Persuade: to convince

It can be found in commercials, political campaigns, political cartoons, magazine ads, etc.

What is it? Persuasive writing aims to convince the

reader of a debatable argument. Intended to convince, argue or influence the reader.

Persuasive writing is seen everyday in speeches, commercials, and essays. It is important to be familiar with persuasive writing because it is a useful way of conveying an opinion in a convincing way.

How do I Know if I’m being persuaded

To be able to identify persuasive writing you

must decide if the writer is:

Expressing an opinion.

Trying to convince you of his or her opinion.

Trying to convince you to “do” something.

Persuasive Thesis

In order to be an effective persuasive writer, you must be able to introduce your big argument with a thesis.

Thesis: It’s the one sentence that tells the reader what the whole paper is about.

Defend: To support an argument (backup your stance). Agree with prompt/idea.

Refute: To feel a person or argument is wrong. Disagree with prompt/idea.

Qualify: To say that something is not totally right or totally wrong.

To write a thesis you must:Read the prompt. Form an opinion based on your

point of view on an argument. Decide whether you defend, refute,

or qualify that particular argument. Write a sentence that expresses
