Global Challenges - Cluster
• Every topic is a „Cluster“
• Every Cluster contains a work programme
for 2 years, divided into „Destinations“
• Destinations contain relevant Calls for this
particular area
• Most of the calls are cooperation projects
which need to be executed with at least 3
partners from 3 countries (at least 1 EU
memberstate)

Most common actions – nomen est omen
RIA – Research and Innovation Actions – Fundingrate 100%
Collaborative projects
Gaining new insights, enhance knowledge base, proof of concept for new solutions
From fundamental to applied research
IA – Innovation Action – Fundingrate non-profit 100%, for-profit 70%
Collaborative projects
Development of modified/improved products, methods, services
Higher TRL-level as in RIAs, companies and partners for application are highly recommended (no mere research collaboration)
CSA – Coordination & Support Actions – Fundingrate 100%
Single applicant or collaborative projects
Measures to realize the program goals and results – collection of results, studies, dissemination

EIC - European Innovation Council
The EIC aims to identify and support breakthrough technologies and game changing
innovations to create new markets and scale up internationally
It supports all stages of innovation from R&D on the scientific underpinnings of
breakthrough technologies, to validation and demonstration of breakthrough
technologies and innovations to meet real world needs, to the development and
scaling up of start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Open Funding & Strategic Funding:
Open Funding is designed to enable support for any technologies and innovations that cut across different scientific, technological,
sectoral and application fields or represent novel combinations.
Strategic Funding :The challenge driven approach is presented in Section III (‘EIC Strategic Challenges’) and provides funding to
address specific technological and innovation breakthroughs.

EIC Pathfinder
Consortia of at least 3 different independent legal entities (e.g. research organisations, universities, SMEs, industry)
established in at least 3 different eligible countries. Single applicants or small consortia (two partners) may be able
to apply
achieve the proof of principle and validate the scientific basis of breakthrough technology (TRL 1-4)
proof of principle that the main ideas of the envisioned future technology are feasible, thus validating its scientific and
technological basis.
take the necessary measures to allow future uptake to take place, for instance through an adequate formal
protection of the generated Intellectual Property (IP)
Grants of up to EUR 3 million (open) or EUR 4 million (challenge driven)
Funding rate: 100%
Deadline 19 May 2021
| 1430.03.2021
EIC - Transition
Single applicants (SMEs, spin-offs, start-ups, research organisations, universities) or small consortia 2 - 5 partners, not
necessarily SME).
Applications must build on results from eligible Pathfinder, FET or ERC Proof of Concept projects
innovation activities that go beyond the experimental proof of principle in laboratory.
It supports both the maturation and validation of your novel technology as well as the development of a business case
and business model towards the innovation’s future commercialisation (up to TRL 5 to 6).
Grants of up to EUR 2.5 million (or more if properly justified) to validate and demonstrate technology in application
relevant environment (TRL 4 to 5/6) and develop market readiness
Deadline 22 September 2021
| 1530.03.2021
EIC – Accelerator(former SME Instrument)
Single Start-ups and SMEs (including spin-offs), individuals (intending to launch a start-up/ SME) and in exceptional cases
small mid-caps (fewer than 500 employees)
to scale up high impact innovations with the potential to create new markets or disrupt existing ones.
focuses in particular on innovations building on scientific discovery or technological breakthroughs (‘deep tech’) and
where significant funding is needed over a long timeframe before returns can be generated (‘patient capital’). Funding
and support from the EIC Accelerator is designed to enable such innovators to attract the full investment amounts
needed for scale up in a shorter timeframe.
Blended finance: up to EUR 2.5 million grant component for technology development and validation (TRL 5/6 to 8),
Funding rate 70%; EUR 0.5 - 15 million investment component for scaling up and the related activities (TRL 8-9)
Application: possible any time (short applications: 5 pages, 10 slides pitch, video pitch – rejected twice, 12 months
blocked for resubmission) Full applications by 9 June 2021 and 6 October 2021
