in materials, assembly and the understanding behind the physics of degradation has lead to an increase in performance and reliability of modern LEDs. This combined with an increase in market penetration lead to a rapid price reduction by approximately a factor of 5 in the last 5 years.

Flexibility

LEDs have the ability to be more flexible than their traditional counterparts as:

They are smaller in size allowing for design possibilities involving different shapes sizes and angles.

They come in a variety of colours and not just standard red, blue, white etc – colours can be mixed to generate a company specific colour i.e. shades of blue and green.

They have the ability to be completely controllable in colour and in brightness.

Situational

When using LED Lighting it is necessary to ensure the light being provided will substitute the traditional source. To ensure you get the correct lighting effect you must

Have a full site survey including luminaire height and light distribution

Select the correct lighting and and number of fixtures to light the area.

Trial the area to witness the change in lighting and benefits

If task lighting is needed add this at a energy cost as little as 3w to increase specific lighting.

Feature, Task and mood LightingAs well as general lighting LED light sources can be used as feature,

task and mood lighting as the light can be designed into flexible strips, concealed water proof units and specific directional fittings.

Feature lighting includes – LED building up lighters reducing energy consumption as much as 700 watts. Also strip lighting that can be used to illuminate internal and external features that is as small as 15mm wide with a thickness of 5mm.

Mood Lighting – RGB (red, green, blue) LED are easily manufactured and controllable with the option of now replacing a 60W incandescent with an 8w wireless controllable LED RGB lamp (Zeta LED).

Task Lighting – task lighting has become a popular way of illuminating office areas, shops and even homes using Gu10 and MR16 bulbs rated at between 25 – 50W these can now be replaced by as little as 3w – 5w of LED lighting (taking situational factors in to consideration).

Disposal, reliability and health issues

Disposal – when disposing of a traditional light fitting there are a number of issues to be addressed.

1. 15p wee charge – disposal cost

2. Mercury content – unable to dispose of through normal waste procedures

Reliability – When using a Zeta LED by using the latest LED technology offer 50,000 hr lifetime to 40% reduction in output

Health Issues:

1. NO Ultra Violet (UV)

2. No Mercury

3. No Flicker

4. Helps prevent SAD – Seasonal Affective Disorder

CSR

Corporate Social Responsibility – The triple bottom line in business defined as: People, Planet and Profit. Maximising the efficiency of these 3 is what a business should be looking to do.

LED lighting fits into all 3 of these categories:

People – a healthier light offering no UV, eliminating flicker, no mercury and prevention of Seasonal Affective disorder.

Planet – reducing energy consumption and Carbon emissions by up to 70% when replacing traditional fittings.

Profit – energy consumption reduced and therefore energy bills reduced directly. The longer life of the products also requires less maintenance and therefore less administration, replacement, labour costs.
