What is ATTIC?In 1997, IDEA became law. As a result,

every IEP must consider assistive technology for students who cannot meet their goals and objectives.

The law states that “Public agencies shall provide assistive technology devices and services to a child with disabilities.”

By 1998, ATTIC was created to assist special needs students in eastern Wayne County access assistive technology.

Page 6: Intro to AT

Assistive Technology Training and Information Center

What does ATTIC do?

ATTIC lends any item, piece of equipment or product system that can be used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of children with disabilities, in accordance with the law.

ATTIC provides any service that directly assists a child with a disability in the selection, acquisition or use of an AT device.

Page 7: Intro to AT

More about ATTIC….

As per the law, ATTIC will provide: A functional evaluation in the child’s

usual environment. Purchase or lease AT devices. Repair or maintain devices. Coordinate among agencies. Train the child and family Train professionals.

Page 8: Intro to AT

Assistive Technology Training and Information Center

Also important…. ATTIC provides devices and services free

to students with disabilities. Items are loaned to teachers, school staff,

or parents for up to 90 days and may be used at school or home, as needed.

ATTIC is available to consult with school staff about students with disabilities.

ATTIC has technology to address all academic areas.

Universal Design for Learning

Is an educational concept that built upon the engineering principle of universal design.

Is meant to provide access to all students, regardless of disability.

With this concept in mind, educators can provide assistive technology in the classroom for all learners, reducing the stigma for those who must rely upon it.

Page 44: Intro to AT

Assistive Technology Training and Information Center

Assistive technology fits into the principle of Universal Design for Learning, creating the best academic environment for all students. ATTIC can assist by loaning appropriate technology to students with disabilities.

Page 45: Intro to AT

Assistive Technology Training and Information Center

Accommodations

Accommodations do not change the curriculum.

They provide access to the student to facilitate learning.

For example, if a child has difficulty hearing, they may receive preferential seating.

Page 46: Intro to AT

Assistive Technology Training and Information Center

Modifications

In DPS, we do not modify the curriculum. If a class is studying weather, all students should study weather.

Some students may give an oral report, while some may present a written paper.

On a test, some students may take a written exam, while others may take a true-false exam.

More low tech for language arts….Highlighter tape or pen

Use different colors to mark targeted learning, such as nouns,

vowels, spelling words, etc. Use to isolate main topic sentence of a

story. Can be erasable, but beware…. Easily used by everyone in a

classroom, not just the disabled student.

There are numerous devices for all types of speech difficulties.

Most of these devices have speech output.Such devices range from low tech to high tech.

Each device should be matched to the student, depending upon their unique needs.
